I’m coming back here to bring you some information.

felipecardope told me that his antiX 19.3 was totally muted after a few days of using pulseaudio for the ZSNES to have the sound. I also had problems in antiX after installing pulseaudio for ZSNES.

The experiences I had with pulseaudio were not good. On 7 computers that I tested, on 3 computers the sound worked perfectly with pulseaudio in the programs that the audio didn’t work, but it was only before restarting antiX, after restarting, antiX was silent, there was no sound, not even in the browser Firefox ESR web browser and not an MP3 video or audio file. In the other 4 computers, the sound worked perfectly with pulseaudio in the programs that the audio didn’t work, so my experience was traumatic with pulseaudio and I don’t have confidence in this solution.

In these tests I enabled and disabled pulseaoudio with the commands:

To activate pulseaudio, in the terminal and I applied the command:

      pulseaudio -D &

To disable pulseaudio, in the terminal and applied the command:

      pulseaudio -k

But even disabling pulseaudio, antiX remained silent.

      – – – – –

        Hi marcelocripe,

If I understand your summary, 4/7 computers did enable audio in zsnes, but in the other 4 computers, installing Pulseaudio caused audio to stop in many applications – after a reboot.

If you disabled and then restarted Pulseaudio, did it enable audio?

In alsamixer, is Pulseaudio listed as the sound server?

          For sound on zsnes:
          Please try the following
Look for the hidden file in your home directory ~/.znes/zsnesl.cfg

          Under sound change the line
          libAoDriver=”auto”

          to
          libAoDriver=”sdl”

            Hello Stevesr0 and Caprea.

…but in the other 4 computers, installing Pulseaudio caused audio to stop in many applications – after a reboot.

For now, the other 4 computers the sound works, activating and deactivating pulseaudio, but I don’t know why it works with one computer (sound card) and with the other it is completely muted.

If you disabled and then restarted Pulseaudio, did it enable audio?

On the computers that had the problems, I installed Pulseaudio and the ZSNES got the sound, it was muted after restarting antiX. Even when I use the command to disable Pulseaudio, the computer remains silent. If I apply the command to activate Pulseaudio, the computer remains silent.

In alsamixer, is Pulseaudio listed as the sound server?

With the command $inxi -Fxz, the text part that displays the audio details, displays both Alsamixer and Pulseaudio as sound servers. If I apply the command to enable Pulseaudio, in $inxi -Fxz it displays that Pulseaudio is enabled. If I apply the command to disable Pulseaudio, in $inxi -Fxz it displays that Pulseaudio is disabled. But on computers that have gone silent, none of that makes any difference, it’s as if Alsamixer has stopped working because of Pulseaudio.
I will check the zsnesl.cfg file from the ~/.znes/ folder. The graphical interface displays the sound enabled option. Thanks for this tip.

            Olá Stevesr0 e Caprea.

…but in the other 4 computers, installing Pulseaudio caused audio to stop in many applications – after a reboot.

If you disabled and then restarted Pulseaudio, did it enable audio?

In alsamixer, is Pulseaudio listed as the sound server?

I even started to share the .desktop files, one to activate Pulseaudio and the other to deactivate Pulseaudio in
Internet Archive, but if Pulseaudio mutes computers, I don’t think it’s good to keep this help for people.

              – – – – –

Caprea, yesterday I did another test, this time it was on Teotonio’s computer, I didn’t install PulseAudio, I just changed the settings in the “zsnesl.cfg” file as you explained. ZSNES remains silent when Wine is installed on antiX 21 64bit.

                – – – – –

Maybe I missed it, but did anyone try using PAVUControl to switch inputs and outputs with Pulseaudio?

(I use PAVUControl with Pipewire <g>), and it is simple and very effective [as long as I use the antiX custom kernels}.)

Please post the output when you start zsnes from the terminal.
Agree with stevesr0, pavucontrol is necessary for pulseaudio.

                      Hello Caprea and Stevesr0.

I performed the sequence below, following the commands taught by Caprea in the topic My video Camera has stopped working. After I applied each command, I tested the ZSNES to see if there was sound or not. After the last command “pulseaudio –start”, the ZSNES started to emit the sound. I restarted the computer and the ZSNES started to emit the sound most of the time after the command “pulseaudio –start” or with the click of the .desktop file that I share in Internet Archive which now has this command to help other people not need to apply commands in Terminal.

I noticed that the Chromium web browsers and Firefox on YouTube emit the sound at a lower volume when PulseAudio is activated, with AlsaMixer it emits the sound at a higher volume.

As soon as possible, I will continue testing on computers that have gone completely silent and if it still doesn’t work, I will install PAVUControl as instructed by Stevesr0.

                      Grateful.

                      – – – – –

                      Olá Caprea e Stevesr0.

Eu realizei a sequência abaixo, seguindo os comandos ensinados pelo Caprea no tópico My video Camera has stopped working.

                      Grato.

Using only PipeWire, ZSNES on antiX 21/22 full 64-bit outputs sound without the need for PulseAudio. Follow the tutorial Pipewire to manage audio in antiX 21 that the Xecure created.
ZSNES on 32-bit antiX 21/22 full outputs the sound without the need for PipeWire or PulseAudio.

Another option is to use 64-bit Snes9x on 64-bit antiX 21/22 full which doesn’t need PipeWire or PulseAudio to output sound. The .deb package together with a tutorial (in Brazilian Portuguese and in French – thanks to Rantanplan) can be downloaded:
