Would it be possible to start a computer up on boot from a USB3 docking station, linked with a 250gb SSD, on Frugal-Static?
Or should I just use a USB stick?
I’ve been watching Dolphin Oracle’s YouTube and I want to try and crank out the most of a 2013 ATOM machine.
I’ve also been watching a couple other videos. Credit to StaempunkTV BTRFS external hard-drive setup guide.
Having some fun with builds.
Soon my little 10 watt machine will be handling all my automated greenhouse tasks and run totally on solar, even in the middle of winter 😀
I imagine that would be possible, as long as you can set your PC to boot a USB port on the dock. some can’t. you would still need to set up a boot loader somewhere.
with a 2013 era intel-atom class machine…does that thing even have a USB3 port? otherwise, it doesn’t matter what the dock is if the port is only USB2. my older atom-based netbook is USB2 only. In that case, I install rather than run live…the spinning rust HD in that little guy is much faster than USB2 speeds.
Even if you have a USB3 port, there isn’t much to gain running a SSD on it. you are limited to the USB3 speeds. if you need the storage space, get yourself a great big USB stick and I think you’ll be happier. but for a greenhouse machine…I don’t think you’ll need the storage either. and using only the internal devices will be more power efficient I think.
