Hi!
I want to present here one big thanks to the Dev team for putting out a new version of app-select, that I just updated from the repo.
I noticed a change: the “Gears” icon on the bottom part of the window seems to do nothing now. Is that by design? If so, then probably it’s best just to remove it.
On the localization:
On pt-pt app-select is almost 100% localized! Very nice! (Only on line of text missing, for some reason – “Generic Name only”, on the filter options). I’m not sure if “Generic Name” (the name of the column/description of the .desktop field is supposed to get localized, I guess not)Small personal suggestion on the UI part: I suggest eliminating, on the non categories view, the text “Description”- it’s just one more word to localize, I may be a minimalist, but I like seeing only the app name itself and, in the line below, it’s description (there’s no need to tell me it’s a description). But I’m aware that the other lines also identify the Exec and categories field- and that makes sense to me- but then again, the name field does not say “name”- people know it’s the name.
It’s almost the perfect app, I like it so much that I use it as my “app selector” to add icons to the menu/toolbar, on FT10- it’s so good that I think there’s no need for me to use my own scripts for that!

I tried the new version of app select and here what I think of it:
1) Load time is still high ~5 seconds with 50% CPU load on my old laptop (2 cores 1.5ghz).
2) The columns buttons works but takes a few seconds to load.
3) The Gear/setting button is now running the app, it’s a bug in the new version, I think in the past there was launch button that not exist in this version.App Select 1.0.12

My bad. I tried my old, and I guess not updated, netbook – and, in fact, the “Gears” icon runs the selected app. If no app is selected, it does nothing (i.e- it’s not a “settings” button)

Is the gear icon for running the selected application?
I could never guess that. I thought the gear icon served to access the program’s settings.

Hum… I don’t think this “run icon” thing is important: app-select has been this way for ages- but I guess I always just pressed enter or doubled clicked the entry I wanted to run 🙂
By the way, I check some of the default icons in antiX: it seems that for programmers, “gears” do mean “run”! It makes some sense, gears do move, produce work…
PS: I did laugh a the “run-icon.png” proposed above. I’m not sure if most people that see it think “run” or “diet” 🙂

Eu pensava que os programas fossem “executados”.@marcelocripe – Come on… you’ve been around on-line translators enough to suspect that was some kind of translation problem:
In english “run” (in portuguese “correr”) a command is to “execute” a command (in portuguese “executar”).
That’s why icons of an animal and a human running were suggested. Even in portuguese we say “the program is running” (“o programa está a correr”)P.

Yes that button is to execute the selected app, has been that way for quite a while.
The name of the icon in the Gtk icon theme is “gtk-execute”; previously (in the first version written) the icon name used was “gtk-apply”. If there is a more fitting icon in standard Gtk icon themes feel free to suggest that name.Computers are like air conditioners. They work fine until you start opening Windows. ~Author Unknown
Dave, I have a (hum… stupid) suggestion, that could increase app-select’s loading speed (a problem on older computers).
While helping fix a big in jgmenu, I realized that the command “jgmenu-apps” parses, instantly, all .desktop files, already localized.
You can take a peek at it’s source code, and see how they do it, or have jgmenu be a dependency of app-select and use it to do the heavy lifting of getting the essential info from all the .desktop files…Note: on my netbook, app-select takes 7-8 to load. On my dual-core work desktop, it takes just about 2 seconds… so all that extra work would only benefit people will very old devices…

no problem. To me it always meant Launch. I guess it means execute executable. It is the same icon as a run box icon. Application finder has the word Launch; must be where i got that.
I really like App-Select; antiX staple.

I don’t say “that a program is ‘rodando'”, because it’s not a wheel and it’s not spinning. It hurts my ears hearing slang like “‘rodar’ a program”, “‘logar’ into the operating system”, “‘farmar’ in game”, etc. These are vulgar ways of communicating in Brazilian Portuguese that are not understandable by everyone because they are slang.
If there is a more fitting icon in standard Gtk icon themes feel free to suggest that name.
Dave, translating a word or phrase is always the best option. Images are not understandable by everyone.
For example, in another program, there are two buttons, where these buttons are not translatable. One button says “Cancel” and the other says “Ok”, but what “Ok” does in this program is the “Continue” action that is being explained in the window text of this program. If in this program that I used as an example the buttons were translated, I would translate the “Ok” button by “Continue”.– – – – –

Eu não digo “que um programa está ‘rodando'”, até porque não é uma roda e não está girando. Doi os meus ouvidos ter que ouvir gírias como “‘rodar’ um programa”, “‘logar’ no sistema operacional”, “‘farmar’ no jogo”, etc. Estas são formas chulas de se comunicar em Português do Brasil e que não são compreensíveis por todas as pessoas por se tratarem de gírias.

Dave, a tradução de uma palavra ou de uma frase é sempre a melhor opção. As imagens não são comprensíveis por todos.
Por exemplo, em um outro programa, existem dois botões, onde este botões não são traduzíveis. Em um botão está escrito “Cancelar” e no outro “Ok”, mas o que “Ok” faz neste programa é a ação “Continuar” que está sendo explicada no texto da janela deste programa. Se neste programa que eu utilizei como exemplo os botões fossem traduzidos, eu iria traduzir o botão “Ok” por “Continuar”.
