I have installed antiX-bullseye-b1-runit_x64-full in mid September (following the advice from Fungal) and am very pleased and impressed with its performance. I’m now well aware of the drag that systemd impresses upon all those OS that use it.

That installation was on an HP-Mini which was crawling with Lubuntu. A few days later I took the plunge and installed antiX in my main laptop, a Dell XPS 9350. Sure enough, the results were even more notorious and I’ll never go back to any OS that support the burden of systemd.

I have been using Openbox for years, slowly improving and customizing the interface to suit my requirements. So in both computers I installed Openbox and discarded all other WMs. I kept only IceWM for a “just in case” occasion which, so far, has not happened.

Basically, my Openbox is configured to replace a DE. From LXDE I kept its panel, lxktask and lxterminal. These I have used for years and have yet to find a replacement which will fill my needs as well as these three do. Particularly, the Panel has three main items: the Desktop Pager, the Task Bar and the System Tray. I especially like the Pager that allows me to DnD apps from one desk to any other and the fact that it also shows apps icons.

The original Menu is not used and is replaced with the OB Root Menu created with Obmenu-Generator. I rely heavily on Keybindings to run my favorite programs using a veritable alphabet to do so. All my apps are run with Super + <letter> (e.g. Super + f runs Firefox, Super + g runs Geany, and so on). Alt + <key> controls window managing (moving, resizing, etc.) and Super + <key> controls window tiling and cascading (using winfuncs).

My right-click Root Menu also includes specific antiX apps. This only required copying some .desktop files from /usr/share/applications/antix to /usr/share/applications.

All in all a hihghly customized and very fast environment, well up to my liking. However, the most important feature is that everything works as expected, fast and flawlessly. antiX became my favorite distro as expected. Using it is a pleasure and provides everything I need and then some.

Should anyone be interested in testing/using my layout, I’d gladly supply the necessary files and info.

Finally, if this post belongs to a different section, please move it accordingly. Thanks for reading the rather extensive description. Keep the good work with antiX! Cheers!

        Nice!

For a while, I was using tint2 panel with fluxbox, in a setup looking somewhat like yours.
(Though nowadays, I use herbstluftwm.) 😉
