I was having a hard time with flash drives, because they did automount, and then I couldn’t get into them, because there were locks on them. I don’t know how to change the permissions with right clicking on properties.
Then, I connected a second hard drive and it wouldn’t mount.

::Hi vegan,
please do a forum search on mount, automounting, there are many questions and answers hidden in the depths
as well as very recent posts..January 12, 2023 at 11:21 am #97248Membervegan
::Hello Zunzi_23. OK, I did that. Thanks! Well, I hope I can qualify for a bit of hands on help, but I can understand if I’m supposed to continue doing my own research. It seems like a good distro and after several hours of playing around with it, I could do everything I wanted or needed, except for mounting drives.
I just entered the search term ‘error mounting flash drive’ and there were no search results.
I disabled the automount and then logged out and logged back in. I inserted a flash drive into the port and I tried several file managers, but it didn’t show up. It showed up in the Gnome-disk-utility and when I tried to mount it, there was an error message.
Not authorized to perform operation udisks error quark 3
Am I supposed to be locked out of changing file permissions on multiple flash drives? It seems like this is some sort of bug.

::Hi vegan,
please tell us which file system you are using. FAT 32 is pretty much universal for data
transfer.Others are somewhat more tricky.
Maybe also good to know which version of antiX and which kernel you are using.
Reason is should NTFS be involved the driver module is not integrated in older kernel. Not authorized to perform operation udisks error quark 3.
A search showed that has been around a long time. Buntu forum suggests using FAT 32.I do that without thinking about it, have done so for years.
You can also use Linux filesystems like ext4 but you will need to either work as root or
change ownership to open and use devices or data stored on them.January 12, 2023 at 3:24 pm #97264Membervegan
::So, I checked on my other computer and the file system on the flash drive is FAT 32. The version of AntiX and the kernel is the one I downloaded and installed two days ago.

::To manually mount a USB device
Create the mount point:
sudo mkdir -p /media/usb
Assuming that the USB drive uses the /dev/sdb1 device you can mount it to /media/usb directory by typing:
sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /media/usbHad to learn the hard way back we used slitaz auto mount and sometimes would work. Sometimes not.
Good command for finding usb drive namessudo parted -l
or
mount
By itself. To unmount command line style
umountSo that last command I showed to mount. Use it but sub umount to unmount it. Only if the antiX unmount usb drives does not work though.
I would try that 1st. Was a md5sum check done on your downloaded antiX iso. You might have a corrupted download. Leading to a corrupt install.Good luck.

How to Search for AntiX solutions to your problemsJanuary 12, 2023 at 9:49 pm #97288ModeratorBobC
::To me, zzzfm is much better for mounting USB if you turned automount off, because Rox-filer won’t open a window for it if you didn’t mount it.
But with zzzfm you need to turn Show Devices on or you won’t see them. If you left click the volume, it should mount.

::Thank you guys, for your help! How do I mark it solved? I thought I would work on MX Linux, which I think is by the same group, and then return here and try to figure out these instructions. I’m still a newbie.

::I will mark it solved for you, but feel bad because it doesn’t sound like it was a success.
My opinion is that the primary cause was turning automount off. Maybe you had a good reason to do that, but the default is set to on so that when you plug in a flash drive, it gets mounted and the a window with its contents open in Rox-filer.
But I suppose its a matter of personal preference, and if antiX is too tricky for you, we understand. Don’t fool yourself though, as you will probably need to learn new things and make adjustments to make any kind of switch.
BTW, you haven’t said, but if you are a Windows person, you might consider starting over from a the flashdrive and installing FT10, which would transform antiX into a more windows like environment and switch you over to zzzfm (a different file manager) instead of Rox-filer as part of that process. If you want to know how to install it, its pretty quick and easy, and we can point you to the instructions. When I setup machines for people used to Windows, that is how I do it, and they seem to adapt without many troubles.

::Hi Bob, I turned automount off, because I watched the video from run with the Dolphin and that was what he suggested.
No, I’m not coming from Windows. I’ve been using Linux for 15 years. I’ve just never progressed. There has always been basic distros and super hard distros and nothing in between. Gentoo, LFS, Arch. MX Linux looks like a good distro for the advanced beginner. I estimate that coming from Linux Mint, to read the FAQs and the instruction manual and get used to MX Linux will take about 3 months.
The crazy part is I was testing AntiX all day, until I started trying to connect another HD and a flash drive and I seemed to get everything working with no trouble, well except for the install wizard. It wouldn’t just work automatically. I had to manually partition it.
January 13, 2023 at 10:31 am #97324ModeratorBobC
::Yes, manual partitioning is more difficult because there are lots of choices and restrictions, and if you are new, you don’t know what it should look like. You might need to set it up UEFI, or maybe not, depending on the machine. If you want help with that, you need to provide the details of the machine including the inxi output, as well as any specific requirements for how you want to set it up. I wonder why you couldn’t do it automatically? I have never used that myself, but would think it should work.
If you want help to try again with it, post the brand and model of the machine, if anything is modified, the inxi output, what you want, and a screenshot of what the automatic partitioning option created, and whatever error or problem you had.

::Good Morning, Bob! I’m overwhelmed by your offer to help, your kindness and your willingness to give generously of your time. Usually, moderators are meant to punish people. I went on your profile to send you a private message, rather than continuing to post on this thread, but I guess the system doesn’t have that functionality.
I clicked on my profile, and I favorited this topic, but I can’t figure out how I would find it, again, in the future. Could you give me some help with that?
Would you mind if I study MX Linux for a few months, by reading the user manual and FAQs and see if I can make some progress, then returning and taking advantage of your generous offer at a later date? It would be hard for me to make sense of the instructions you are providing, otherwise. At that time, do I just post more public threads?
January 13, 2023 at 4:01 pm #97339ModeratorBobC
::Sorry, private messages are turned off.
Anyway, if its in a thread other people can find and use the same solution, so if people invest the time to search, hopefully they can find the answer themselves.
You could bookmark this page?
If you get it partitioned for MX, you could probably load antiX to the same partition as MX…
