I had a nice post before but upon loading several screen captures in my previous post (how many can I post?) got booted as spam! I’ll be curt.
1. Cd-dvd not reading, mounting.Reading music nor pictures. (I already checked quite a bit on these forums for this issue and nothing clear nor specific about my problem.) Solved! (I did actually find something on the forums:
$ sudo mkdir /media/sr0, I tried it, and it worked. So I did the same for the 2nd dvd/burner drive. ) 2. Cannot play streaming music: StreamTuner2,MPS, Poorman etc. 3. I downloaded packets thru installer and manager in control center eg. SuperTuxKart and cannot find them or make them run. Does not appear in menu. (how can I see a list of my installed packages or manage them?) Is there an auto update manager I can run or how? 4. How to find a Weather conky or display on desktop. 5. Making desktop icons for favorite apps.(solved, I found this out alone, sorry) That is it for now. Thanks comrades!$ inxi -zv7

::Use xmms app to listen to cd music (do not mount the cd).
You will have to configure it. (Options > Preferences > Highlight CD Audio Player then Configure and make sure Directory /media/sr0 (whatever mount/point you have under /media) is used. Save settings. Then Drop down menu – Play Directory and navigate to /media/sr0BTW – You should have installed the latest release 19.2 then you wouldn’t have had issues with 1 and probably 2.
For 2 – you will need to do a dist-upgrade.

::HI guys, I’ve listed my specs to get help completing my install and getting this system functioning. I have listed the issues I’m having with hardware and software since my install. I’ve numbered my priorities:
1. Cd, dvd, not mounting or finding file. (I would like to include a screen shot of the error message, but I don’t know how on here)
2. Problems streaming music: StreamTuner2, or Poormanradio. (I also downloaded some apps thru package installer and manager and cannot find them) eg. SuperTuxCart not listed in my apps menu.
3. Not able to read cd pictures nor music. (See 1)
4. MPS youtube not working. (API issue; I checked some of this out and seems a little complicated with google and registering.) SMTube works; however to play videos or music I have to right click “read with: mpv + youtube-dl” I would like this to work by just clicking on the link.
5. Once I get most of these working how can I make them desktop short cuts? Easy for someone not used to computers : watch and manage pictures & listen to music.
6. Is there an automatic update manager?
7. What weather conky can I use on desktop?
8. Those are my main issues. The next 2 I might as well give my impressions so far.
9. Very speedy. As you can see by my specs this is a dinosaur desktop from the beginning of the new millenia. In comparing the WINXp OS to Antix OS on this machine I am amazed at how functional it has now become. Sorry for the rant, but I realize that some people and me prior to linux would stop using a computer or go and buy a new one because of the Windows bog down since it is just so long to boot and open windows and the apps and updates ahhh. So if I get all my issues resolved and I am sure I will: 3 thumbs up for Antix for old computers (which is the search term I used to find out about Antix).
10. Happy so far, works pretty well and lite for 512mb ram system. Still learning and playing around updating and configuring, Will use again on another machine.
Thank you.As anticapitalista has stated, first
sudo apt dist-upgrade2. Problems streaming music: StreamTuner2, or Poormanradio. (I also downloaded some apps thru package installer and manager and cannot find them) eg. SuperTuxCart not listed in my apps menu.
After dist-upgrading, see if you can install SuperTuxKart again from antiX package manager.
locate supertuxkart5. Once I get most of these working how can I make them desktop short cuts? Easy for someone not used to computers : watch and manage pictures & listen to music.
You can create .desktop files (there are different post in the forum), save them in ~/Desktop and (if using ROX desktop), drag them to the desktop from the folder.6. Is there an automatic update manager?
Yes, Apt Notifier. You can install it (if not installed) from the antiX package Installer and uncomment the option in the ~/.desktop-session/startup file7. What weather conky can I use on desktop?
https://www.antixforum.com/forums/search/conky+weather/
There are many solutions. You can choose the one you like the most.
One I liked was:antiX19 and new weather conky with 9 days and 12 hours preview of TBG “WUnderground conky script”

::Hey guys,Anti, Xe, thanks for taking the time! I’ve been using Droopy to transfer the pics to upload here so very pleased with that!
Ok, I had already done the updates and there were none available, so I should be current.
1. still not working, I must have done something wrong there seems to be files missing. See the screen capture please. For drive 2 I tried the same thing but used the dev codes I found cdrw, dvdrw and got another error message.
Use xmms app to listen to cd music (do not mount the cd).
You will have to configure it. (Options > Preferences > Highlight CD Audio Player then Configure and make sure Directory /media/sr0 (whatever mount/point you have under /media) is used. ::Xe, thank you for the help, I will concentrate on getting the cd and dvd to work. (Still not working, is there something I should send that you guys can tell what my problem is? I think there are missing files or dir.)
I truly am grateful for people like you!
Found what ROX was and dragged the icons out of it . I located TUX Kart in a usr/ dir but seems to be Tux.png images. I’ll re-install if I have too.- This reply was modified 3 years ago by anti1alain.

::Lecteur 1
Periferique : /dev/sr0/
Repertoire: /media/sr0Change the Repertoire option to where it should be mounted in to the directory you already created /media/sr0
That should work for The first disc.
You could also sudo mkdir /media/sr1 and mount the other DVD there if you do have more than one CD/DVD reader.Edit:
I just tested it out, and I was able to play my old Gregorian Music CD. It has been ages since I have used CDs.
I simply chose “play directory” (Shift + L) and selected /media/sr0 and it worked.- This reply was modified 3 years ago by Xecure.

::For adding launchers to the desktop:
I will assume you are using the default desktop (IceWM + ROX).
…
As far as I know, you cannot drop “apps” from the menu, but you can add .desktop files (equivalent to “quick links” for “apps”). Most of the apps installed will have their .desktop “links” in /usr/share/applications, but an easy way to get there should be as illustrated by the next screenshot:

::Hey XE thank you for sticking with me today. I would like to solve this. Get my cd/dvd working and I’ll be cooking with gas. Coincidence with your choice of music that’s pretty funny. Or you are really good and know who I am. My name is Gregory….
I tried your solution above and included the screen capture. dev/sr0 not a file.
It is when I used your shift+L trick that I noticed the tree. Is my /media/sr0 file supposed to be under dev/? Or it is fine where it is? Still not working.
WHat about if I insert a dvd what will happen then? Which player will open? I would need them to start right up when inserted and figure which player to open automatically, or be able to assign it like we’re trying to do. Will I also have to do this with the video player or does XMMS play videos too?
Is there something you can look at that I can send so you see what is up with this?
3 days and counting on this install, it’s getting a little long. Just because I feel that I screwed this up.
PS. I properly downloaded the iso and burned it. I then played dvd and started up live in the demo. Working pretty fine. I tried to use the included installer over the whole hard disk on a WINXP system and properly followed the instructions. At the most crucial moments of partitioning and checking the boxes to ensure a proper install and putting the right boot and root in the right spots however is about 5 seconds compared to the rest of the video showing off the utilities once installed. I had to rewind over 5 times at that spot to try and see exactly how he did it. Anyway it would not install to the hard drive. Figured WINXP was screwing the install due to EIFI or BIOS or whatever I read. SO I DBAN the entire disk start from scratch, Antix had already overwrote the old XP OS. Retried other installs and finally it worked when I was told to use the grub repair and I figured to place the right boot and root, swap and home in the right partitions. Now we are here. Simple, insert CD/DVD it should play.Love it or leave it

::Hi all, me too on autoplay. Have despite trying many suggestions not been able to get DVD to Autoplay. Tried with VLC, Clementine as well as some other players. Normal play working fine. If an answer turns up will be grateful.
To locate where applications are installed the easiest is to use synaptic, 4 th tab lists installed files and binarys as well as location.
Only caveat is some self contained applications installed without apt usage will not be shown.3 days and counting on this install, it’s getting a little long, many months ago I felt same, for me it has been worth it, I have never used a more stable, fast running distro. Now I do new installs from a fully customized stick
which makes that job far less tiring. Please each time you make progress make a new iso as a backup. It can save hours of grief and repeated work.

::Maybe this will help for setting up XMMS to autolaunch when introducing a Music CD:
https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/playing-music-cds/#post-21144About /dev/ and /media/ thing, let’s say the /dev/ tells you about the connected devices, and the /media/ is where you want the devices to mount. the /dev/ values will normally not be changed by the user, but you CAN set a mouunting point for any device in /media/
You can check all devices connected in a list in the Mount Connected Devices in Control Centre > Disks, where you can also manually mount them.- This reply was modified 3 years ago by Xecure.

::Good morning Dave, thank you. I think the / was the problem. Sr0 plays music and videos. Yeaaa!
I also tried a dvd video in my first cd tray (sr0) and managed to open the video through an app called Celluloid. That seems to work. I did have to open and type /media/sr0 in the Celluloid or use the file manager function but it works. Thank you. I will have to find another MV player that is more user friendly. This set up is for a friend that will not be able to type and search thru the file manager. There must be another option. XMMS will do for the audio. I think it is pretty easy and does set up the info automatically. We’re half way there.sr1 (cdrw/dvdrw) is a different story. I did the same switch without the / for sr1. I could see the time move on the player and it appeared to be playing but no sound? I screwed around with this quite a bit trying to get sound and the player froze a few times and had to reboot and cold start. I managed to get it going again: the time is running and I can change tracks, but still no sound.
Just a little bit more…uuuugh. Heave ho, heave ho, heave ho! Gonna make it I think.
So I screwed around again until I froze the player up when doing a verification. One time I received an error message there was no disk, then I opened the physical tray and closed it. Retried verification and it just freezes. I am getting a feeling that I would have to reinitalize the cdrw somehow. It’s making old man noises when spinning and seems to be taking a long time to read the disks.
I managed to get sr0 running, so I mean I’m not that far. Now its the read/write cd/dvd that is not working correctly.
