I made some changes in Nvidia configuration tool to eliminate screen tearing, checked 2 boxes, but the settings won’t survive reboot.
I tried all those recommendations like creating a conf file, renaming it to 20-nvidia.conf, etc., in best case it partially worked, the desktop did not load – I guess no X loaded, but the NV settings persisted ) but this is rather a thorny way of booting, always requiring to enter tty 1,2, 3.., etc until the desktop is loaded.. all done under root. Please help.

Since one can only assume that you talk about the changes for “ForceFullCompositionPipeline”,
there’s also the possibility to add a line to the startup-file under
control centre > session > User Desktop-Session > startup -tab
like this
nvidia-settings --assign CurrentMetaMode="nvidia-auto-select +0+0 { ForceFullCompositionPipeline = On }"
