pulseaudio -D & is set in .desktop-session/startup and pulseaudio is installed
but when I launch pavucontrol i get message
“establishing connection to PulseAudio…” which remains on screen

Is this your antiX core installation or a antiX base/full installation?
If this is your antiX core installation, you need to add that command to ~/.icewm/startup, as you are not using the antiX session system.pulseaudio -D &
You can check yourself if this command works by executing it in terminal, and then see if you can use pavucontrol.

Sorry for misremembering.
The problem is still there, when launching fluxbox, it is done ignoring the desktop-session configuration, so you need to add all startup commands to your fluxbox startup (as we did while guiding the core installation for Spacefm wallpaper and desktop)
Edit the startup file inside the ,fluxbox folder in your home folder and add the pulseaudio command there.antiX Live system enthusiast.
