      Hi, all!

I was just messing about with the Clipit clipboard manager. I was trying to set the hotkey in Clipit for bringing up the clipboard history to <Shift><Ctrl>H, because the <Alt><Ctrl>H just hides the IceWM panel. Well, it didn’t work. So, I rebooted the computer.

But then there is no sound icon on the bar, AND the computer can’t seem to connect to the etherntet modem, which is plugged into it. Nothing wrong with the modem itself, though. And when I try to reset the sound card; nothing. It always worked before.

Any idea if there’s a quick fix to this? Or should I just reinstall antiX after backing up all my data and such?

And is using Clipit not such a hot idea and/or is there a better clipboard manager to use for antiX? I do a lot of cut and paste editing, which is the main reason I like having a clipboard manager with a history thingy…

I’ve had no hardware issues like this so far with antiX since installing it on my ageing desktop a couple of months ago. I updated the kernel to the latest version, but without any issues until this happened.

      Thanks in advance…

Show us your latest apt history? That might help us.
What happens if you login to a different window manager?

We don’t know what version of antix you are using or your hardware.

First, try changing to a different Desktop Session first. Menu > Desktops > Other Desktops Space-jwm for example, and see if the volume icon and wireless pop up. What program were you using to connect to the router (connman, ceni, wicd, other…).

Check if teh audio works with
          aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

          Edit: Ninja’d. Don’t mind me.

            Hi Again, anticapitalista and Xecure!

(Xecure, I’ve answered part of your question below:

@ anticapitalista: I seem to have the ethernet connection back, although all I did was shut down the computer for several minutes while doing some studying working on my laptop. (Laptop is running on Linux Mint Xfce 20)…

Here is the copy of the history.log file (I’ve logged in and out and rebooted earlier hoping that make the problem go away):

@ Xecure:I’ve not tried that sound file yet, but will in a minute; I’m trying to juggle a few things at the same time.
BUT: there is no master volume button on the Space IceWM session, but it is on the taskbars of both Space Fluxbox and Space JWM.
The regular sound test does application not work in any of the desktops at the moment.

              Hi again Xecure:

We don’t know what version of antix you are using or your hardware.

First, try changing to a different Desktop Session first. Menu > Desktops > Other Desktops Space-jwm for example, and see if the volume icon and wireless pop up. What program were you using to connect to the router (connman, ceni, wicd, other…).

Check if teh audio works with
              aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

We don’t know what version of antix you are using or your hardware.

First, try changing to a different Desktop Session first. Menu > Desktops > Other Desktops Space-jwm for example, and see if the volume icon and wireless pop up. What program were you using to connect to the router (connman, ceni, wicd, other…).

Check if teh audio works with

Okay, I’m using antiX 19.2; installed it a couple of months ago…
              aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
That did nothing, not a peep out of the speakers…

                Additional:

                Sorry for being a pest.

I was trying to flip through different desktops again. Plain old IceWM did have the master sound control icon. I switched back to Space IceWM and now the master sound icon is back there. That’s progress, a bit, I think.

Still no sound out of the speakers, though…

For the speaker problem, see the mini guide I created some time ago:
                  https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/fresh-install-no-sound-antix-19-2/#post-36314

First make sure the audio card is not muted, as suggested by anticapitalista in the same tread:

Check that sound is not muted (no M) via Contol Centre > Hardware > Adjust MIxer

The first 3 steps should be enough:

                  […]
                  1. Making sure your audio is not muted.
Go to Control Centre > Hardware > Adjust Mixer
Make sure non of the options are muted (you should see a MM instead of 00 under any of the bars if it is muted. If it is muted, hit M key to unmute).

                  2. Restore ALSA configuration and rescan the soundcards.
                  alsactl nrestore
Sometimes the problems can easily be solved by restoring the ALSA configuration and rescanning the soundcards.

                  3. Test with XMMS to check if it is related to the Alsa card chooser program or the driver (you will need a song or any audio file for testing the audio on XMMS). Open XMMS, right-click anywhere, go to Options > Preferences. There, at the bottom of the new window, you should see “ALSA 1.2.11 output plugin” for Output Plugin. Hit configure and select the correct audio device. Remember what you saw in step 0, as you will have to select the correct audio device based on what you are using (after selecting, check the value for hw:X,Y where X is the card and Y is the audio device, comparing to what you saw in aplay -l output). Hit OK and test the audio by playing something with XMMS.

3.1. If XMMS had audio playing correctly, manually set the audio device for ALSA in /etc/asound.conf
Open the asound.conf file with your preferred text editor with root privileges. Example with geany:
                  sudo geany /etc/asound.conf
Knowing the card and device that worked on XMMS, edit these lines:

                  # ***** Defaults *******************************************************

                  # Audio card/chip and device to use and control
                  # In most cases these settings should remain commented (#)
                  # When commented, card and device 0 are usually automatically selected
                  # When uncommented, the item corresponding to the number is selected
                  #defaults.pcm.card 0
                  #defaults.pcm.device 0
                  #defaults.ctl.card 0

Uncommenting the default.* lines and changing the values to the correct card and device values that worked on XMMS. For example, hw:1,2 would mean Card 1 Device 2. the result would be:

                  # Audio card/chip and device to use and control
                  # In most cases these settings should remain commented (#)
                  # When commented, card and device 0 are usually automatically selected
                  # When uncommented, the item corresponding to the number is selected
                  defaults.pcm.card 1
                  defaults.pcm.device 2
                  defaults.ctl.card 1

                  Save the file.
A reboot may be in order. This should solve the problems if you got audio to work on XMMS, now it should work on all the system. If it doesn’t, restore /etc/asound.conf to default values.

                    Hi there, Xecure (again)

Well, it was an easy fix! Several things in Alsa mix were set to MM (muted).

No idea why, though. I didn’t adjust anything there before this problem cropped up.

Anyway, I’ve got sound! Hooray! So I can listen to my tunes and CBC radio shows again!

Any hotkeys from the DE that might have muted my speakers? I must have done something like that somehow…

Anyway, thanks for the easy fix tip on the mute thing. Much appreciated!

                        Hi again, Xecure:

I’m glad it was an easy fix too. A reinstall would’ve been a time consuming pain.

I’ll check that keys file to see how I may have accidentally muted my speakers.

Thanks for your time and help!
