      New user here! Nice distro!!!
I need my “old familiars” to do some hacking.
Nothing to be found using the synaptic package manager.
How do I get that to happen? TIA

On synaptic hit the reload button on first use.
you probably want to install the build-essential package
          that pulls in gcc.

nothing found? happens when somebuddy has not yet performed apt update (or, within synaptic, “Reload”)

@linuxdaddy, @skidoo : Not used to using GUI distros. I did `apt-get update’ beforehand. Thanks for the input!

From a terminal you would need to run it with more authority

                sudo apt update

When I do a fresh install of antiX the first thing I do is

                  sudo apt update
                  sudo apt full-upgrade

Then, if I can’t install something from apt I check the repology website to see if it will tell me where to find the package. If it is in a “testing” repo I temporarily enable the usually disabled testing repo using the Control Centre|System|Edit Config Files.

Then run sudo apt update again. Then use apt install packagename.

Then I immediately go back to Control Centre|System|Edit Config Files and DISABLE the repo I previously enabled (for temporary use only) and then run sudo apt update again.

I learned how to do this from the fine people in this forum. No GUI needed. You could use the command line and a console editor instead of the Control Centre. But the Control Centre makes it easier to get to the correct file.

                  Welcome to antiX.
