      Hi there,

I tried to install Antix net-install because my goal is to have an OS that is to be lightest and slimmest as possible. So after installing the net-install iso, I tried to follow this recommendation in order to achieve my goal:

      https://git.devuan.org/dev1fanboy/Upgrade-Install-Devuan/wikis/minimal-xorg-install

      or this:

      https://gist.github.com/perveziqbal/7bb16e7a77206b8cfba4b1e7d17c2bfb

My packages that I have installed are:

      Xserver-xorg-core,
      xserver-xorg-video-nvidia,
      xserver-xorg-input-mouse, xserver-xorg-input-kbd, xserver-xorg-input-libinput,
      x11-server-utils
      xinit and
      fluxbox.

Then after that, I typed startx but I’ve got an error message:

      xauth: file /home/MrBean/.Xauthority does not exist… etc… etc…

      xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: connection refused
      xinit: server error

Any clue or did I miss something ?

      Thx!

Maybe this will help. I seem to recall an authority problem with startx. There are other recent posts also, Maybe search for startx and authority in the search box?

          From your first link https://git.devuan.org/dev1fanboy/Upgrade-Install-Devuan/wikis/minimal-xorg-install
          you have not installed xserver-xorg-legacy
          Quote:
“Ascii may need the xserver-xorg-legacy package to manage permissions for xserver. Note that this is a setuid wrapper.
          root@devuan:~# apt-get install xserver-xorg-legacy”

I have recently had problems installing xorg and I found I needed xserver-xorg-legacy.

See the post How do you install and configure a GUI

I have now changed from Fluxbox to JWM; I like it better than Fluxbox.

I do expect JWM will need less memory than Fluxbox. Both are pretty light. DWM is even lighter, but it looked tricky to setup, so I never got there… I still like IceWM, myself, especially now that I know the keyboard shortcuts and have a way to arrange windows easily. Fluxbox can do that with wingrid. Not sure about JWM.

You have to install xserver-xorg-legacy and add to /etc/X11/Xrapper.config this line:

              needs_root_rights=yes

              See this post.

                Hi,

It doesen’t help and I don’t think it will change anything (?) I’m not sure about it…

Anyway, I finally manage to get rid of the message “Xauth: file /home/MrBean/.Xauthority does not exist… by following this tips:

                https://askubuntu.com/questions/165921/error-on-boot-12-04/166115#166115

But I’m still unable to login with a WM (fluxbox)… The message “xinit: giving up
xinit: unable to connect to X server: connection refused
                xinit: server error” remain there…

Ok problem solved by installing the fbdev driver (xserver-xorg-video-fbdev)… thanks to this site:

                  https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/128860/minimal-x-org-xserver-installation-on-debian-wheezy?utm_medium=organic&utm_source=google_rich_qa&utm_campaign=google_rich_qa

I don’t know why it need it so far…

But I had a new issue… once I get log it in, the display color was a big mess with the screen color tearing similar to this:

                  https://appleinsider.com/articles/16/12/02/reported-2016-macbook-pro-graphics-issues-likely-caused-by-third-party-software

So I was looking for the “nvidia settings” then I had to install the kernel-dkms… Finally, after a reboot system, it looks better but in the end, I think the whole process isn’t as thin as I wanted.

I like the idea of a minimal xorg installation. I gave it a try on a live usb. I installed the antiX-17.1-net version, updated & dist-upgraded.
I have installed only these packages for the moment:

                    xserver-xorg-core
                    xinit
                    xserver-xorg-legacy
                    icewm
                    xserver-xorg-input-synaptics (and the touchpad works)
                    xserver-xorg-input-evdev (and the keyboards works)
                    xserver-xorg-input-mouse (and the mouse works)
                    rxvt-unicode
                    palemoon-nonsse2
                    ceni
firmware-linux-free (and the wifi adapter works)

No Xauthority problems when running startx, after I’ve added the “needs_root_rights=yes” line to the Xrapper.config file.
