      Hello,

      I can’t install an NVIDIA driver for the 900 series (the exact reference is GTX960 launched in 2015)
      I go through the Nvidia Driver Installer in the Control Center.
      Here is what it has been offering me for several weeks.

      Installed is:  (none)

      Which driver do you wish to install

      Main repos or debian-backports?

      1: Main 418.181.07-1

      2: MX Test 460.39-1~bpo10+1

      3: Exit

      Enter Number of selection

      The 418 driver does not install. This driver is quite old.
      I tried to install driver 460 (test) but it gives me a black screen.
      I tried several kernels but it doesn’t change anything, I still get the 2 drivers 418 and 460 test.
      With MX Linux, I use the 450 driver which works really well because I use for example the Webrender for hardware acceleration in Firefox.

      You can guess that I would like to install driver 450 to remove the screen tearing that annoys me on my screen.

      Best regards,
      Wallon

        Hi Wallon, it’s not clear to me why the graphic part of inxi is looking like that. It’s an installed system, yes ? Normally the nouveau-driver should be used ?
        Did you boot the live-stick before the installation with any special options like safe video ?

        I got the same nvidia-card on my desktop, for booting the live-stick I use the boot-parameters ” xorg=nouveau nouveau.modeset=1 ”
        I don’t use safe-video or something.
        Then it uses the nouveau-driver correctly.

        Until now there have not been any problems to install the nvidia-driver afterwards on the installed system.

        We first have to look why the system uses the modesetting driver instead of nouveau.
        Do you use any bootparameters ?
        cat /proc/cmdline

        Is there anything relevant blacklisted (nouveau or nvidia) in /etc/modprobe.d/ or /usr/lib/modprobe.d/ ?

        Also, before you try to install the nvidia-driver once again, you should remove the old one with
        sudo ddm-mx -p nvidia

        Edit: Is there a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file ?

          Wallon, I made a clean little test-install, installed kernel 4.19.152-antix.1-amd64 and after reboot installed the nvidia 418.181.0 with the nvidia-installer.
          This worked without problems, even though I had to delete my old boot parameters (nouveau.modeset=1) and had to delete a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file which also referred to the nouveau driver.

          System:
            Host: antix1 Kernel: 4.19.152-antix.1-amd64-smp x86_64 bits: 64

            base: Debian GNU/Linux 10 (buster)
          Graphics:
            Device-1: Intel Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics
            vendor: Gigabyte driver: i915 v: kernel bus ID: 00:02.0
            Device-2: NVIDIA GM206 [GeForce GTX 960] vendor: Micro-Star MSI

            Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.4 driver: modesetting,nvidia

            direct render: Yes

          So it’s possible, you might have only some leftovers from the nvidia installation or from the nouveau driver somewhere.
          I will now go on, remove the nvidia-driver again and look to install the latest from backports.

          Edit: No Problem again.

          The driver 460 nvidia builds against the 4.19.152 kernel, so your problem is probably due to leftover configurations, please remove the old driver before installing a new one. You can do this without rebooting in between.

            Dear Caprea,

            Each week, I do a fresh install in English US to test the installation of NVIDIA driver.
            In this case, it’s also a fresh automatic install on a USB key.

            Your question;
            Did you boot the live-stick before the installation with any special options like safe video?

            No (full automatic)

            Your question;
            I got the same nvidia-card on my desktop, for booting the live-stick I use the boot-parameters ” xorg=nouveau nouveau.modeset=1 ”

            As my keyboard is not Querty, it’s not possible to use the boot options with a Belgian computer. Ref please to my previous topic (not solved);
            https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/usblive-why-is-it-not-possible-to-get-the-right-keyboard-directly-for-belgium/

            Your question;
            I don’t use safe-video or something.

            Idem (Same) for me, I don’t use safe-video or something.

            Please find detail for cat /proc/cmdline. Remember, this is a fully automatic installation.

            an@MSI:~
            $ cat /proc/cmdline
            BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-4.19.152-antix.1-amd64-smp root=UUID=7da674d4-292a-42aa-b0a5-dd717bc90c00 ro quiet
            an@MSI:~

            Your question;
            Is there anything relevant blacklisted (nouveau or nvidia) in /etc/modprobe.d/ or /usr/lib/modprobe.d/ ?
            I don’t know. Please find my screenshot. Would you please tell me if I should open a file and check something?

            Your question;
            Also, before you try to install the nvidia-driver once again, you should remove the old one with sudo ddm-mx -p nvidia.
            What to remove, it’s a fresh installation. Nothing has been installed. I have typed “3) Exit” at the end of Nvidia installation process.

            Your question;
            Edit: Is there a /etc/X11/xorg.conf file ?
            Please find my screenshot. Would you please tell me if I should open a file and check something?

            Best regards,
            Wallon

              Dear caprea,

              This time I was able to install the 460 driver and remove the screen tearing with the magic command!
              Control Centre > Session > User Desktop-Session > startup (tab). Add it at the end of the file.

              # Set nvidia driver non-screen tearing mode
              nvidia-settings --assign CurrentMetaMode="nvidia-auto-select +0+0 { ForceFullCompositionPipeline = On }" &

              In my dmesg log, I have a warning (udevd192 Error) regarding NVIDIA. I don’t know if I have to do something.

                Good news and thanks for posting your solution for screen tearing.
                As for the error warning, I’ve been living with it for a few years now, but never noticed any problems.

                  wallon,

                  glad you solved the tearing. the 450 nvidia driver is in debian testing/bulleseye and
                  unstable branches if either of you want to test it out.
