Today I was aproached by a group of IT collegues. They were standing around my desk asking why I am using a 2010 netbook as a work computer. I work freelance at a fairly modest salary. I told them jokingly I am a proud member of the 32-bit era and I use Antix.
Then one of them told me; Oh so you don’t know how to really install a real linux distro. I say what? he said, The right way is to install debian, where those wannabee packages are based on anyway, and to properly set up a window manager or desktop.
I was baffled and I didn’t really know how to reply. The best I could come up with was to say that Antix is a really good community and people help eachother out. They told me; I am sure they are fristi suckers too that are still thinking 32 bit is the latest shit. Everybody was laughing so so hard
Would you be able to be so kind to give me some ammo next time they come to atack me on Debian vs Antix? So I can baffle them on why Antix is better then debian + wm?
Thanks a lot

::Me, I would ignore them. If you like antiX, then use it. If they don’t like antiX, then they don’t have to use it.
But I would say that antiX is not just for 32-bit computers. It works great on my 64-bit computers as well.

::They seem like bullies. I think that, so long as they believe they are hurting you (emotionally/mentally), they will continue doing the same.
Just smile & act like it doesn’t bother you in the least bit.
Just like an internet troll, they get satisfaction from your dismay. Laugh & say “good one!”
But keep drinking what you like, etc., & let them go away.confirmed antiX frugaler, since 2019

::I’ve run into various “bullies” during the course of my life. Nobody in technology can intimidate me though because I’ve been an astute reader all of my life. No, I haven’t read about everything, nor have I done everything or used everything. As I grew from youth in technology to a veteran of technology and finally to a senior in technology, and now a retiree who has seen a lot, what is common is that things change.
In my final years as a software test engineer, I’d look for sharp people who were both intelligent and quick. The really smart ones would listen to “oldies” like me, and I’d most certainly listen to them; we both had valuable things to share. Sometimes I’d see that a “new” method was a clear and useful improvement over a classic method; other times the “tried and true” techniques were still the best.
The most helpful situations were when I could convince my younger associates that the best thing to do was first learn something that works, then look for consistent things that could be repeated; when repetition is possible, reuse is possible – and OPTIMAL. Once repetition and automation are possible, the next choices to make are to choose the appropriate tools for replicating tests, and that greatly depends on WHAT is being tested.
When I’ve created automation test harnesses, this much I can suggest: a shell script, typically a Bash shell script, can be used as a starting point for the test. In some cases, the entire test can be conducted from Bash, but as we also know, Bash is interpretive, so it is NOT the best tool for everything, but it CAN be started either interactively or in a job that can be scheduled through cron, anacron, “at”, or simply backgrounded, and you can run a series of one, ten, or hundreds of test steps or test scenarios from a single test harness.
In one test harness I was involved with, we performed file system tests, multiprocessor tests, mathematical tests, etc. Some programs, I was happy to see, were FORTRAN programs because of their mathematical roots; I liked that because my initial interests in computers and software came from a mathematics teacher in Algebra and Trigonometry, and even though I rarely use them, it brings back fond memories.
Anyway, those who bother and pester each other should be ashamed of themselves. Young people have many wonderful ideas and they bring great energy. Similarly old people bring experience and a lot of history. Even old windbags like me have something to share; let’s make the best of what each one of us can offer and stop being critical about minor things. The young should appreciate what the old can share and the old should be proud of what our future leaders bring to us; when we learn from one another and care for each other, it is the best thing possible!

Konstantina, there are several possible answers to this, you will need to choose the right answer for the right taunt.
1-The antiX is free from SystemD.
2-The antiX is designed to consume the least possible amount of computer resources (I understand this as processing and RAM memory).
3-An old computer that is working, with a 32-bit processor and only 1 GB of RAM memory is considered electronic waste and has suffered the effects of “planned obsolescence” by large corporations. I have two options, use this computer with antiX Linux or throw it in the trash.
4-Although antiX is based on stable Debian, we can use antiX with many programs that are not in official Debian repositories.
5-The antiX community is the best, because… (you fill in the answer you wrote in your text) and there is no other like it.
6-With antiX Linux it is possible to revive old computers that are not suitable for current Windows, it is possible to watch television channels, watch YouTube videos without advertisements, access my emails, produce texts and spreadsheets, play games electronics, etc., even on an old computer. Are you going to get rid of your old computer by any chance?
7-If your old computer is worthless to you, with antiX your old computer is worth a lot to me.
8-I use antiX because I am free to choose what I want for myself and what is best for me and you have nothing to meddle with my life or with the operating system I use on my computer. (Maybe you have to clench your fists or start running… lots of laughter)
9-Invent your powerful phrase to justify your reasons for using antiX Linux. The creator of antiX wrote (December 1, 2020):
We will try to keep CPU and RAM usage at idle down to a minimum. We mainly achieve this through not running unnecessary services on boot.In June 2023 I will complete 3 years participating in this community and I am sure of one thing, if I read your topic 3 years from now, I will have many sentences much better than these. And there’s another important thing, the people in this community welcomed me here very well, even though I don’t know how to write or read in English.

1-O antiX é livre do SystemD.
5-A comunidade do antiX é a melhor, porque…
The creator of antiX wrote (December 1, 2020):
We will try to keep CPU and RAM usage at idle down to a minimum. We mainly achieve this through not running unnecessary services on boot.

::Another set of very well thought out comments and responses. Thank you for your insights and explanations.
Regarding #8, I hope that it is never necessary to practice any behavior that leads to hostility in any way,
though using software the way we use it is certainly NOT the status quo.How about this response?
I care about the earth, the environment, my community and the well being of those around me. By making the best possible use of potentially toxic electronic components, I’m ensuring their effective utilization for as long as possible, and in the meantime, I am seeking to learn and apply as many conservation techniques as possible, including the research and reuse of electronic parts when they do finally reach their end of usable life. Meanwhile, low end 64-bit and past prime 32-bit systems that function are keeping away from toxic waste dumps?
I hope that at the appropriate time you and others will join in preserving or reusing potentially toxic electronic components.

Why is being a snob funny? It is like making fun of a 4 cylinder vehicle versus 6 cylinders or hamburger versus steak or.. I can go but it just senseless and snobbery (assuming they were serious).
Truthfully, I installed Linux on all my old 32 bit computers and gave them away to less fortunate people. The fact that I could install antiX mean that they didn’t get tossed in the landfill and people can use them. Also, I use antiX on 64 bit machines for the reasons given by the others.
snobs or bullies, smile and let them see you using antiX. One of the group may came forward and ask questions to learn not poke fun.

::The way I see it, AntiX and Debian are practically the same thing. That is, AntiX shouldn’t be considered a distro merely based on Debian; it is Debian, with perhaps a few modifications (the most major one being the avoidance of systemd.) For example, when search-engine-troubleshooting (looking for which packages install what functionality, etc.), I always look for Debian answers. This is perhaps because, in the end, AntiX (for the most part, and in every way that counts) uses the Debian repos.
I always tend to go with AntiX, simply because the install size is way smaller, and the install procedure actually less complicated than vanilla Debian. The various USB/frugal install options are fun to use, and the full version offers a smart selection of software, though I sometimes find aspects of the GUI setups to be a bit obtrusive (hence I often go for core installs).
For example, I use Emacs as my text editor. Some plugins bind the Control+Alt+arrow-keys to certain editing functions. However, AntiX-full IceWM will intercept these bindings, and I’ve found it a pain to have to hunt these down and change them whenever they appear. (And forget about XFCE!) At least Fluxbox (especially when it’s vanilla-installed from Debian) makes it easy to edit the one keys file, and comment out the offending window-manager bindings.
In short, AntiX hits a sweet spot between “just works” and “power user”. It avoids the former enough to be speedy, efficient, and helpful, and the latter enough to avoid throwing the user down fastidious rabbit holes (if the user doesn’t happen to like those).
The comments made by those coworkers strike me as even being a bit ironic, since AntiX in some respects probably requires (a bit) more skill than a “real Linux distro.” My response would’ve been, “This is a real Linux distro; it uses the same package repos as Debian, but without the bloat.”

::Regarding keystroke settings, JWM, IceWM, Fluxbox, and for that matter, most any window manager, can be configured by text editable configuration files.
For IceWM in particular, cd .icewm, then examine keys, preferences and prefoverride. Any key bindings can be either changed or removed.
After removal, if there is still a conflict, then assigning the particular keystroke with conflicting values can be set with an empty value and that should take care of it once IceWM is restarted. If that doesn’t work, let us know, and share the contents of these files with us. Thanks.

::antiX does a really nice setup of icewm. Installing vanilla icewm from debian looks nothing like antix, and has nowhere near the same functionality.

But if those people say what they want to Konstantina, they can hear what they don’t want to.
The impression I had was that Konstantina was harassed by those human beings.
I say one thing, a Brazilian man or woman would never talk to me the way those people talk to Konstantina, if he said that to me he would hear a few good things from me and they would never talk to me that way again.
If those people don’t respect Konstantina, they certainly don’t respect the other workers.
My suggestion is to stay as far away from those people as possible and not waste time with explanations about antiX or any other GNU/Linux.– – – – –

April 8, 2023 at 7:29 pm #104412ModeratorBobC
::Setup a flashdrive boot from whatever version of Debian they were suggesting on it and get a stopwatch. Use the stopwatch to perform the exact same set of normal tasks starting from a cold boot on Debian first, and then do it again on an antiX flashdrive. Write down the timings for each as you get to checkpoints, like boot to login, login to desktop, open broswer load Debian website, copy image and save it. Open in image editor and add text, then save. Load office, paste in image, go to browser, copy text, paste into document, save. Go to email, email document. Close all and shutdown.
I am going to guess that you can do it in One third less time using antiX as compared to Debian. Ask them how to fix it.
That should end the smack talk.
PS: if you time the tests ahead of time (never bet on anything you aren’t sure of), you could bet them one of their old 64 bit laptops for free if antiX wins (I would guess one of them has one) on the results vs paying a reasonable price for that same laptop. In other words you either win it from them or buy it from them. antiX will speed up a 64 bit machine, and even the 32 bit software version you have would run on it with minimal changes.

::At least they are found of installing their own minimal Linux(but then, why not Arch or LFS?). At my job I’m often subject of jokes and pesting, not only because I’m using Devuan, but because I’m not using m$ ‘like everybody’. The worst is that my bosses have planned to force me to force me using m$ in a few months, so if I can’t find another job in the public sector(where I am for years) I would be forced to resign, witch could lead me to endless problems…

When I used to work, I’d use whatever I was provided. My skill-set and my resume did, on multiple occasions, lead me to work where I’d be testing on either UNIX or Linux servers, but the only jobs where I got UNIX or Linux workstations was in places where I was actually IN a UNIX or Linux organization, and those were my favorite jobs.
However, all of them are still “work”, and as tempting as it is to experiment, it’s important to work on what we’ve been hired to do. I have my Linux systems at home so I can always do what I want there. Now that I’m retired, that’s most, if not all of the time!
