      Dear all

antiX, like many Linux distros is free, “free” in the sense that is costs nothing, but also “free” in the sense that you can do what you want with it.

But antiX is not just a piece of software- it’s a community! A “free” community also in both senses. But do you know where your freedom ends? When it impacts someone else’s freedom. You can be pretentious, even bitch and complain a lot. It’s ok, you’r free to do that. You want to to seem really smart and start talking about stuff you don’t really understand? You’r free to do that too (that happened unwilling to me several times, not because I wanted to “sound smart”, but because I failed to understand that I lacked the technical know-how to really help with a particular situation, or simply missunderstood the question).
But what you are not free to do is offend other people here, even if indirectly- not being rude is not an exclusive of the forum guidelines- it should be part of our way of life.

You may disagree with some opinions – I strongly disagree with many of anticapitalista’s opinions and choices, but I respect them and I respect him; I sometimes think that some long time forum users should try to take it easier with newbies, but I respect them…

Every single person that wastes time from his/her’s personal life to create antiX, create the software tools antix uses or works for free in the forum, working almost like this is a call center (that provides better costumer service that probably most commercial services), deserves our respect.

        Hi,
I am kinda new to this forum. I contribute sometimes because I use antiX a lot and thought I give back in some manners. I have also noticed that some members are a little bit tough on other members. One time, I saw that a member use the term “freaking stupid” and I thought maybe I don’t want to be a part of this show. Then I backed off some looking at the forum for a while but I came back just observing. One time, I wanted to suggest looking at an alternative for Dillo because it has not been updated for a while. There was also a problem with the expiring certificate. I suggested maybe looking at Netsurf. I seem to use it a lot. It certainly has problems on its own. It was just a suggestion. Somebody replied, “garbage.” I told my wife, I think I am going to stop watching this forum. I thougth I was trying to be helpful by creating a discussion. But apparently it was not received as helpful by that response.

What I am saying is that some people may feel intimidated from contributing.
        Thanks.

Thanks PPC, we all have bad days and good ones but in general this is the best forum I have ever been a member of.

You wrote: I strongly disagree with many of anticapitalista’s opinions and choices.

Watching how capitalism and so called governments have succesfully (lined there pockets with millions) responded during
the last months I am becoming more and more in agreement with much anti says. The world needs a big change.

@calciumsodium – Yes, I do understand what you are saying- when developing a script (that’s now part of antiX) both me personally and my efforts were directly insulted by a user. Stuff like that happens very now and then, even here in this forum.
I would suggest also other alternative browsers to dillo- but if I undestand correctly dillo is included in antiX because it works in very old CPU’s that don’t any other GUI browser that allows to view the HTLM help files included in antiX (And there’s no way to read pdf files with pictures, in the terminal)
Don’t get discouraged- I sometimes stayed away from the forum just because it can be too distracty from my “real” life…
Also- we have to take a step back and try to not take stuff personally: “freaking stupid” applied to someone is offensive, but, on the other hand, saying something is “garbage” can be just a valid ( but rude) point of view

@Moddit- hum- I don’t disagree with anti’s political point of view- I tend to me apolitical (but generally identify more with positions to the left), I disagree with how democracies tend to work in the world. The very term “Party” (in the sense of “Political party”) is something that does not make much sense to me. That becomes even more apparent in the portuguese word for it “Partido” means “broken”
I disagree with, for example, the fact that anti includes political links in the default browser – mainly because it may tend to scare some kinds of users (An American youtuber did a very good review on antiX then did an addendum, because someone told him about those links, and almost burned antiX at the stake. A commenter on that YouTube’s post even said that our currently default wallpaper was probably an inverted cross- that made me laugh, until I realized the guy was serious…)
Other than that I would change some of antiX’s defaults and one or other app- just because it would make antiX generally more usable and would help it gain mommentum and more users- I don’t want to see antiX became a light Ubuntu, but I do understand that folks are left scratching their heads when, for example, they don’t find an obvious way to add desktop icons- damn- there’s a way to add icons to icewm’s toolbar right there in the menu and many people (even youtube “reviewers” don’t know about it). I would put TIM on icewm’s by default, just because the average users expects options to configure a bar to be available on that bar… Tiny things like that.
Fortunatly, we can configure antiX do look and act anyway that we want. Do I think that the way I use my antiX should be standard? Hum… not really- it would be nice to have a version that was friendlier to Windows users, without any extra use of resources, like my antiX- but I only cared enough to make a transformation pack, not a full blown ISO that anyone could install…

Well. I always approached this attitude that I am just along for the ride in Anti’s vehicle.

I was not aware you were being personally insulted lately PPC. My bad since I had both eyes worked on and wore eyepatches for a few weeks.
So excuse my absence. I only let Anti know I was going to be out of action for a bit.
I would have shut down those insult posts.
Since there are 2 sides to every story.
What might insult you might not insult me. So being admin here.

I might not make everyone happy.

I am pleased that I was able to initiate such a discussion. And I mean this in a constructive sense 🙂

Freedom, respect, tolerance … much used terms … unfortunately also a lot of misused terms.

Love? Ok, but that goes into the religious, so into the private.

I have given my opinion and I hope my opinion can stay there. Anything else would be unfree, disrespectful and intolerant. My methods aren’t always conventional, but they work quite well 🙂

@roky – glad you got your eyesight back!

And no, I was not insulted, but, if you take a look at recent posts here in the forum, you’ll probably realize what sent me on this small rant… We can’t afford to lose important members of our community because of “bad ambient” here in the forum!

                    @calciumsodium

                    Good statement.

It is a shame when users leave a good product because they are treated badly! Especially if it is a free product. But unfortunately I have this experience in many Linux forums. So it’s not an antiX specific problem. Linux is good and Linus (the inventor) is a good person. But if something is free and also open, then this also attracts people who take advantage of the situation to stage themselves and to use or even hurt others. This is not an antiX problem either, nor is it a Linux problem, but a general problem in a world in which people have replaced belief in “the good” with belief in themselves.

Somehow I had hoped that anticapitalista would be a woman 🙂 Because it takes women who create good products, also with Linux and everywhere!

I help people with old computers so that they can keep working for a while. These users are not stupid or ideological, just too poor to buy a new computer. Of course, I have to be sure that a Linux distribution works well, that there is good documentation and that you can get good help in the forum. Otherwise I cannot recommend or even install a distribution with a clear conscience. So I’m testing the product, the wiki and the forum well.

                        My dear JSM,
there are some things you should bear in mind when testing and discussing antiX.

1.) This project is not backed up by unlimited manpower like an organisation of the size of e.g. microsoft or canonical. But you will find here a team of highly engaged people doing their very best to help other people out volunteerly in their spare time. Moreover you will find behind scenes a team of highly skilled people creating and maintaining functionality like all the live persistent etc. stuff, which I did never happen to see in such a foxy, sophisticated way. Moreover they care for support of machines other distros won’t even consider to be worth their while to let them even live in their code.
Comparing all this to the manpower and means the result is simply great.

2.) Many parts of what antiX is constructed of are adopted from other projects (a very common process in linux world, as you probably know). So developers here don’t have influence on some decisions these ancestors make. Without manpower to re-code it in a special version for antiX it’ll simply stay as it is. Due to some design decisions of the “ancestors” in newer versions of their code antiX needs to stick to older versions of some programs, allowing to get executed on older hardware still. So you might miss some functionality you find in other distros. But this is the price of keeping usage of ressources at a low level. If you can’t live with it, this is probably not the right distro for your needs. But you should know: many of the heavyly ressource-wasting functionality can be invisibly replaced by more efficiently working engines at backend, so user won’t notice much difference on screen. This is what describes “lean and mean”. Sometimes a simple script is enough to replace main functionality of a heavy weighted software bundle only executable on brand new fast multicore systems.

3.) The bord is — as PPC has described impressively in his opening posting — a place to come together and learn from each other freely. And I sign his words about the borders of personal freedom. Here in this place people differently skilled share their time and knowledge to help other users out. Again, all of us do this volunteerly, and quite regularily it happens the person answering had to investigate the stuff before being able to give some hints in prospect to resolve the problem a user has. This is not a professional service hotline who owes you customer support. Even if we do make mistakes and are far off from providing perfect (or in some cases even functioning) solutions, you should compare the results to what professional driven hotlines nowadays provide. In this place you will not get a soft voice reading you out some readymade set pieces from a database. All this is handmade. And you will see: People won’t stop until your problem gets solved if you ask kindly and in an non insulting way even once having received a not useful (or even wrong) answer. As said before: we are all learning from each other here, this is the spirit of a community. And Linux _IS_ community. In case an interrogator realises an proposed solution to be wrong or has more knowledge about it already, he should freely express this by describing what he feels of being needed to correct, and why, explaining what leads him to the contrary opinion. This gives a base to discuss the problem target oriented to finally solve it. This is more as what you can expect from most existing professional help desks.

And now look at the way you’ve reacted yourself:

Well, as all of you can see, the answeres from the 2 people where just not helpfull.

So what? As you might have got from my scraggy attempts of explanation you will have to live with it. WE ARE NOT PERFECT.

And this is not the frist time! I am very good in testing…linux, browsers, swap methods…and also people.

Again, accept it or leave it. And being that skilled you should rather consider to back up our manpower than wasting time with meaningless chiack. Remember the spirit of community. Moreover, you might even simply file a bug, when finding it while testing. And you could — as I did myself — go on, taking the bull by the horns and starting to mend out critical errors found in some existing scripts.

It is very strange, that 2 people are not even able to give answers to a simple zram script, that everyone can understand, that has just basic skills. But as I told you, I am very good in testing, also people.

This is fine. If you consider the script in question as understandable to everyone, this means, you do understand it already. How come than you had to ask how to deal with some problems of using it? I presume, you did already know the solution, at least how to find it.

And please stop giving users missleading answers! With this you are waisting the time of the useres and also harm the antiX project!

As outlined above: even misleading answers are part of the process of finding a solution. Again: WE ARE NOT PERFECT. And even within a circle of highly skilled engineers you will see erroneous and misleading opinions, this is simply human. What makes all the difference: The way you react to this fact. They are trained to discuss all this in a professional way and this way sort out any kind of errors in the end.

And yes, I am a ingeneer for informatic (not computer since)

Fine again. This is best basis to step in and help other people out. Think of the spirit of Community. Again and again: Using Linux _IS_ community.

I am near 53 years old and I am not a stupid

Nobody said so (I do hope at least…)

anyway I can ask like a stupid in order to show up the people, that like to play around with stupid. Do you got the point? I hope so.

Well, here we have the very „true core of this poodle” (freely translated from J.W.v Goethe, just remember what this expression commonly stands for in German language, I’m sure you’ll understand. For all non German reading people: it translates correctly to „the gist of the matter“)

Please, DON’T WASTE OUR TIME BY SIMULATING YOU’D BE IN NEED OF HELP if this is not true. Nobody here is “playing around with stupid“. Don’t mix this up with some attempts to brighten up boring technical conversation by interspersing some jokes, or people playing on words. Take always into account these might not get understood in other languages, and thus be aware also you yourself might not have got the true intention of an seemingly insulting response from somebody trying to help you out. We have often seen the meaning get lost in translation. Understanding fun and humor in a foreign language is something you need to be skilled to an utmost high level in reading this language and knowing its culture to get its sense right. This is one of the most difficult tasks you can manage in a foreign language. Online translated texts commonly fail to transport the true sense, just like people not _very_ familiar with the foreign language in question.

Now, you may decide: Would you like to join and help other people out, best you can? Or would you rather stay where you are, trying to provoke volunteerly helping people? In the latter case, simply leave us. But in the first case you are welcome, even after all. Everybody should get entitled of a second chance, if he has understood finally how things are run…

                        Robin

But I can not more finde the post and JSM seems to be banned. I found the post about how to swap correctly very helpfull an have already done the first step of his advises. It is sad that heplpfull posts and users are not more here! In the forum I couldn’t find any good information about choosing the right way for swap and swapiness.

Sorry, but this forum is not working well. It is posting another link. Should be this link:

                                … forums/topic/zram-defaults-not-found/

And I can see know, what was going on! Some users here seems to have a problem with people that know a bit more and don’t belive every nonsens. Maybe I will find JSM in the Devuan forum. And maybe I will find there a better solution.

                                Wow!

Really sad, that you can not handle the fact, that you are not the only one that has good skills!

Time for you to move on.

Did you actually read what he posted in that zram thread? It was Melodie that started the thread back in October, 2019 and posted Solved.
JSM added nothing to that post except to piss people off.

Added: what a surprise (not) that the links you give in your post above are the same as what JSM links to in this post.

BTW – In that thread, your hero JSM offered nothing concrete to his problem and certainly no solution.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.
