I could not find a place for change requests/ ideas. So please feel free to move or delete this post, depending upon how it fits here (or not).

I know I have no real credentials, or deep experience, with antiX. So as a “novice”, I’d like to offer an idea for what I’d like to see in this wonderful, fast, light, distro.

It would save me a lot of time, not to mention breakage, if I could select the window manager/ file manager combination (s) I’d like to see on my install when I perform my initial build. For instance, right now I am trying to install, learn and use space-fluxbox. I really do not want to have Rox, icewm, jwm,… in that install. I know they do not consume a lot of space. However, if the distro is really about being “Lean” having the option to drop unwanted Window Managers, File Managers at install helps ‘thin things down’. Anyway, so much for my idea(s).

I certainly will survive with things they way they are. I’m perfectly happy breaking and fixing things until I get them “my way”. 😉

        You’re not the first. 😉

If I properly understood, there’s not much interest.

However, you can remove the most of it, even if some related ‘junk’ will still stay around.

manyroads, could you please explain in more detail how it wasted your time or how it caused a defect to have different possibilities ?

I’ve never had that problem , it’s also easy to stick with one decision.
In fact there were already requests like to offer icewm only, because that person found icewm to be the best and easiest. I don’t understand these requests.

To keep it short, I like the possibility to have a close look at all offered window-managers and to get to know the differences and the easy jumping between them.
This is one thing that sets antiX apart from other lightweight distributions.

In the past I have tried removing the others and found the savings to be minimal, like under 100 mb, which surprised me.

That was a couple years ago. It looks like anti posted a way to do it.

We all like different things, most seem to like IceWM, I prefer Fluxbox, & anti, I believe has a preference for Herbsluft tiling WM. It’s just easier to give a choice, for the sake of a few MBs on your disk. If we chose one you didn’t like, you might not use AntiX, but then, that would only be your loss. 🙂

                way, way less than 100Mb.
On antiX 17.4 Full, in synaptic search “icewm” and sortBy installed. Occupies less than 20Mb total.
Check the dependencies of those packages; removing them won’t free (orphan) many packages ~~ those same dependencies are used by the other WMs.

For JWM, the files for its packages occupy only 2Mb of disk space.

As mentioned in past topics, by culling the iceWM themes you’re not interested in using, you can quickly, easily pare down to 8Mb or less.

manyroads, after uninstalling iceWM and JWM you’ll want to edit /etc/slim.conf to remove the extraneous session choices. You will also want to edit /etc/skel/.fluxbox/menu and remove the “Desktops }} Other desktops” submenu item.

Do the math, calculate the permutations:
                32-bit
                64-bit
                net edition
                core edition
                base edition
                full edition
                antiX17, w/ stable repos
antiX17, w/ testing repos (I’m ignoring sid, but sid users have requested and have received support)
                antiX19
                antiX16 (still supported)
                antix15 (still supported, if unofficially)
PLUS nn available kernel versions, graphics drivers…

It’s already maddening trying to figure out which page someone is on,
each time someone posts a help request & doesn’t think to spell out the details of their chosen “permutation”.

if I could select the window manager/ file manager combination (s) I’d like to see on my install when I perform my initial build.

As pointed out (linked to, with explanation) in our {you+me+others} prior MX forum topics,
significant alteration // customization of “what’s in the box” can be accomplished by using
                https://gitlab.com/antiX-Linux/Build-iso
~~ significant alteration // customization is definitely not suited for stuffing into a “wizzzard, during time of install”

                ps:
It’s been a while, but “melodie” (French, accented e or somesuch) made a nice educational respin. During its creation she posted various inevitable questions to (now archived) antixforum & several folks pitched in to help. Also, kyle has shared his scripted mods to create “Legacy Ice” https://github.com/KERNELULTRAS/LegacyIce-antiX. Neither of these utilized build-iso; maybe your respin project will be recognized as the first to do so.
