The following is how I got mps-youtube to work on my system. I hope this would be useful to other users of this program. I don’t know if this will work in other systems, but I just thought I share and also learn how others have tried to make mps-youtube work on their systems.

      1. First, I followed the suggestions in the post

      https://antixlinux.com/mps-youtube-bug-and-fix/

      to set the api key.

      2. Then I set player to vlc. I have already installed vlc. And I make sure mps-youtube works.
Mpv does not work well with mps-youtube for me. Celluloid works well, but does not automatically advance to the next song for me. I have to manually close out the celluloid window of the current song in order for celluloid to advance to the next song.
Vlc works best for me because it can automatically advance to the next song in my selection.
For example, I can pick songs 1,3,7 to play songs 1, 3, and 7 in my search list and vlc will automatically play through all of them sequentially.
For example, if I pick 1-10, vlc will play from all the 1-10 songs on that list.

      3. This is the most important step. In RoxFiler, or whatever file manager you use,
I right click on the file:
      ~/.config/mps-youtube/config
      and click on properties.
I uncheck the Permissions Write for Owner to make this box blank.
This is to make sure that this config file is read only.

I think this has solved the problem of the “breaking of mps-youtube” for me so far.

Before I did step three, mps-youtube would “break” for me every two days. I would have to do steps 1 and 2 again.
As I got smarter about this, I make a copy of the ~/.config/mps-youtube folder (of a working mps-youtube) as a backup in order to quickly reestablish mps-youtube again after a break.

Why bother with this when we now have ytfzf?
Well, mps-youtube does not show the video portion of the youtube video songs, so it uses a lot less in resources.

Is there a better way to solve this mps-youtube “break” problem? I would be glad learn more from other users of mps-youtube.
      Thanks

If you install the “inotify-tools” package, and run:
        inotifywait -m ~/.config/mps-youtube
its output will be helpful toward discovering WHEN the overwrites are occurring. (every time the mps-youtube launches? or, are the write operations actually being emitted by another process, e.g. “youtube-dl”?) Knowing that detail is probably important for determining “a better way to solve”.

Mpv does not work well with mps-youtube for me.

That is one of the reasons why anticapitalista considers it to be broken (mps-youtube is meant to use MPV, that is why it is listed as a hard dependency).

The moment that ytfzf or some other youtube player can play and save/create playlists, mpsyt is bye bye for me.
