::Thanks Anti, still not working.
I also tried a dvd in sr1 and opening with Celluloide. This is what I received.
I then retried music cd in sr1 slot changed the directory and then pressed play and it froze.I think I can live and figure out the rest of my issues in time, but not having the 2nd cd drive function properly is not ok. I mean I used this cd slot to boot and load up Antix so it was working previously.
Just tried smplayer as well and when I try and open an audio cd I get an error message.

::OK so after closing, opening, fiddling with the settings like you said. Also after doing apt-get updates and update distro in the terminal, and then auto removing a bunch of other files that I was told to do after the updates and bam! Music to my ears on XMMS sr1…
Seriously, did you guys press a button?
Ok so far so good.
I’ll be back.

::On a 512 mb machine, you are better off not dedicating 40 mb (last time I tried it a few weeks ago) of it to run apt-notifier all the time. Checking for updates once a day might be a more reasonable solution. You can search here for recent threads on how different people are handling it. You might also try a lower resource browser like Palemoon if Firefox is causing trouble. That’s what was happening on my old P III and P II machines.
It’s amazing how well the old machines do when running efficient software. It wasn’t the machines that were bad, it was the software. I really would suggest upgrading the memory to 1 gb if you are going to use it all the time. That will help it a lot for $10 or $15.
PS: You could investigate/install/try a package called gsmartcontrol to see if your hard drive has issues. I haven’t tried it myself. It is a GUI front end for smartmontools.

::Nice to hear your problems are getting fixed, that is the real value of a great global community working together
and exceptional lead dev who does listen to users.Agree with BobC on memory, 512 is really tight especially if you want to use a modern browser.
To use your system effectively, install hosts ad blocking, block telemetry data reporting, crash reports,
remove hidden Firefox extensions. The G Hacks user.js and No script are a big help, as is Enterprise Policy
Generator addon. I always do my settings and install the user.js as well as setup policy offline,
Mozilla while talking privacy make it very hard to stop there lying games.
A lot of effort in to turning Firefox in to a Spy Bot, with real remote control, but with
right configuration it is still better than most for site compatibility and privacy.
Without above firefox filled my disk with crap and memory usage consistently crept higher until my computer crashed.
Palemoon is my favorite browser, uses about 100 mb less memory than firefox, no memory creep, not a remote accessible
bot. My personal settings have never been remotely “repaired” with Palemoon, they have with firefox. I do use No Script
Legacy in Palemoon, just download from the extensions home site. Only caveat with going to the moon is some modern sites
do not work with it.Plenty of posts on quieting Mozilla in Forum. Latest Version 75 and equivalent LTS update has yet more Telemetry wasting
our limited computing power.Anyone from Mozilla reading, no need for your crappy lying and deceitful policy, just stop disregarding your last
remaining users.
We know you are financed by google so you can pay 2.5 Million for your wonderful ceo, sack a lot of devs, maybe
the last outspoken ones with some honor and do not give a shit about about your 2% market share as long as it protects goog
from monopoly action suits.May 5, 2020 at 4:29 am #35646Forum Admin

::A cheap ssd would increase performance massively as well as maxing out the RAM.
BTW – Don’t expect too much on that old machine. Especially anything related to the Internet and video.
It is old you know.Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

::Hallo Anti, anti1alain
very much in agreement on SSD, if funds available. I have good experience with Patriot burst drives, cheap fast and up to now all reliable. An IDE SATA adapter is likely necessary, best results up to now have been with a bidirectional converter from CSL. Some other slightly cheaper devices failed to work at all in either direction.
The computer is not the most modern but with careful software selection, max memory and if possible ssd as well as blocking as much non productive traffic as possible should be ok for many use cases.
Not sure but a dedicated graphics card might also offer performance benefit if AGP slot available. Older Matrox MGA cards are really cheap and very reliable so well worth a trial, in my experience provide a number of advantageous effects Reduced main memory usage and improved video and graphics performance especially noticeable.May 6, 2020 at 4:32 pm #35673Memberanti1alain
::Hi guys, Bobc,Moddit, Anti, Xe thanks a lot for all your help. So the music cd’s in both drives read and play in XMMS. That is a go.
I installed SMplayer, have Celluloid as well. Less problems watching dvd on Celluloid. I got SM to play a video on sr0, but not an audio. I cannot get Sm to read video on sr1 nor audio. Anti- I already played around with the preferences, tried that. As well I know that this system is old and will have trouble with the web. But if it can play music and store pictures, minimal web browsing I will have accomplished my goal.You guys have been a real help and I truly appreciate the time you all put in. As Moddit stated it is about an open world and sharing (or some thing like that) but I am thankful.
This is a set up for a friend. I have been on Linux, pretty much just this year but I am about the age of some of you guys, but way behind in computers and your technology. I installed Mint on my personal computer and saw the differences in performance and freedom that not a Windows system offers and I am a convert. I am convinced, but if I can convince others as well and offer them the freedom of getting away from a monopolistic tech industry that is set up right now to exploit our personal privacy and build data bases on all of us I will have spread the word. As well as save people like myself money or offer them the ability to keep up at least as long as possible on their legacy systems makes me happy. It made me happy!!! I have never really know anything else than a Windows operating system. When I read some of your profiles and history of setting up Linux and Unix systems in the 80-90’s I feel like I really missed the boat, but am trying to catch up. The bottom line is computers are supposed to work for us and do what we want them to. So much of what happens now is under the hood/ covers, and I don’t like that. This will be my second linux install as I stated, and I have another personal laptop with a bit more juice (an SSD) that I am really thinking about Antixing it too. We shall see.
SO thanks again. But being for a friend I want this desktop with the actual specs to do what I told him I would be able to do for him. Check and download his pictures, listen to music, and minor internet yes probably music videos. I also have to try to make it idiot proof as well as much plug and play as possible. Unfortunately I do realize why Windows is the system of choice. Personally I can live with you guys and the forum, I really enjoy this, but for my friend….Eh..
Anyhoo thanks again, sorry I’ve been a little busy getting up and out from the Coronavirus, I am notified when I get a response so any help or suggestions are great. For this system, nothing is being bought or updated. We’ll do the best we can with this hardware. For now. I need to make sure that he is happy and can use the system for his needs. If its a little slow or he wants more internet performance I will follow your guidelines. (I know the browsers are the worst). Dillo is actually pretty neat.
I just need all the hardware, both cd drives to work. I have not even tried to Burn a disk yet on his drive so I am getting ready for that adventure. Now I need video audio from my sr0 and srl , SM player would be good I guess.
Audio XMMS check
Video Celluloid sr0 check SMPlayer sr0 check; sr1 no go
Audio SM no go either drivesSingle Core, Intel Pentium 4 , 32bits, L2 cache 512mb

::Hi again, you wrote
I would have to reinitalize the cdrw somehow. It’s making old man noises when spinning and seems to be taking a long time to read the disks.Pls now swap the cables to drives and see if you can verify drive is really ok before spending more time.
Old drives do fail quite often.
If drive OK use alsamixer gui, go through the sliders, there are a lot, because your sound may well be muted. A very common experience. I have often wondered why but guess there is a sensible reason for defaults.
