      I see your hardware info shows 2 sound card devices.
      Try: control centre > hardware > sound card chooser.
      Whichever is active, choose the other & try sound test again.

        Thanks, all my hardware is built-in. All alsa utilities are installed and mixer is not muted. The MX on the same machine has no sound problems. So, it is specifically Antix thing…

          Not trying to be argumentative. I just thought that since you wrote that antiX sees 2 devices, it may be using the wrong one as default:

          Audio: Device-1: Intel Haswell-ULT HD Audio vendor: Dell driver: snd_hda_intel v: kernel bus ID: 00:03.0 Device-2: Intel 8 Series HD Audio vendor: Dell driver: snd_hda_intel v: kernel bus ID: 00:1b.0 Sound Server: ALSA v: k4.9.212-antix.1-amd64-smp

            Thank you. I am grateful for all suggestions and do not perceive them as arguments. Do you know how to check which one is being used by Antix or Mx (on the same machine)? I thought (maybe naively) that both devices are to be used.

              Try: control centre > hardware > sound card chooser.
              Whichever is active, choose the other & try sound test again.

              Launch the Control Centre on the main menu. There is a tab on the left labeled “hardware.” Click that. Then click on “Sound Card Chooser.” I suspect that both should be shown as options. If one is marked as in use currently, then try the other one. And run the test sound again. (Try all options.)

              (I’ve got my fingers crossed… 🙂 )

                Couple more things you might check.

                Do you have an .asound.conf in your home, note. it is a hidden file so instruct your
                file manager accordingly.

                #Substitute N with a small integer, 0 for your first sound card (which is the default),
                #1 for your second, and so on.

                pcm.!default {
                type hw
                card 0
                }

                ctl.!default {
                type hw
                card 0
                }

                You should also have an .asoundrc mine looks this way

                defaults.pcm.!card PCH
                defaults.ctl.!card PCH

                Firefox can mess with media keys, and cause sound loss.
                Happened to me a while back. To ensure that is not the issue.

                Launch Firefox
                Visit about:config
                Click “Accept the Risk and continue”
                Search for “media.hardwaremediakeys.enabled” and click on the toggle icon to change its pref value to false.

                restart firefox Then check media keys are not still set to mute.

                  First, MX uses a 4.19 kernel by default, while antiX, to cater to old computers, uses a 4.9 kernel. Maybe updating the kernel may help. But before that, test XMMS and see if changing the card manually there leads to sound coming out.

                  3. Test with XMMS to check if it is related to the Alsa card chooser program or the driver (you will need a song or any audio file for testing the audio on XMMS). Open XMMS, right-click anywhere, go to Options > Preferences. There, at the bottom of the new window, you should see “ALSA 1.2.11 output plugin” for Output Plugin. Hit configure and select the correct audio device. Remember what you saw in step 0, as you will have to select the correct audio device based on what you are using (after selecting, check the value for hw:X,Y where X is the card and Y is the audio device, comparing to what you saw in aplay -l output). Hit OK and test the audio by playing something with XMMS.

                  Read all the steps to follow that I wrote some time ago: https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/fresh-install-no-sound-antix-19-2/#post-36314

                  See if anything there helps.

                    Set default sound card… Must be done from sudo

                    Open alsa mixer with sudo press F6 or S select your card then type sudo alsactl store.

                    sudo alsamixer

                    sudo alsactl store

                    and

                    Setting the default device
                    Jump to: navigation, search

                    Find your desired card with:

                    cat /proc/asound/cards

                    and then create /etc/asound.conf with following asound.conf is for system wide sound. OR .asoundrc is for user and stored in your home directory only use one not both.

                    defaults.pcm.card 1
                    defaults.ctl.card 1

                    Replace “1” with number of your card determined above.

                        I found .asundrc and it is set to default PCH. Another card listed in the cc-hardware-sound is HDMI BUT when I change to HDMI in cc the message is: cannot connect to the card. I do not understand what would change if I I set HDMI manually in .asoundrc…

                          Thanks. That’s what I did a few times before posting the question :). Two cards are listed in the cc-hardware-sound PCH and HDMI. PCH is getting connected and “passes” the sound test but I do not hear the sound. When I change to HDMI in cc the message is: “cannot connect to the card.”

                            I checked the sound settings on the USB stick with Antix, which I used to install to HD. I set the same settings on the HD version and it works now. I should have done so before posting the question. I apologize. Thank you all for your help and support.

                              For hdmi sound you may need to add the device number. I don’t use hdmi myself but this may help you.

                              cat /proc/asound/cards OR aplay -l to list your sound cards

                              HDMI audio on default alsa device

                              Solved!

                              I’ve created file /etc/asound.conf in this way:

                              defaults.pcm.card 1
                              defaults.pcm.device 7
                              defaults.ctl.card 1

                              and rebooted the system.

                              remember: in my case “1” is the card number and “7” is device number found in aplay -l output.

                                Thanks. I think I’ll stick with PCH. HDMI I have on three devices (3,7,8) but I am not sure which one is audio device. At least one of them is VGA device…
