Hi.
I recently installed AntiX 21 on a new laptop. It came with Windows, and I checked it out before replacing with AntiX. In Windows the sound worked fine using the onboard sound.
The sound does not work under AntiX, the onboard sound is simply not detected as an option, only HDMI.
I tried installing Pulse audio but that didn’t help.
I have read every link that I could find, and tried the solutions (including https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Advanced_Linux_Sound_Architecture/Troubleshooting#No_sound_with_onboard_Intel_sound_card) but nothing seems to help.
What else should I try and what other information should I add here to help find out what the problem is?

::Hello kpollock.
Welcome to antiX Linux and the forum.
I don’t know how to write in English and I send my texts translated by the internet translator. I hope you can understand everything, if your native language is not English, please translate my original Brazilian Portuguese text directly into your language with the help of internet translators.
Regardless of your level of knowledge about GNU/Linux, I recommend you read these excellent tutorials created by @PPC:
What is antiX and how to try it out or install it.
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie.
How-to install applications – 2020 version.
How to: correctly use antiX forum.When I first started using antiX, I read the tutorials that PPC created, these readings saved me a lot of time and I think it saves time for any new antiX user. Your time will not be wasted with these readings, everything will seem to be much easier than you could imagine. You won’t waste your time searching the internet or even creating new topics, on the contrary, you will gain a lot of time with these readings.
I recommend you try out desktops that have “zzz” in their name. I usually use zzz-IceWM or zzz-JWM or zzz-Fluxbox (each of these desktops has its own characteristics and consumes more or less resources), zzzFM will be the default file manager for your desktop, it it is very similar to the other file managers of other GNU/Linux distributions and Windows XP. To access other antiX workspaces, click on Menu, Desktop, Other Desktops and click on the workspace name, instantly the workspace will be loaded.
Whenever you need to ask for help or technical support in this forum, please explain in detail what is happening, don’t mince words, be thorough when writing, tell your computer characteristics such as make and model. If possible, post the result of the command $ inxi -Fxz from the terminal, copy and paste here in the message of the topic that you are going to create in this forum.
When you start a topic or participate with a post, remember to check the option “Notify me of follow-up replies via email”, by checking this option, you will receive a message in your email box whenever there are replies from topic in question.
What else should I try and what other information should I add here to help find out what the problem is?
Now can you understand why I get all new users with this text above?

Try the following sequence: click on the antiX menu, Applications, Multimedia, AlsaMixer, press the F6 key and select your sound card. If it doesn’t work with this option, try to find the Sound Card Selector option in the menus.

What is antiX and how to try it out or install it.
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie.
How-to install applications – 2020 version.
How to: correctly use antiX forum.
What else should I try and what other information should I add here to help find out what the problem is?
Agora você consegue compreender porque eu recebo todos os novos usuários com este texto acima?

::Thank you very much marcelocripe. Those links look useful, even if I have already used AntiX on 3 machines already (and been very happy).
The only options shown in the AlsaMixer are – default, 0 HDA Intel PCH, and 1 USB Camera. Default is Pulse Audio but it is not started as you can see below. I took it out of the startup to rule it out as a possible source of the problem.
There is simply no Analog device listed where I think there should be.

::Default is Pulse Audio but it is not started as you can see below.
I took it out of the startup to rule it out as a possible source of the problem.If pulse is default but not running you can not expect sound to work.
There is a long recent thread on getting sound working.
Gist is to get rid of pulse completely, set default sound device, ensure alsamixer is not muted.
Usualy the control center application is enough to get sound setup with alsa. Did you try it ?.

::Moddit – in the AlsaMixer, I am using the option to select the soundcard. So I would expect that I could change the selected sound card to the onboard analogue sound – but the option is not listed. Only the HDMI option. This leads me to believe that the onboard analog sound is somehow not detected by the OS. Which suggests to me that there is a more fundamental issue with detecting it.
Analog audio is not listed in pavucontrol either, when Pulse is running.
No, the sound didn’t work before I installed pulse audio. it DID work under Windows before I replaced it with AntiX.
I tried the Control Centre – if I remember rightly I could not access the sound card selection there and got an error. Let me check and get back to you.
I am happy to remove Pulse Audio, I’m not sure of the foolproof way to do so completely, but I can look it up and try 🙂

The topic that ModdIt must have referred to is Pipewire to manage audio in antiX 21.
Don’t forget to check in the BIOS whether the sound card is active or not.
You can also test with a LiveUSB if the audio works on antiX 19.5 or antiX 21 with “legacy kernel” or if the audio works with Kernel 5.10.142 on antiX 21.
If you manage to solve your problem, remember to describe the solution here, so this thread can help others.– – – – –

September 17, 2022 at 8:25 am #89180MemberModdIt
::Hi all,
Long thread is https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/alsa-and-hda-nvidia-guidance/Sound setup with alsa is highly condensed howto.
Please do not let the title of the long thread fool you, it contains or points to a lot of
useful information on getting sound working with alsa.I have never needed or used pipewire, pulse, a layer depending on alsa degrades sound so
I never use that either.Remove pulse with apt is easy: please do read how to remove or install packages, it is
very useful knowledge.I could just post a line to copy in to the terminal, choose not to do so, I assure you
familiarity with apt commands will be very useful to you now and in the future :-).

::Thx for link!
You are right, command stuff plus learning to look stuff up is a super useful skill.
I’m totally familiar with the command line – I’m actually a nodejs developer ;-). I’ve just sometimes had apt not remove everything – but maybe that’s been down to me forgetting the complete set of packages I’ve installed!

::You are right , only HDMI devices are listed and the analog device is missing in aplay -l
We might find more information with
lspci | grep -i audioThis is kind of new and not everyday hardware, if you are lucky the installation of firmware-sof-signed will help.

Might a newer kernel is needed.October 3, 2022 at 2:35 pm #90110Memberkpollock
::lspci | grep -i audio

An onboard sound card is not “everyday hardware”? Every laptop I have had for 10 years has had onboard sound and video, never seperate cards!

::ok, so what is
firmware-sof-signedexactly, and what are the risks associated with installing it? Even its GitHub page is not enlightening, though it does seem to at least indicate how to install it. Sometimes I despair of my fellow developer brethren. It isn’t cool or clever to miss out the basics. It isn’t just for noobs, but a courtesy to one’s peer with perhaps no experience in this particular area and not got hours and days to go investigating.I do despair sometimes, getting sound out of a PC these days should not be a trial, it should “just work”. Especially since I know the hardware does work with another O/S.

::https://debian.pkgs.org/11/debian-nonfree-amd64/firmware-sof-signed_1.7-1_all.deb.html Seems to give the clearest installation instructions. I have no idea why this reply seems to keep getting rejected as spam but hopefully if I type a bigger message, it might get through and be perhaps helpful to anyone following in my footsteps.

::It might help to just say what SOF stands for! 🙂
In any case, for those e hoping for a solution, installing it made no difference. But I am not sure if I might need to do some setup, the readme didn’t say.
On the broader topic, I agree that hardware and software should be as independent of each other as possible, whilst acknowledging that there might be some practical difficulties. As a software professional, I am not averse to paying for software :-). But often one does not even get the option. There should also be free alternatives for those who can’t afford it – but I stress ALTERNATIVES – I don’t support (all) outright piracy. YMMV.

::So, looking up “Intel Corporation Celeron/Pentium Silver Processor High Definition Audio” gets me to https://linux-hardware.org/?id=pci:8086-3198-1c6c-122a
The device is supported by kernel versions 4.11 and newer according to the LKDDband
$ uname -r 5.10.57-antix.1-amd64-smpI would assume “support” to include Analog output support. But I am not having much luck. I could not see anything obvious in the BIOS either, but it isn’t the first time for me that things have checked out in the BIOS and not worked under Linux (specifically AntiX)
