To be honest, I don’t play much with the old Pentium’s much anymore. They have lots of limitations, so realistically are only used to test if things will work on limited systems.
I’m pretty happy with my antiX based 64 bit machines running IceWM. They do almost all the things I need. I have other distro’s loaded, but rarely run them. IceWM is quite comfortable for me still having to use Windows at work all day and all.
I would like to learn more programming, like C++ is the main one I’d like to learn, so I would be able to add simple features that I would like to see to programs where the Dev’s aren’t willing to add them. Unfortunately there are no good classes to learn it that I have found so far, the programs that I’d like to add features to are super-complex and almost undocumented internally, and the language and methodology are like night and day compared to what I’m used to working on.
Maybe I’ll just do nothing computer wise, work on my garden, and take plenty of bike rides and naps this year instead of pushing so hard all the time…

::Don’t force yourself, BobC. What you have been doing until now, finding workarounds and getting things done to make a change, is more important than spending so much time building something perfect from scratch. In most cases, one gets frustrated and abandons the project altogether. But I am no one to tell you what to do.
Many enjoy the fruits of your work without even knowing. The wingrid fixes, the new and old icewm changes… Things in life are not perfect, but thanks to some “life hacks”, they are easier to handle.
If you are not going to enjoy the process of learning a complicated language like C++, you can start with workarounds to edit files with bash and create simple interfaces with yad, but try think no one is imposing this on you (not even yourself), so you can do other things that you enjoy instead. Most of us in life don’t get to be experts, but life is still giving us enough things to handle with many different skillsets, even if we are not masters.
But as I say, I am no one to tell you what to do.antiX Live system enthusiast.

::Hey BobC just wanted to send you a thank you for a lot of the work you have added to icewm.
Big fan of icewm and find these kind of improvements helpful as I have little or no progaming ability.

::Hi,
relatively new to antiX and therefore cannot fully judge your contributions.
Still, thanks for them!I had a goal to learn C as well.
I’ve discovered Python and did not have/create much time since to learn anything new (apart from refreshing Matlab and exploring BASH further).
A lot of things can be done with Python (though not altering C-code) and it is relatively easy to use.Anyway, do whatever makes you happy!
It is your life and your time to fill/spend.And good luck.

::When I’m learning new things I need to start small and simple, and work my way up to the larger, more complex tasks, or I get lost in too many details and problems about things I know nothing about. The code isn’t written with the idea that it is there to teach, so that doesn’t help matters. I maybe will take a break and try again someday. I’ve tried 3 times now, but maybe not long/hard enough.

::Regarding learning either C or C++ there are probably still a few expensive courses available, though I doubt that any live, in person ones are being offered now. Way back in 1982 when I began to actively use and learn UNIX, AT&T had an on site C course in New Jersey at a location that offered classes to customers. Later the same year NCR had classroom instruction with labs with UNIX. By then I had working experience with both but the class and labs with other students further added to my personal experience and led to a career in UNIX and Linux software.
Since classes are so rare, I recommend looking in a bookstore for books on whatever languages or systems you want to explore. I happened to visit a Barnes and Noble bookstore recently and they have quite a few technology books available for many subjects including programming.
If that’s not possible, perhaps either a used book or an online class or book may be available. If I find anything else I will mention it.

I just want you to know I greatly appreciate your help with making IceWM work for me nicely at the end… With custom theme I was able to put together from individual pieces it looks pretty good now and this ‘optimal’ composition should last me a long time now…

Myself now, when I have more time I am considering attempting to learn some languages too, not computer related though:…
– Greek – was too busy to progress a lot in the past
– German – to further enhance current (limited) knowledge
– Lithuanian – The oldest Indo-european language, preceding all other European languages…Thanks again and Best Regards…

::I’m happy to hear people are happy with the things I’ve been involved in.
That does make me feel good about putting the effort into them.
In many cases, I use those problems, and the solutions for them, to improve what I have on my systems, and if if I can help make it possible, what is built into the distro, so that everyone benefits.

::I have slowed down also. Just the natural order of things. My motorcycles keep me busy.
My how to’s only deal with stuff I learn. With some southern lingo thrown in for good measure.
Just got offline with Rose at MX forum. Seems a think tank thread I got working in AntiX back in 2011 has gotten a response today.
Hi Rok,
I may or may not have been the Mepis user that was attempting to get Bravetree’s Think Tanks 32 bit tank game working in Mepis years ago.
Now I have a newly installed MX OS and am trying to get that very same game to run on MX. I can get it to open and run in “solo” offline mode fine.
But as soon as I try to connect to a game server the game immediately crashes and closes. Any ideas?
Thanks in Advance,
