Attempting to upgrade ffmpeg & friends from v7:6.0-7 to v7:6.0-9 (or now v7:6.0-9+b1) in testing says that it will remove several core pkgs including vlc, mplayer, geeqie, et. al. Anyone know why? See attached.

::Hi wildstar84,
I see that was using Synaptic.
Does a simulated apt install in the terminal (sudo apt install -s ffmpeg) produce the same output?

::Thanks, @stevesr0 – That was the command I couldn’t remember – I just tried it and here’s what I get:
The following packages have unmet dependencies: ffmpeg : Depends: libavcodec60 (>= 7:6.0) Depends: libavdevice60 (>= 7:6.0) but it is not going to be installed Depends: libavfilter9 (>= 7:6.0) Depends: libavformat60 (>= 7:6.0) spacefm : Depends: libffmpegthumbnailer4v5 (>= 2.2.2+git20220218+dfsg) but it is not going to be installed E: Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages.
Now, digging deeper: (sudo apt install -s libavcodec-extra60) yields (abbreviated to important part):
The following packages will be REMOVED: libavcodec-extra59 libavformat59 libavif15 libsvtav1enc1 The following NEW packages will be installed: libavif16 libdav1d7 libplacebo338 libsvtav1enc1d1 libsystemd0
Note that last one (libsystemd0)!
@anticapitalista – Guess we’re going to soon need a nosystemd vsn, of this too. 🙁

::Attempting to upgrade ffmpeg
Hi, Jim. If memory serves me right, you reported several problems related to updating packages, that no one else has. Like I recently told another user: if I’m the only one that experiences a problem, I can have a very rare problem (in fact I really have a very rare log in problem on the desktop computer I’m using to write this, that no one else ever reported), but it’s much more probable that I’m doing something wrong…

::@PPC – When I report a pbm, and you are observant that most of the few pbms I report are pkg/update related, I do not know when reporting whether or not anyone else is having the same pbm. or not, nor is it relevent as to whether or not I should report it (and I usually wait a week or so before reporting to see if others report or as often happens, it gets resolved before I say anything). If others are affected, then I assume they may reply a “me-too”. Nevertheless, it is my mo. to report pbms (and also solutions, tips, fixes, etc.) I become aware of for the benefit of the community in addition to myself. Likely reasons for “uniqueness” to my reported upgrade issues is that I’m running testing and that it’s been years since I’ve done a full and fresh clean install (which would be very labor-intensive for me as I do run a fairly customized/configured and tight system) and for those reasons tend to be very careful and meticulous when doing package updates, and rarely have any updates cause actual problems or have to be regressed. It is never my intention to “spam” the forums!
Regards,
Jim

::Hi wildstar84,
I also report my apparent misfirings in the upgrade mechanisms. I figure even if only one other has the same problem, it might be helpful to trying to understanding/fixing it.
(Parenthetically, I didn’t interpret PPC’s response as saying don’t post such things. I think his point was that the distro couldn’t be fixed for every single problem an occasional user experiences.)
