      Hi to readers,

first, if you want an overview of my computer, check my first post:
      https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/403-forbidden-for-system-updates/

sound was working before in seamonkey but not since the last two versions (12 and 13).
i had to remove the last version first (11), cause it wouldn’t install the new otherwise. then via synaptic, I updated, looked for seamonkey and
      instaled the last version (12).
but no more sound via seamonkey.
and with the version 13 neither.
I checked alsamixer, nothing is mute, i disabled the automute. no change.
I had to enable it back cause it brought sound from the computer above the sound of the speakers in vlc.
via F6, I selected my speakers; but still nothing.
see the pictures of my alsamixer attached.

via the terminal, I tried to remove pulseaudio but it is not instaled; and I checked synaptic, apulse is instaled.

as suggested here (https://oldforum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?p=1057904): trying apulse seamonkey from the terminal, it opens seamonkey but still no sound.

then, from https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/have-sound-in-firefox-no-sound-in-seamonkey/: I tried to modify the desktop file in /usr/share/applications to read:
      Exec=apulse /opt/seamonkey/seamonkey %u
but it refused to modify the file saying “Unable to open the file for writing”.
though I connected as root via the terminal before doing that.

then I tried apulse /opt/seamonkey/seamonkey %u from the terminal, but still nothing.

I want to keep apulse as my computer is an old one.

there is also this in post #12 in https://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=150955 but i’m not sure, it seems quite technical.

      this page : http://kb.mozillazine.org/Mozilla_Suite_:_Issues_:_Sound
it tells me i’m missing some plugins.
if this is the solution, do you know which plugins is the lightest fo an old computer?
I looked at them quickly and java seems the best; but when I looked for it, I only found a debugger add-on
which i’m not sure is useful.

it also says it may be linked to me installing vlc, that could enter in conflict with whatever is already instaled on seamonkey as a sound device. apparently, I have “no installed plugins found” when I look for them.

Can anyone bring any light in any of these directions?

      Thanks in advance

Did you install seamonkey via the Package Installer?

Not sure what version 11 and 12 refer to since the latest version of seamonkey is 2.53.13

I just tried the video here: https://antixlinux.com/

          after opening like this
          apulse /opt/seamonkey/seamonkey %u

          and sound works.

Hi ava, please slow down a bit. Let us faultfind from the beginning.

Assuming you have a full version please check if sound device is correctly set and speakers working from control center.
If not and you have an external sound system please check it is working using another device.

Sea monkey sound is not dependent on plugins. versions you quoted are confusingly unfamiliar. Please install using the package
installer. and let us know if you get sound output at all.

              Side note:
For youtube etc there are far better and lighter solutions than browsers.

You have an older computer. VLC is a wonderful application but heavyweight.
MPV with some user settings is the faster lighter player.
SM Tube or powerful but console based ytfzf excellent.
with an alias just tap in yt. yt=’ytfzf –pages=2′ for example.

thanks anticapitalista the prefix command apulse works. to define the call with App Select use file /usr/share/applications/ add apulse in the seamonkey desktop file. good luck ava.

thank you all for your replies.
sorry for wrongly labeling; I wrote “version 12”, “13” etc, in reference to 2.53.12; 2.53.13; etc. I do have the correct version which I got from the control center.

I tried to understand more the problem.

at first, when I execute your command anticapitlista, it worked. I don’t know why it didn’t work the first time I tried, before sending the help message.

but I don’t know what I did next, and now the icon of sound in the taskbar at the bottom right of my computer disappeared.
                  and sound doesn’t work anymore.
see attached the message I get from the terminal.

secondly, Moddlt, you are completely right, I went too fast. actually I have problems with my external speakers from the start with antix. I think they are not recognized properly. they don’t work well with vlc : I have to make the sound adjustments trough the equalizer each time I open it, and I don’t manage to get it smooth.
with MPV it seems better, but sound is low and I can’t augment it cause my taskbar icon disappeared…

these speakers are Altec Lansing XT1; it’s a portable usb-powered audio system and they have there own sound card. I think part of the problem lies here and the settings are probably just wrongly done.
when I connect the computer to another set of speakers with a jack plug, the sound come from both my computer soundcard and the jack. can you explain also where to make those sound choices?

thank you also for the suggestion about youtube. I actually don’t use youtube via seamonkey, I go through SMTube which is a
                  great tool.

I also confirmed that seamonkey allows sound through services such as Youtube; do note that we also offer alternative mechanisms to efficiently display and play video content. (See comments in posts above).

Hi ava, busy day so very short, I would remove vlc, it is a great applicate but a heavyweight.
                      sudo apt remove browser-plugin-vlc
                      sudo apt purge vlc
                      sudo apt autoremove

Please setup sound using the Controll Center Hardware Tab.

I am assuming the altec speakers are clipping (Sounds Terrible) due to a too high input level,
On a sensitive input stage you can also kill the amplifier so start with pre amp and output volume
low in the mixer. Package is alsamixer-equalizer-antix maybe reinstall that and antix-goodies
just to be as sure as possible setup is ok.

On USB you have no Pre Out so will need to play with Pre and Vol settings in the Mixer.

You should (I Hope) be able to set the volume icon to show using a setting in
                      /home/yourusername/.desktop-session/startup

                      ## Puts a volume icon on the taskbar
                      volumeicon &

But maybe something else is broken and we will need to investigate further.

                        hi ModdIt,

                        thanks for your time.
I removed vlc as you advised. sound didn’t work anymore with this software anyway.
I looked for the “.desktop-session” file but couldn’t find it. I learned here why (https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/desktop-session-startup-not-working/): i’m running with jwm minimal so those files don’t appear.
what is the procedure in that case?

when I run the command : $ sudo ps_mem.py | grep desktop-session” as suggested in the post, I get an answer that the desktop
                        bar is using 970KiB.
then it is suggested to modify the startup commands via ~/.jwm/startup file.
but I don’t know where those files are.

                        then, with $ cat ~/.desktop-session/desktop-code.0″, I get zzz-jwm
                        and with $ cat ~/.desktop-session/desktop-session.conf | grep “LOAD_STARTUP\|STARTUP_DELAY””
                        STARTUP_DELAY=”2″
                        LOAD_STARTUP_FILE=”true”

and when I execute this to know about the startup file permissions:
                        $ ls -lh /home/Ava/.desktop-session | grep startup
                        It shows: $-rwxr-xr-x 1 Ava Ava 2,0K 1 janv. 2006 startup

                        when I execute $ volumeicon, I get $ volumeicon: alsa_backend.c :86 : asound_get_volume:L” has failed. drop out

                        what do you think?

                          Hi ava
What I think, you need someone who really understands JWM.
                          Or a pragmatic workaround.
Maybe you might try to setup sound with JWM or ICEWM then change to
                          your minimal choice.

I just switched from ICEWM (my desktop choice) to JWM and JWM minimal,
quick test, sound is fine with ytfzf and firefox in both so seems if
you already have a working setup it should (I hope) be ok in other
                          desktops.

I managed to get sound in seamonkey.
first I understood there were hidden files in home/username.
then I opened as root the seamonkey startup file via /usr/share/applications.
                              and I added apulse line 53 as follows: Exec=apulse /opt/seamonkey/seamonkey %u.
now I have another problem with my volume icon which disappeared from my taskbar but I’ll open a new thread for that matter.
                              thanks to all.
the topic can be marked as solved.
