        What are the contents of /usr/share/xsessions?
        Also what does running /usr/local/lib/desktop-session/desktop-session-slim-update -L show?

          That was a transient virtualbox instance, already removed.
          Retested a new 19.3 instance, after having performed dist-upgrade.
          Different result ~~ icewm now available, but the submenu contains duplicate (min, and minimal) entries

            sudo apt install --reinstall desktop-session-antix

            has worked for me on every time I experienced this. For some reason it works after reinstalling desktop-session-antix

            antiX Live system enthusiast.
            General Live Boot Parameters for antiX.

              Okay, that did successfully resolve the issue. However, overnight it occurred to me to check md5sum of the ISO and, yep, md5sum mismatch! It’s embarassing to realize my apparent noobish mistake of not verifying the ISO after download.
