Hello nice people,
I’m gonna try to be as clear as possible, but coming from a noob like me it shouldn’t be a problem to be understoodI was robbed and my colleague gently passed me this old desktop computer with AntiX-17_386-full Heather Heyer, installed.
It’s my 1st time under linux. I have windows and mac experience, only one i had with cmd line was to grab my IP adress or something..
When he passed it to me, the admin password wasnt working so i had to reinstalled everything via Bootable USB, settled admin and now i can run package manager and all…
I understand / use only 0.5% of this OS but i want to learn more.– As i understand i’m running an old version of AntiX, I f i wanted to upgrade to AntiX 19 how should i proceed?
– How do i create a USB live bootable? The only thing i used was Rufus and i dont think i can use it here..
– My Firefox is out dated (?) when i install the newer version, i have no sound, my bookmarks are lost /or all over the place
– I have a CD-ROM on this computer but it seems dead or / not respondingAlso, i have started a class to learn Python, and i cant seems to install Visual Studio Code, Python 3.7 etc etc
My teacher told me to run Ubuntu 19.10, Fedora or else it will be easier for me….(is it?)
Well anyway i dont know how to create a bootable USB so there’s no point here.Oh Yeah. I’m french, my english is ok but for IT? Not so sure.
So I’d love someone to point me to some directions, everytime i want to do something i just can’t, its a bit (really) frustrating…Old habits from windows like install a new program is completely useless for exampleThis are my specs:

::Thank you!
I didn’t installed new Firefox, im using the provided version from Browser. (what i described happened on the previous install i did before i reboot.)> Concerning the Bootable USB, i misspelled, i don’t want to use a Live USB(meaning an OS running from the uSB right?)
I downloaded antiX-19_x64-full.iso and i want to create the ISO on a USB from antiX 17 not from Windows…I don’t want to go through command line to update cause this is the only comp at home, i wont be able to follow steps and update at the same time 😀 So i want to install Nineteen from the USB
(Also now i’m running a 32bits version of antiX, but my CPU is 64, so should i install Nineteen 64 or 32?)> Will i be able to install Visual Studio Code on Nineteen?
(as i said: noob)

::Very likely it’s the easiest to make a new installation of antix19.
All you need is the downloaded iso from downloadside, don’t take the runit-version, take a full version,
and a usb-stick.
On your antix17 you can now create a live-usb.
control-centre > storage media > Live USB MakerThen you automatically have a newer version of firefox, if you want the very latest go to
control-centre > system > package installer
look for browserwill be continued later..

::For some reason, my external hardrive doesnt show up on anymore since i updated to 19…
Is it related to the 64bit version i use now, instead of 32 for antiX17?Is there any command i need to execute to mount it?

::Try deleting /etc/fstab file and then running in a terminal
sudo make-fstabPhilosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.
antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

::Hmmm so i looked for the fstab file within the terminal, it is there, but i cant remove it
Permission not granted
Is there a way to delete it outside of the terminal?*edit: i cant delete it either, same error message. *this file is protected & permission not granted

::Hi! I’m a few days late into this post, so you probably should already have all the solutions to the questions in your Original Post, even so, just because this may be handy for other newbies (it stumped me a bit when I was a bit fresher using antiX):
In case you want to use “Firefox” and not “Firefox ESR” that comes out of the box with antiX full, you can, for example download the latest version from the mozilla website, or install it using the Control Centre. It runs fine but without audio. Like VW said audio in Firefox requires apulse. In antiX full I belive apulse comes installed out of the box. To have audio output you have to start it (from the terminal or a shortcut)
apulse firefox
(in case you installed Firefox from a deb file or from the Control Centre) or something likeapulse /full/path/to/firefox…in case you just unziped the firefox files from the Mozilla website.
If you dig around the forum, there’s a post about automating running firefox with apulse. Or, if you use the deafault Icewm desktop, you could just add a icon that runs “apulse firefox” to the toolbar (just ask around if you need help with that)
The latest antiX, 19, is great, but I also had many problems mounting other partitions and internal drives, when I updated to that version… I didn’t want to mess with fstab so I just ran “gksudo mount /dev/sdb5 /mnt” (“sdb5” is the partition antiX refused to mount).
Because I use SpaceFm as my default file manager, I added a new menu entry called “Mount MX partition” to SpaceFM, that runs that exact command. (To do this open SpaceFM- Tools … and create the new menu there, it’s not hard… I currently have a couple more commands, one being “mount Google Drive”, the other mounts my android phone. SpaceFm is very flexible that way…P.

::Well well…
1/ I actually renamed it to fstab.bak and created another fstab.
Now i have fstab.bak and fstab in /etc
And i cant remove any of them. It still tells me file is write-protected (both file are now write-protected)I plugged a usb stick and it shows up…but if i plug my external hd it open a window => /media/mycomputername/EFI
This is empty as wellDecember 16, 2019 at 4:12 pm #30801Moderator

::So, does
sudo rm /etc/fstab.baknot work for you ?
It looks like the external hard drive is being mounted. No idea why the mountpoint is empty.
How is the hard disk formatted?March 18, 2022 at 5:14 pm #79321Member

::Hey that sort of helped today actually. I used:
apulse firefox
and it worked!
However, if I close and restart firefox the sound is back off.
Is there a way to make sound work in firefox automatically?March 18, 2022 at 5:32 pm #79324MemberPPC
::Is there a way to make sound work in firefox automatically?
Yes.
Menu > Terminalsudo geany /usr/share/applications/firefox.desktop
Find the line:
Exec=firefox %uand replace it with:
Exec= apulse firefox %uSave the file and exit.
Now every time you start firefox from the menu/toolbar icon/ desktop icon it will always run with apulse and have sound. If you launch it from the terminal, you still have to use the command you previoulsy used…P.

::Hi, regarding the out-of-date browsers, this was discussed elsewhere, see e.g.
https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/why-firefoxesr-68-instead-of-firefox78/
https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/split-firefox-getting-newer-versions/Long story short:
1) Be aware of the difference: Firefox ESR (supported but not the latest/highest FF version) vs. latest FF.
@PPC already hinted at this.
2) If FF (ESR-channel or “standard”) in the repository lags behind the latest released: Download FF as a ZIP file from Mozilla’s web page, unpack and manually start FF from file-manager or terminal/command-line.
This downloaded binary allows for automatic updates and hence it is easy to keep up to date (I prefer to disable automatic installing of updates but keep the check for updates). -
