The extension doesn’t need to be .ovpn

I don’t know what kind of errors you are getting but there’s probably two fixes that work.

      1. In your terminal, FIRST navigate to the directory of your mullvad configuration files, then run:
      sudo openvpn mullvad-config-file.conf

      2. OR execute the command from any directory, but specify the config, certification, and password files:
      sudo openvpn --config /file/path/mullvad-config-file.conf --auth-user-pass /file/path/mullvad-userpass.txt --ca /file/path/mullvad_ca.crt
Mullvad suggests that you copy the files you need to “/etc/openvpn/” (not sure if this makes a difference, I keep my config files a folder I created myself:”~/.config/openvpn/” This is to avoid needing root access)

You can also use Wireguard instead of OpenVPN. Wireguard is available in the Synaptic Package Manager, although I haven’t tested this myself and don’t know if it works, but I imagine it’s roughly the same process
