hello y’all! i finally made the jump to linux after way too much researches, and so far i’m really glad i came across this distro specifically, thank you all very much for contributing to such a wonderful community and forum ♥

with all that being said. i have trouble with the wireless on my new install. i know. i’m sorry.

i run antiX-19.3-runit_x64-base on an Acer Swift SF114-31 over live usb, and i’m currently following the various instructions to set it up on my hdd. so far i looked up this forum, debian’s forum, Xecure’s (really neat!) video guide with connman, and still can’t get my wifi to connect in order to update before installing. (i was also planning on moving to sid, but eh might not be the brightest idea right now if i’m already struggling with wifi…)

so, here’s the situation: i can access connman from the settings panels, i have no problem toggling wifi on which is confirmed by rfkill list, scanning works just fine, but the agent refuses to connect to my particular wifi. i enter the passphrase, it waits a few seconds, and then i get a connect-failed message. my wifi’s a WPA2-PSK/AES which to my understanding shouldn’t prove to be an issue, it might be the passphrase itself which has several “:” thrown in but that sounds like a stretch (i remember seeing some bug reports about some passphrase characters throwing off connman, but iirc these were hella old), and other that that i’m at a loss.

console log dump with things i checked so far:

      $ dmesg | grep 'ath\|firmw'

        Hi, and welcome.
So, what i understand so far is that.
        1. Connman can scan and you can seelct Wireless Access Points
        2. You can try and connect to them, even writing the password.
        3. Fails to connect to them because of an unknown error.

(For non-US keyboard) It may sound stupid, but make sure you have the correct keyboard layout selected, so you are sure the keys you press are the ones that correspond to the ones in the password.

If there are no double-quotes (“) symbols in your password, try connecting with ceni to see if at least this manager works.
Menu > Applications > antiX > antiX Wifi Switch -> And connect select CENI.

If CENI also cannot connect, I think this will be related to correct driver but you need a newer kernel. With one of my wifi USB adapters, which is also atheros, was detected but wouldn’t let me connect to anything until I updated to 4.19 kernel.

my wifi’s a WPA2-PSK/AES which to my understanding shouldn’t prove to be an issue, it might be the passphrase itself which has several “:” thrown in but that sounds like a stretch

I will try testing out later on a live antiX 19.3 base if connman also fails me with odd characters in the password.

Linux uses some special characters, & I think ‘:’ may be one, so try putting a \ just before it, & try again.

            hi, thanks for your help!
i was wary about keyboard layouts and character escaping, but neither of them were in fault… but, using CENI worked! i’m currently connected to the internet, thank you both very much!

Great news. That is one of the reasons both Ceni and COnnman are included in antiX. If one fails, the other could take its place.

Let us know if you find anything else your are having trouble with and we will help as best we can.
