      Hello,
The sound disappeared after a (long) while on otherwise working installation. It was back after one or two updates, but finally cannot be restored. The choice of the sound card is correct (and did not change) as well as the mixer. Does anybody have suggestions on how to try fixing this from the command line? Thanks!

@omx, please open your own thread on this topic.it is misleading if you post your inxi-output here.someone might think it is the inxi from the OP.
By the way, good idea for loss of sound is to first check the two things I posted above.
              No offense.

Sometimes antiX muted my speakers when I plugged my headphones and did not unmute (the speakers) after that. Also, strangly enough, some web browsers messed with my volume (the gnome browser, I forgot it’s name)!…

Like Caprea said, please check if the main volume is not muted, using alsamixer (you can also try it from the terminal or menu > run) then try to play a sound file (or a video file with audio).

                P.

thanks for your message, no offense taken.. Sorry for the confusion, didnt meant to hijack. Not entirely sure what I meant to be looking at, but from the results of your suggestion I can see no hint personally? If you can provide no pointers I will possibly start a topic of my own.. thanks

                    1. check alsamixer?
                    $ alsamixer

colums in blank mean they are MUTED, press M, adjust volume, repeat on the other columns, when finished, press Esc

Not sure if it was changing the alsamixer settings or if it was a reboot, but my sound is now back,,, thank you for the suggestions.

Thank you all for your suggestions. To clarify, it is 19.2. It was working with 17.4 and 19.2 later. Nothing is muted.I suspect it is about the sound card connection, though CC says that it was able to find the card, but sound test fails. I will post more info later on. Thanks!

That output “Playing WAVE ‘/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav’ : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
” is normal, but you should also hear a voice saying “Front Center”)
If you can, test sound on an antiX live media (dvd-rom or live usb), or using another OS- it may be hardware problem…
Also, please send your Quick System Info, so folks here can try to find out what’s wrong with your system…

Miguel5: I know nothing about audio, usually on a fresh install I get this problem. What i do:

                                1. Wiggle the sound cable on the back of the tower on my old Celeron desktop.
                                2. Check with alsamixer for muted channels.
                                3. Do apt-cache search for alsa, and install alsa-utils and alsa-tools and any alsa-lib i’m guessing it’ll help.
                                4. google my eyes out (debian wiki, arch wiki, etc)
                                5. One time after all this crazy shit, i realized my speakers were not ON.
                                6. Stay away from Pulseaudio.
                                7. Finally, look about getting a new card.

                                Buena suerte, bro…

As I mentioned, Front_Center does not play. The hardware is fine, because MX on the same machine (different partition) works fine. Here is some relevant info:
