Hi. So, I usually communicate with my music friends on a messaging app called Discord, which most of us should know what it is of course.

Anyway, I’m not sure how to install it. I would think that the DEB file would be the safe bet, but no dice apparently.
      Can anybody please help?

      Sincerely,
      Chase E.

I ran sudo apt-get update, then I ran apt-cache search discord.

I found several packages; these were the few that seemed relevant, though additional packages may get installed too:

python3-harmony – program and library for creating and managing Discord accounts
purple-discord – Discord messaging service plugin for libpurple
ruby-discordrb-webhooks – blackst0ne’s fork of webhook client for discordrb
samblaster – marks duplicates, extracts discordant/split reads

Based on that, if you run the following commands, MAYBE you will get what you want:

        sudo apt-get update
        sudo apt-get install python3-harmony purple-discord ruby-discordrb-webhooks samblaster

I’m not POSITIVE this is EXACTLY what you need, but it’s worth a try; if it DOES NOT work, then you can

        sudo apt-get remove python3-harmony purple-discord ruby-discordrb-webhooks samblaster

and all you will lose is some TIME, but you may learn one or two things about installing and removing packages. Remember that sudo apt-cache search command; it may come in handy again some day.

Could you be more specific than ‘no dice’?
What exactly have you done to install this app?

I tried installing the DEB file by right-clicking it and clicking “install with gdebi”. When I click “install package”, it just…did nothing. Not even a pop-up that says it requires authentication. Sorry for not being specific at first.

Try doing what I suggested instead. IF you have saved a particular .deb package you can install it like this:

First, open a terminal window of your choice, then change directory (cd) to the directory containing the .deb package.

Then sudo apt install ./[package.deb], replacing [package.deb] with the actual package, if you have downloaded that package yourself.

Otherwise, go back a couple of posts and install the packages I mentioned and see if these work for you.

Why don’t you just use synaptic to install it?
                That is the Debian way.

I’m not sure, but I’ll try it. Cross my fingers and hope.

Actually, your method might’ve worked as well, Mr. Masinick. Thanks.

Now, all I need to do is to figure out how to quit Discord whenever I need more RAM/CPU space. Because pressing alt-f4 doesn’t do it justice if you catch my drift.

The official Discord client is not available in Debian repos. You can download the deb from here.
In the terminal you can run
                      sudo apt-get update
then change directory to the one with Discord deb, and run
                      sudo apt-get install ./discord-0.0.15.deb
Then refresh app menu and Discord client should appear somewhere in there.

Personally I only use Discord from the browser.

Be advised that to install the .deb, it wanted to bring in 465 mb of other programs

I’m honestly well aware of that. It’s weird that way, but it works for me I guess.
