I think their move away from Ubuntu is a good decision. Not sure about LXDE to XFCE. In general it is disappointing that most distros are clinging to just a few old, inflexible and bloated DEs such as KDE and Gnome, with XFCE not being far behind, with no apparent attempt to develop some new, more modular, efficient and flexible one.
For the lack of good DE out there the choice of JWM (or IceWM) SpaceFM (zzz…) and Connman appears to remain the best composition in existence…- This reply was modified 1 year, 3 months ago by olsztyn.

Have you used KDE recently? If so, was it syrup-like slow?
Bad rap for being “bloated”, but perhaps the “symptom” of having a larger memory footprint is a bit misleading. Many of its shared libraries are loaded into memory at start of desktop session to facilitate quick on-demand opening of the various KDE-native programs. The “sticking point”, for me at least, is the fact that none among those “various KDE-native programs” are my preferred app. Kate for editing? No, thanks. Dolphin for file browser? Again, thanks but no thanks…

Last I checked (more than a year ago), most the of PeppermintOS preinstalled programs were “SSB” (single site browser) applications. SSBs are a HUGE turnoff for me because while using one you lack access to (and enhancements//protections provided by) all the addons (er, WebExtensions) available when using the richer UI of a full-fledged web browser UI.

Yeah. I agree. It is more of a cloud based distro. I tried it long ago when it was Ubuntu based. My IBM T 23 did not like it.
While we are on different distros. I gave exton SlaxEX a live spin. While in Enlightenment. I could not find a connection manager ( Edit: I should say I understood} . So I went to my other computer and searched and saw this.
As regards SlackEX Build 220117 it is best/easiest to configure your WiFi connection while logged in to the Xfce4 Desktop/DE.
I think to myself. Aint that special. Shutdown the exton session and reformat the live usb on my antiX computer. So much for that live run.

By the term ‘inflexible’ I just meant what you already described – imposing a specific set of those ‘KDE-native’ arbitrarily selected programs, with no flexibility of composing a better set of tools.
As an example (I am not sure it is still the case with the latest) they used to give me this silly (I do not want to use a more derogatory term here) Konkeror (I think it means both FM and Web browser) and providing no possibility of removing this junk, in spite of installing a more useful browser and FM.Live antiX Boot Options (Previously posted by Xecure):

A few things have changed in PeppermintOS since Version 10:
1) The current release has moved from an Ubuntu base to a Debian base
2) Peppermint does still include SSB; (there are tools and mechanisms to avoid the use of SSB)
3) Calamares replaces Ubiquity for system installationI agree with those who prefer something else; I prefer a more hands-on style, and I can do “Cloud-based computing” from any system, including antiX without having to resort to this kind of scheme. I may eventually try it out, though I doubt that I’ll be keeping it.

I liked Peppermint very much. From PP8 to PP10 it was my main distro.
Now it is a disaster in terms of footprint: in the same pc, idle after the boot, the footprint increased from 350 Mb to 950 Mb. Really too much.
The look is still very nice, I like the choice to leave Ubuntu, I don’t understand why they have abandoned lxde, even if it is no longer developed it always works!
The last version of xfce is almost “heavy” as Plasma. So PP, that was born with pure openbox, now has lost his identity.
Luckily for me, I’m just starting to learn how to use Antix 🙂
