So I turned off my PC using the power button in a rush earlier today and when I went to turn it back on just now, it boots into hibernate mode (at least that’s what I’m guessing it is) without ever displaying anything on the screen. It does turn on, but other than the lights on the motherboard fluctuating as they do when the computer is hibernating, nothing happens. So my first thought was obviously to just force a shutdown again and turn it back on. Much to my dismay, it just did the same thing. I tried again and again, with the Restart button as well – it won’t boot properly. Short of resetting the BIOS, which frankly isn’t something I’m in the mood for tonight, I don’t have a lot of ideas. I hope I’m missing something obvious here or someone else has run into this bug in the past and there’s a quick fix. This is a totally normal desktop PC that is neither too old nor too new (Skylake), hardware compatibility shouldn’t be like this. I had no audio until I installed pulseaudio and manually pointed it at the right output. I won’t lie, I’m a little bit upset as my experience has been a lot more frustrating than I anticipated. Regardless, I do appreciate your efforts and I’m just trying to get back into antix.

With nothing to go on, I’d ask the more obvious things:
        Is your monitor turned off?
How are you hibernating? (What software? I don’t recall that option in antiX.)

I wasn’t sure until the last word what you had installed. Which antiX? What model is your computer? Tried a Live USB?

We’re going to need more about your setup before we can be of much help.

            Good advice from seaken64:

            Tried a Live USB?

Turn off. Unplug. Re-plug & reboot. If it will not boot, try a live usb.
If a live usb works but booting from regular hdd install does not, try (from live usb) control centre -> maintenance -> boot repair.
Or perhaps from the main menu -> applications -> antiX -> chroot rescue scan.

Again, nothing to go on; just throwing out some favorite tools to try…

I’m guessing you installed a power manager with hibernate option?

Those programs might also change what the system does when you press the power button or close the lid, etc.

Could you boot to single user command line and remove it?

Good idea from BobC. Use Ctrl-Alt-F1 and see if you can get to a console. If you can get to a console you can fix the system configs and then reboot.

                    Short of resetting the BIOS,
The BIOS is unaffected by Cutting off system power which is what you did, similar to a power outage.
Bios settings are stored in CMOS buffered by the BIOS Battery.

Calling the problem you personaly created an operating system bug is not in the least helpful.

If you have damaged important system Files which is entirely possible the quickest way to safely recover is reinstall
from your latest backup. Failing that if you have a separate home rescue your files with a live system usage
                    then reinstall preserving home.

You may be able to get the system running, trouble may crop up in the future due to bit errors in the system.

Hardware compatibility shouldn’t be like this. I had no audio until I installed pulseaudio and manually pointed it at the right output.

Generaly that is due software compiled to use pulse only, There are for sure a million possible permutations of audio and system hardware
no distro can possibly cover all of them.

For the sake of completeness: a device is not bricked unless non recoverable, at the most the description soft bricked by user would fit to this case.

We dont know what antiX you are running or what else you installed that setup and enabled the hibernation, therefore cannot give an exact answer how to correct or remove it.

Given that, probably the easy answer is to boot from a flashdrive and save your personal files, then reinstall the OS and restore your personal files.

From what I’ve seen, hibernation and resume doesnt just work out of the box on all on all hardware, and that’s why it isn’t enabled in antiX. Suspend and resume is provided and works on the vast majority of systems.

Hi! The problem was indeed related to the HDMI connection to the TV rather than the computer itself. To be honest, I’m not exactly sure what the problem is even now. Choosing the input source on my TV seems to fail sometimes and result in a black screen, but only with the HDMI port I use for the PC. It’s pretty weird. This never happened before. I’ll make a new post below this one if I ever find the root cause, in case it could help somebody in the future. I apologize for the tone of my post, I was in a rotten mood and being unable to use my only computer didn’t help matters. And thanks for trying to help, everybody; I’m not sure I deserved the response I got.

                        Not a good idea

You’re 100% right. Even though I do know this, I forget it too easily whenever this fact is not convenient. I was lucky the issue was not related to system files I had damaged.

We all wish you well, and are trying to help. Nothing would make us happier here than to help see your antiX installation a success.

I keep learning that I need to give a good description of the environment, what is unusual about it, and what things I did, as well as what’s happening that looks wrong in order for anyone to be able to help me 🙂

It sounds like you are making progress. Are you actually hibernating or just suspending?

Maybe try doing everything in a certain sequence with regards to the HDMI screen before booting or resuming. I always connect the cable, turn the TV on and set it to computer, before bringing up the PC.
