      Hi!

I’m thinking of upgrading the monitor of my 12 yr old desktop rig with a GeForce GTX 260 that has a DVI port. Right now I have a 23-inch Samsung LED-based monitor from 2011 (model S23A350H). It uses a TN panel, resolution 1,920×1,080 pixels. I think it was around $200 back then, so fairly low budget. It’s decent enough. I’d say the main drawback is viewing movies and digital photos. Photos look a lot more vivid and sharp on my phone (Retina HD display). Anyone got any tips on good monitors? Is there any point of having 4K on an old box? Or is that just going to drain resources?

The only thing I can think of is that if you do go 4K on the monitor it may be useful once you upgrade your desktop. Not sure how a 4K monitor will work if your current desktop and graphics don’t handle it. But maybe that graphics card you have will have no problem outputting 4K. You will have to deal with scaling of fonts, etc. on the very high def monitor. I prefer to stay at FullHD so I can comfortably see the text on my screen. I use Ctrl++ a lot to zoom in.

I also have a 23″ FullHD LCD screen in my office. I am happy with it for office work. I rarely use it for entertainment type applications. But I do drool every time I walk by the monitor section in Best Buy and wonder if I should upgrade.
