Hi there!
I just thought I’d try installing and running LXDE sometimes. Just because I used to use LXDE a lot when I first got into Linux a few years ago.
I installed it via the (spiffy) antiX package installer. Nothing amiss as near as I could tell there. It seems that it also installed Openbox along with LXDE. Which makes sense. As I recall, Openbox was the WM for the LXDE desktop environment.
However neither LXDE nor Openbox worked for me. Even after rebooting and all that fun stuff. I just get a pop up from YAD (which I’m not familiar with), informing me that neither Openbox nor LXDE would work, so choose one of the regular WMs. Or that was the gist of it, anyway. It was a bit weird, because when I choose LXDE as a new desktop, it starts up and looks okay. But a few seconds later I get that YAD error message pop up thingy. And if I try selecting Openbox from the alternate desktops, I immediately get the YAD thing.
Am I missing something that needs installing via Synaptic or the terminal? Or should I just not bother trying to use either? And if they are a lost cause, do I use Synaptic to remove LXDE (and Openbox).
Thanks in advance.

::If so, click “disable window” and it won’t appear again for LXDE.
If you read it carefully you’ll see it is giving you the option that automatically is available with the normal antiX window manager “desktop > other desktops” menu item. (It also comes up if/when you launch herbstluftwm the for first time.)
If you ever want to access that yad window again (on purpose), do: “applications > accessories > other desktops”
But LXDE (& openbox) works great on antiX. 🙂

::Mynaardt, there’s already a very good respin of antix that uses openbox https://linuxvillage.org/en/blog/2022/01/23/bento-antix-x86_64-full/ you might choose to use it permanently or just try it out and study how the author, Melodie, got all the moving pieces working.

Got it! Thanks.
Just for the record, I’ve got the ASD & ADHD things happening. So somethings that might be obvious to others aren’t so much for me. The ‘Disable’ part threw me off, I thought that meant ‘disable LXDE’ (or Openbox). As opposed to ‘disable this warning and s***’. But, oh well. I do have it working, so I can use LXDE if I really ,really, really want to.
And that will teach me to be a little less likely to jump to conclusions regarding whatever error messages I might encounter.
Seriously, though, thanks for pointing that out to me. Appreciate it!

I did not know that! I’ll check it out.
I was actually looking at trying to use LXDE more out of nostalgia than anything else. I’m quite happy with iceWM, JWM, and Fluxbox. There was a learning curve to be had for all three, but that’s only to be expected. But these minimalist WMs and DEs work fine for me, once I spent a bit of time getting to learn them.
I actually prefer WEs and DMs that are kind of Spartan. I’m just too easily distracted by eye candy; that’s just one of my foibles.

I did check out that Linux Village site and looked at at Bento antiX you mentioned.
I didn’t actually install it, but I must say, it does look good. I can see how that would be a good choice for a netbook.

::Some people ask why there are so many different systems and different distributions.
We know that it’s easy to add packages to antiX and remaster it. This is another good example. No, this remastered effort is not an official version of antiX. The person who made it may do it again and maybe they won’t.
I create my own antiX variations all the time; generally they are for one person: me. However on two separate occasions in the past I have helped people get a little more time out of their system and I created two remastered works for two different people who have different interests and different needs than me.
Basically what I did was speak with them and found out exactly what they used their computer for and then I put the software, even the browser with exactly what they use; that way each thing they used was a click away.
Depends on what we want, how much we put into it and how we prefer to do it; antiX is quite flexible and customizable.
That, in a nutshell is why there are so many systems and so many variations; different people like different things and that’s very good; I appreciate it that antiX can meet the needs of many people; understand that there are other people who want things different and that’s why we have different distributions and different systems too.
