Hardly a new problem for me, but not the same as previous ones I have posted. A previously working PC not used while I made and fitted cpu fans.

Now I connect normally and conky shows wlan0, and wlan1 if I plug in a usb wlan adapter, and the odd characters are seen travelling up and down. But I cannot connect to any url, it hangs. Both wlan adapters exhibit the same trouble. At times I find one soft blocked which I unblock with rfkill. Then at times it warns me to clear out /run/wpa_supplicant and I find up to 3 files in there which when cleared allow connection but again cannot connect to a url.

I made no updates to this pc before the trouble started, but as I can no longer run apt-get I can do nothing. The only change I made recently was to remove wicd which I installed previously and which seemed to cause no trouble. Can wicd have left a remnant which is causing this trouble?

I attach a few hardware list files which may be relevant.

      Thanks to all in advance.

          Recreate resolvconf file

          sudo rm /etc/resolv.conf
          sudo ln -s /etc/resolvconf/run/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf

Check if resolvconf service is running
          service resolvconf status
If not running, start the service
          sudo service resolvconf start

Check if you can access the internet.

Check that /etc/network/interfaces is OK and doesn’t have duplicates, and all wlanX connections are hotplug connections.

As always Xecure comes to the rescue with my comms. problems. I have made your command list into a script which I can run if this happens again.

But it did not run like clockwork and I went round in circles with ‘soft blocked’ and ‘file wlan1 exists in wpa-supplicant’ messages, deleting the offending files and repeating your suggestions.

I have to stick with Ceni now because Connman is not yet an option, and I have a feeling that Wicd interferes in some way with Ceni and have removed it. But Wicd has certain user-friendly features that Ceni most certainly has not got.

I attach screendumps of the terminal I ran which resulted in success, maybe you will spot immediately something I did wrong.

Thanks as ever for your patience. I do understand the outline of what is going on with comms. under Linux but sadly have insufficient detail to navigate out of my problems, which to be fair are very few and far between.

I do look forward to a way out of what I feel is the only let-down I have come across in my use of antiX, maybe by some upgrade of Ceni, or even Wicd, but preferably to Connman. Am I likely to avoid these problems by investigating using wpa-supplicant from Control Centre ?

Ceni (curses /etc/network/interfaces) saves the Wireless Access Point name and password (and also the connection method) in the file /etc/network/interfaces (don’t share this file here to avoid others from seeing your wireless password).
It then tells wpa_supplicant to create a configuration for the wireless interface so that, when it is up, it can connect to the internet. Removing that wpa_supplicant configuration will only break you connection.

If you still have connman installed, check if the service is running
              service connman status
If it is running, stop it and remove it from startup

              sudo service connman stop
              sudo update-rc.d connman remove

This should stop the interface being soft-blocked on boot time (when connman service started).

Then, try restarting the networking service, to reconfigure wpa_supplicant and to start the wireless interface (if it was removed).
              sudo service networking restart

When I said to check the /etc/network/interfaces
              sudo geany /etc/network/interfaces
I meant for you to read it and don’t share it here in the forums (except if you first blur it or replace the password with XXXXXXXX).
You need to see that the wlan1 interface configuration is auto (may make the system load slowly), hot-plug (so it enables automatically when detected), or manual (requires you to enable the interface manually). The ideal is the second option (hot-plug), if it works out of the box.

What I don’t like is the error
sh: 0: getcwd() failed: No such file or directory
that comes up for resolvconf. This means there is a folder missing somewhere. See what error pops up if you run
              sudo service resolvconf restart
Also, check if this file exists
              test -f /etc/resolvconf/run/resolv.conf && echo "A: file /etc/resolvconf/run/resolv.conf exists" || echo "A: file /etc/resolvconf/run/resolv.conf doesn't exist"
if the file doesn’t exist, see if the original file exists.
              test -f /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf && echo "A: file /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf exists" || echo "A: file /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf doesn't exist"

If the second file does exist, change the symlink I wrote in my first answer

              sudo rm /etc/resolv.conf
              sudo ln -s /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf

I will be changing the antix-wifi-switch script to check for this file first ignoring the possibility of /etc/resolvconf/run symlink not existing.

When I came back to this after lunch I was unable to connect to the wlan which conky was showing with characters travelling up and down. So I ran Ceni which said I was soft blocked, I unblocked all. Tried to reconfigure wlan1 and received a long text telling me another process was probably up. There was a wlan1 file in wpa_supplicant which I removed.

Then I logged into the forum and read your response and while I have still to read it carefully and try to understand it all, I ran your suggestions in a terminal and took screenshots which I attach.

I have learned one thing, if no connection to the wlan is made it is a mistake to run Ceni manually, at it will find some components of the (failing) connection and will itself fail with the soft block and files already exist messages.

I am well aware that these are a result of interlocks built in to protect running connections, it’ s just a pity the way out of the blind alley it leads me down is so tricky to get right, and so lengthy.

I am still unsure I have this PC stable, it was stable before I paused to fit a group of cpu cooler fans. I made the mistake of installing Wicd so I could look at the available networks without re-configuring the interfaces, I have now removed it, and Connman has never been installed.

Maybe it would be easier to use network manager instead. I really cannot figure out what else to recommend.

Here a link to a topic on how to install it.
You will have to remove all wlanX entries from /etc/network/interfaces before launching it, if you end up trying this path.

I will let others recommend how to troubleshoot the current problem.

It now seems a solid fault. Running your series of commands effects a repair but it isn’t a proper answer.
Just guessing but I wonder if having briefly installed Wicd alongside Ceni has done some damage despite my having removed it? Having got a connexion this is what the interfaces file contains which I can find no fault with. Some years back I had a laptop and installed release 17 and used Ceni and Wicd indiscriminately without trouble.

                    roland@antix1:/etc/network
                    $ sudo cat interfaces
                    #——————————————————————————

                    #

                    # Used by ceni but not by connman
                    #——————————————————————————

                    auto lo
                    iface lo inet loopback

                    iface wlan0 inet dhcp
                    wpa-psk H9Q2Kg3d
                    wpa-ssid MIWIFI_qG6k

                    allow-hotplug wlan1
                    iface wlan1 inet dhcp
                    wpa-psk H9Q2Kg3d
                    wpa-ssid MIWIFI_qG6k

                    roland@antix1:/etc/network
                    $

The password will be useless, we live in a very remote area, and have few neighbours. Thanks for your efforts Xecure. I’ll look at your suggestion about using network manager.

Looking through this thread a couple of comments.

One, why has user roland not re installed from a backup after his experiment on a PC he states was previously working fine.

A point where image creation using the antix tools is a matter of a few minutes, same goes for reinstalling to the previously working setup.

Writing I do look forward to a way out of what I feel is the only let-down I have come across in my use of antiX, maybe by some upgrade of Ceni,
or even Wicd, but preferably to Connman. Am I likely to avoid these problems by investigating using wpa-supplicant from Control Centre ?

What does the result of his experiment have to make him post of a let down from antiX, forum, team or distro.

The response here is to try and help him get out of “issues he himself created”. Then in a post he responds about being let down by antiX.

“Maybe a good time to take a long hard look at the person who caused the problem, Bathroom Mirror should do fine for that”.
Sternly Remind the person concerned to make a backup before experiments and to take full responsibility for his messing up a working system.

Probably now the time for a reinstall rather than yet another reboot. Then when the system is working “Make a Backup and check it works”.

I freely admit that when looking for faults I look at myself first, as inexperience is my worst enemy. Regarding ‘let down’ I intended this remark as praise for antiX, as comms. connexions have been the only problems I have experienced for which instant assistance has not been almost totally effective. Sadly I took no backup because I was making a strictly hardware change, adding fans to the cpu radiator assemblies and failed to make a possible causal link between comms. and fans, if indeed there is one?

So I wish to thank all contributors to my problems especially Xecure who has been unstinting and mainly successful with his previous suggestions. I think to make the remark that comms. software related to Ceni Wicd Connman and Network Manager has room for improvement somewhere, would not be completely out of place. Ceni has problems which I have experienced, Connman will not wake up on any system I installed, Network manager I have not tried but will now do so, Wicd still looks favourite and I fail to understand why it is not the default.

Lastly experimenting with comms. is fraught with the danger that failure usually locks you out of your network, making a fix doubly complex often involving another working PC and copying files from the live one to the dead one. So I learned the caution of ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’, but this latest problem simply appeared, on an untouched PC.

                        Thanks to all contributors

As postscript I ran the script I made out of Xecure’s suggested fix sequence and obtained the wanted wlan connexion. Then I looked at the startup service table and moved networking to runlevel 1, it also exists at runlevel S which I left. There were entries at runlevels 3,4,5 and 6 for wicd even though it is not installed so I annulled them. All pure guesswork and probably quite irrelevant.

But now I seem to have a working system which connects in hotplug fashion as I want it to. I looked at the posts relating to installing network assistant and notice there have been similar problems to my own here, with a wlan up and running but refusing connexions. I have a standby PC and will try it out there first.

                          Thanks to all.

Perhaps it’s your hardware? What is your wireless network adapter? How old is your router? Have you tried Ethernet?

FWIW, I have yet to have CENI fail for me. It is my preferred tool for activating my wifi. But recently using Connman with antiX 19.4. It works fine for me.

I would re-install to start fresh. Save the /home partition. Or try to connect without security setup just to confirm operation.

All hardware in this build was newly bought, and the Comfast PCIe wifi adapter is for me a known quantity, I have 2 PCs built using it. It is necessary to use a kernel in the 5.xx range for the chipset and driver to be known in the headers.

I have recently experienced invalid signatures when running updates, which appear at first sight to be unrelated to comms. issues.

Ethernet cable connexion has never been used as the router is too far away. I used a plug-in Usb wifi adapter to get the initial updates done, which connected hotplug. Optic fibre router is a ZTE Corporation item supplied by the service provider which has been in use nearly a year without trouble.

My system is now stable and connects automatically when the wifi network is already running. If not running then becomes available, hotplug connection is usually not made. If I try to push things along by running Ceni manually, trouble usually starts, with a soft blocked interface wlan1, and related files present in /run/wpa_supplicant. This does not surprise me as they should be there if a hotplug connection is to succeed.

A am waiting for news of changes or improvements to Connman, but having already failed with it caution prevails.

The I tried both fixes but neither worked. The first seems to run to completion but the update returns the same bad signatures. The second fails because the required file has a different name from the one downloaded. The other file in the download folder is a text file, pasted below:-
