I noticed connman available in AntiX19. Alone it doesnt support 3G cell phone tethering, but supposedly with oFono added as a plugin, it has this ability. Not sure it would be added to the gui. Probably have to make a script or manually run from terminal. I noticed there is a terminal option for connmand to add a plugin, but how to give it other info not super sure. It will need my device /dev/ttyACM0 but also APN. No idea if it will insist on me declaring a username and password though those arent needed. And in my instance neither is a SIM pin number.

Just checking if anybody has done this and wouldnt mind explaining how they did it, save me some looking. I know I can tether via ppp, or wvdial, or gnome-ppp, using gnome-ppp right now, but from what I have read connman with ofono may do it bit more efficiently. Unfortunately most of reading is from people trying to use it with embedded system. And their chatter is not newbie friendly.

Ok, found this which is at last in more common speak english. http://www.ubuntugeek.com/connection-manager-connman-managing-internet-connections-in-linux.html

        3G modems

For 3G modems a separate package ofono is needed. Also it’s a good idea to install use-modeswitch also.

        1. Install ofono:

        sudo apt-get install ofono

        2. Install usb-modeswitch:

        sudo apt-get install usb-modeswitch

        3. Plug in the modem and wait for the initialisation to finish

        4. Check that cellular network is found:

        cmcc list

        5. Edit APN for the connection (usually it’s “internet”, but depends on the operator):

        cmcc edit apn

        6. Start connection normally using the NetworkMenu

        not sure what cmcc is.

          From http://www.ubuntugeek.com/connection-manager-connman-managing-internet-connections-in-linux.html
          Using Connman
ConnMan can be used in two different ways, either with Network Menu found from the panel or via a command-line tool called cmcc , both are in indicator-network package.

indicator-network package is only available in ubuntu (no debian package), but I think it is dead. You do not need cmcc to run connman with ofono.

I cannot test it out, as I have no 3G USB modem, but at least it seems that, after you install ofono, restart connman (sudo service connman restart) and, in the connman gui, you should be able to see a new Tethering or 3G or ofono option. If it doesn’t appear, try un-plugin and re-plugging the 3g modem.
If nothing works, you could try reading connman man page, ofono man page.

This guy says (2018) that once ofone is running, when connecting the 3g modem, connman auto-connects. So, for you, it should be extremely easy if what this person says is true.

Ok, but without cmcc not sure how to add the APN. It isnt going to tether without correct APN for my cell network. But looks like have more searching and reading to do. By way I did open connman and it apparently saw the phone as it let me click to try tethering. But without an APN, it cant tether. And of course no silly experiment without a suitable punishment. I can now no longer use AntiX cause whatever happened, it hosed the ability to involve the DNS server for gnome-ppp. Oh I can ping numerical address, but cant resolve names. During gnome-ppp connection it finds the cell network DNS servers (they lock out any but their own), just cant use them. I can see what gnome-ppp does cause I have to start it from root terminal. Shows in terminal what its doing.

For stopping connman and ofono, in terminal

              sudo service connman stop
              sudo service ofono stop

That should stop connman and maybe “release” it’s claws on the mobile connection.

I have found something that may help you set the APN in ofono. It is for a non-debian based distribution, and it is setting more than the internet connection, but the process may help you find a path for what you are looking for:

Hope this helps more than break stuff. My previous tries were more harmful than good.
