This is just a question, not a problem. I posted some time ago in different words but apparently it missed attention…
My environment is antiX 19.2 Hannie Schaft fully updated, kernel 4.19, but it was happening for some time across antiX 19. Desktop: Space-Fluxbox. Running Live USB instance if it matters on various laptops: Thinkpads X61, T410, X220, T520. Most frequently used on X61.
My observation is that sometimes antiX boots to Space-Fluxbox without the usual two icons in the top left corner. these icons, standard for antiX are file Manager and Help.
This erratic behavior with missing desktop icons results in significant savings of memory used, reduced on my X61 laptops from 188M with icons to 143M when it happens to boot without.
This might be a trivial reduction to most users, but in my attempt to maximize optimization of antiX it is significant, particularly that I can always start File Manager from the menu whenever I need one, so no functionality is lost if it boots without these two icons…
My question to antiX team is: How can I make it permanent that antiX would boot with no desktop icons to save such significant amount of memory?Live antiX Boot Options (Previously posted by Xecure):

::I am not a Fluxbox user, but I think what is happening is that you are running Rox-Fluxbox or SpaceFM-Fluxbox, and those use more memory than the other Fluxbox options.
What you want to do run either Min-Fluxbox or Minimal-Fluxbox.
I’m not exactly sure how to save that setting as I’m testing from a flashdrive. I would expect it to save when installed.

::Thank you BobC and anti for recommendations. Yes, I had already experienced previously that Fluxbox or Minimal Fluxbox result in lower memory use. But I am not getting SpaceFM this way as File Manager. File Manager that starts from the menu is much inferior ‘Rox Filer’, something like that.
My point I was trying to describe is that on booting Space Fluxbox as my default desktop I am getting SpaceFM file manager, regardless whether the two icons appear on the desktop or they do not. If they do not, which happens often for me, the file manager (started from menu) is still SpaceFM and Conky still shows Space-Fluxbox. The only difference for me is no icons on desktop. As I mentioned, on my X61 Thinkpads this is a quite significant memory optimization opportunity if antiX 19.2 is initially using 146M instead of about 188M, without losing anything in terms of desktop quality except icons.
For someone who does not care about icons on the desktop this behavior seems rather significant memory saving, without sacrificing SpaceFM as File Manager. If I only know how to make it happen on permanent basis, so it always boots like this, this would great to realize this optimization opportunity…
This is not that my laptops are lacking memory, so such 40-50M memory use reduction will make these laptops run faster, but it is a matter of elegance and efficiency that antiX memory use can be reduced with such setting by rather significant proportion.
So my question to antiX team: What is controlling whether these two desktop icons appear on desktop and how can I make them not appear (as it happens to me erratically) on permanent basis, without switching from Space-Fluxbox to Fluxbox and losing SpaceFM in such process?
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated…Live antiX Boot Options (Previously posted by Xecure):

::Use Preferred Applications – File Manager – spacefm.desktop in Control Centre if you want Minimal-fluxbox or fluxbox.

::As anticapitalista has explained, you can:
A. Use session “fluxbox” and set your File Manager using “Preferred Applications”
1. Launch “fluxbox” session.
2. Go to Control center > Desktop > Preferred Applications > File Manager (and search for spacefm-folder-handler.desktop, located in /usr/share/applications), then click OK.
(You may have to set wallpaper if there is non).B. Stop SpaceFM from launching the desktop when using “space-fluxbox” session.
1. Edit ~/.fluxbox/startup
2. Add a line to stop SpaceFM desktop to start#Stop all spaceFM processes killall spacefmThe best option is using A, in my opinion.

::Thank you BobC, anti and Xecure for the tips. It appears that running Fluxbox instead of Space-Fluxbox but setting File Manager default as SpaceFM did the trick. No icons on desktop and memory use is much lower as expected. Greatly appreciated!
So the only difference between Space-Fluxbox and Fluxbox are that icons are implemented on desktop, not that SpaceFM is the File Manager, as I incorrectly inferred from naming convention?

::The default file-manager does depend on the ‘desktop’ used, so rox-fluxbox (or rox-icewm, rox-jwm) default to rox-filer and space-fluxbox (or space-icewm, space-jwm) default to spacefm.
All other options (Minimal or ‘plain’ window-manager) default to rox-filer.- This reply was modified 3 years ago by anticapitalista.

Thanks again Xecure for these detailed options. Particularly pointing me to spacefm-folder-handler.desktop as the one to specify…
My antiX is getting close to perfection now…The default file-manager does depend on the ‘desktop’ used, so rox-fluxbox (or rox-icewm, rox-jwm) default to rox-filer and space-fluxbox (or space-icewm, space-jwm) default to spacefm.
All other options (Minimal or ‘plain’ window-manager) default to rox-filer.Understood…
Thanks again for this guidance. Coupling Fluxbox and SpaceFM instead of default Fluxbox+RoxFiler gives me better memory optimization and enhanced elegance (no icons) than using Space-Fluxbox… No functionality lost this way…Live antiX Boot Options (Previously posted by Xecure):

::What are the min- options?
If you meant to point me to that paragraph I do understand that memory used by antiX can be further minimized by resorting to those drastic minimal options. This is not my intent however to sacrifice functionality and looks for shaving additional RAM. My intent was specifically to reduce memory use while retaining all functionality, user experience and elegance of interface.
Thanks to very helpful suggestions of antiX team (Xecure provided details) this has been accomplished through replacing Space-Fluxbox desktop with Fluxbox coupled with SpaceFM as default File Manager. This results in only losing icons. Coupling of Fluxbox with SpaceFM as default File Manager instead of Space-Fluxbox resulted in reduction of initial memory use by over 40M in my fully loaded setting.
So, to be clear, it is not a necessity for me to minimize memory use because of minimal hardware but rather it is a matter of efficiency, dexterity and elegance of antiX, which now seems optimized as much as I could do.Live antiX Boot Options (Previously posted by Xecure):

::If you were using IceWM instead of Fluxbox, on version 19, off the Desktop menu is a Desktop folder, where you can click the icons that are in the desktop folder without needing Rox or SpaceFM running, thus saving the memory. I also prefer SpaceFM over Rox filer, but both are pretty configurable. You must like Fluxbox better though, and that’s ok if you do.
The minimal options don’t load the VolumeIcon or Conky system monitor, and that saves about 10 or 12 mb more. I use the AlsaMixer as an icon on my toolbar, in combination with my Volume keys on the keyboards instead of the VolumeIcon, but I still usually run the Conky on all but my slowest mackines.
