Hi everyone, sorry to bother once again but I might have been too cocky believing I could fix the wifi card on my own. This pcmcia wifi card is detected properly and I can connect to a wifi network but when I try to use Dillo or do apt update it doesnt work. I tried to use it closer to the router but makes no difference.
This is a D-Link AirPlus XtremeG DWL-G650 rev. C4 detected properly in device3 as:

      Network:
        Device-1: Intel 82557/8/9/0/1 Ethernet Pro 100
vendor: Acer Incorporated ALI driver: e100 v: 3.5.24-k2-NAPI port: 7000
        bus-ID: 00:0a.0 chip-ID: 8086:1229 class-ID: 0200
IF: eth1 state: down mac: <filter>
Device-2: ULi M7101 Power Management [PMU] vendor: Acer Incorporated ALI
        type: network bridge driver: N/A port: 6050 bus-ID: 00:11.0
        chip-ID: 10b9:7101 class-ID: 0680
Device-3: Qualcomm Atheros AR5212/5213/2414 Wireless Network Adapter
        vendor: D-Link System D-Link AirPlus DWL-G650 driver: ath5k v: kernel
        port: 8000 bus-ID: 06:00.0 chip-ID: 168c:0013 class-ID: 0200
IF: wlan0 state: up mac: <filter>
        IP v4: <filter> scope: global broadcast: <filter>
        IP v6: <filter> scope: link
WAN IP: No WAN IP found. Connected to web? SSL issues? Try enabling dig
      Bluetooth:
        Message: No bluetooth data found.

I tried to look for other posts but most are pretty old (because the card itself is old), some say to install madwifi driver, I looked for that in synaptic package installer and installed the results but also no difference. This is a 108mbps card which is why I’d like to get it to work. But if it is not possible I could buy a 54mbps card
I’ll send a link I think is usefull
      http://en.techinfodepot.shoutwiki.com/wiki/D-Link_DWL-G650_rev_C4
Not sure if I missed any details if I did let me know. Sorry to ask for help again so soon but Im really stuck here, thanks for you help

        Hi!
I could make my cards with your chip work without ndiswrapper only once in 2008. I don’t remember the name of the distro.
Otherwise since 2005 with knoppix, they worked only with the above mentioned utility.

Ndiswrapper (when it works 🙂 ) works using the win drivers. The most recent they are, the better is.

If you use antiX 19, you can give it a try. With 21 no

In case you are able to make it to work in another way, please let me know, because I am interested.

          Well.

          dmesg | grep wlan0

ath5k is a pretty standard driver which has been around for ages abnd should not require ndiswrapper in my point of view.

Here is a old thread showing ath5k on my gear

          https://antixlinux.com/forum-archive/wifi-configuration-t3663-s90.html

Instead of guessing which driver like mad wifi. Would use

          lspci

To get the beginning numbers on it and google Debian with the search term to see what driver and if any firmware need be added on driver install.
So give up a lspci report also and we can point you on the right driver. A complete report.

          inxi -zv7

wont hurt to post that in this thread also. Good luck .

Just noticed yoiu mentioned wifi works but updates don’t. Is this a live session where repo on cdrom is all that is enabled.

            TO CHECK

            inxi -r

Not sure what you mean by updating with Dillo.

This is not a live session, it is a full installation. And what I was trying to say is that dillo wont load and apt update wont download files (if not wired)

Your chip is listed there. Been working since kernel 2.6.

I’d uninstall mad wifi since you don’t need it.

Not sure how to answer only downloads and installs packages with wired connection but wifi works for everything else?
Especially with eth1 showing down in your inxi report.

                dmesg looked normal. What did

                inxi -r

report? I am kinda stumped cuzz I see nothing wrong so far.

                    Hi,
as roki suggested please purge madwifi, pls use purge for anything you want to rid yourself of as far as possible.
do not want errant configuation files left as they can cause weird problems.
reboot before trying to connect to wifi again.
Unplug wired internet, if connected it will be prefered.

You do have a supported chipset: https://wiki.debian.org/ath5k

If I remember rightly there is a switch on your device which is often reported to be troublesome.
Maybe try toggling a few times and looking in logs to see if anything changes.

How are you trying to setup wifi, conmann or alternative ?.
                    https://wiki.debian.org/WiFi/HowToUse is informative and helpful.

If all else fails try an older kernel, or antiX 19 even 17 to see if you can get a connection.
If you are able we can than try and figure out a fix for issue on newer version.

Maybe I don’t understand your problem. Are you saying that it looks like you are connected to the internet via WiFi, but you can’t run apt update from a root terminal? I agree with Moddit, reboot with the hardwired ethernet disconnected to force it to use WiFi.

I wonder if there is a hardware switch or software switch that needs to be turned on? Fn F3 might be the key sequence for the software switch on an Acer laptop. You could try rfkill from a terminal to see if it’s blocked?

                      $ sudo rfkill
                      ID TYPE DEVICE SOFT HARD
                       0 wlan phy0 unblocked unblocked
                       8 bluetooth hci0 unblocked unblocked

Are you using Connman? Is it really online? Run it and Alt-F11 or Right click the title bar and select Fullscreen. Post screenshots of the Status, and Wieless tabs. Look at the Details tab. If you post a screenshot of that, maybe smudge part of the address.

So, what goes wrong when you run an update? From a root terminal, post the results from
                      apt update

I will try to send a screenshot aswell of my connman interface. It shows that it is connected and ready. But when I try something internet related it wont do anything.

@Irina060 – I get a similar problem sometimes, when using usb wifi adapters – I lose my network connection, but connman still says I’m connected- it even get to see the wifi signal and all, but no network traffic in or out is possible. Usually my solution is to unplug the usb adapter and plug it back on… since you can’t do that, you can try this: turn wifi off in connman, wait a couple of seconds, turn it back on and see if it works… you may get lucky…
If it’s a connman problem, another option is switching your network manager – antiX 21 has tool for that…

                          P.

Does it work if you first unplug the cable (with the wifi off) then switch on the wifi?
Would mean better do a reboot
When the wifi isn’t working, post the output of
                            /sbin/ifconfig
                            and route -n.
                            Also
                            run ping -n 8.8.8.8

I tried disconnecting and reconnecting, disconnect and unplug then plug back in and it auto connects, unplug with no warning and plug back in, and restarting and plugging again. Non of those worked. Sometimes the laptop wont recognise the pcmcia card first try but always the second. When I get home I will try to post the output of /sbin/ifconfig and route -n and then run ping -n 8.8.8.8
I will also try to see if I can switch the network manager.
I see no switch in the pcmcia card and the are some jumpers inside the laptop but those are only to configure the keyboard language.
I will try to send aswell a screenshot of the details tab of connman

Might also try to restart connman

                                sudo service connman restart

Like already mentioned try other kernels, install them with package installer.

Lets reinstall the firmware package in case something is wrong.
sudo apt update && sudo apt install firmware-atheros
No need for reinstall flag, (famous last words) apt should just
                                  reinstall the package.

                                  reboot without wired then:
Lets see if the firmware really is loading correctly-
sudo dmesg | grep 'ath5k\|firmw' Hope that is exact.

From here I would also try to connect after a switch to ceni.
I have a device where conmann gave me trouble.

Seems the reference to a switch was incorrect, sorry. The info came from a forum.
