      Hi all,

First, congratulations to all involved in the production of AntiX. It makes my 12 year old laptop run faster than when I bought it.

I have had one issue with this distribution, though, and have searched web forums here and elsewhere without finding anything apposite. This is the problem, which has happened twice over a few months:

      * Package management programs suddenly no longer ask for user (sudo) password when I try to open them. Consequently, via Control Centre or menus, Repo Manager, Package Installer, and Synaptic will not open. If, in Control Centre/Session, I switch to su (root) password, then the first two package managers ask for and accept the su password and open. Synaptic asks for su password but does not open — I read on this forum that was to be expected. (It is possible other programs asking for administrative privileges also do not work with user/sudo password in these circumstances; I did not try them all.) The user/sudo password does work in Terminal and for login etc.

Thus, if I enter the user/sudo password in a Terminal session (say after a ‘sudo apt update’ command), the entire problem can be temporarily remedied, inasmuch as all 3 package managers will then open WITHOUT EVEN ASKING for my user password (presumably this will last until the sudo password delay expires). I did not think to try gksudo.

I have simply reinstalled anti-x to solve this fully, (once a full 19.1 install, this second time an install from a system snapshot, leaving my home directory intact). This works, and is quick, but it seems like overkill.

Any ideas anyone? I am new to Linux (but not to command lines).

Any help would be much appreciated. Of course this not urgent, as all is well for now. Just trying to understand.

Best wishes to all in these sombre times.

      Pepper

For clarification. When you say they no longer ask; do you mean that the window does not appear or that the password is not recognized as correct?

The window does not appear at all.
