BASIC install of 19.20.1 and it works pretty well! Several programs – Links2, Manage Packages, Package Installer, etc. simply do not work.

This is 64 or 32 bits?
First, when booting from DVD, did you check iso integrity?

Press F4 in the boot screen and checkmd5 or checkfs to see if the DVD is OK.

Then, the second question is, did you check you had internet connection?
      ping google.com

none of them (Links2, Manage Packages, Package Installer) will work without internet.

      A. What is the command that prints out the status on my laptop, to assist bug-fix & optimizing?

      How to ask for help

When you first get here, we know you are confused and like lost in the woods a bit. To help us help you.
Whenever you 1st join the forums, give us these readouts from a terminal.
Just copy and paste then highlight the text on the page and click on code button.

These readouts will help us to help you.

      inxi -zv7

      But you can also use

      inxi -Fxz

      To show us your repositories.

      inxi -r

      B. How do I UPGRADE to FULL install of 19.20.1 OR 19.30 without burning a DVD?

Upgrading the system on the internet is enough to update it to 19.3. For full, you just need to install some extra packages from the package installer (libreoffice latest, synaptic package manager, and little more). Really, antiX base is enough. The rest can be downloaded if really needed.

Sorry for the very late answer PFO
The programs from controlcentre that don’t work on base are synaptic and packageinstaller

        sudo apt install synaptic packageinstaller

Here is an old list for antiX17, what is missing on base,

        https://antixlinux.com/applications-on-antix-full-but-not-included-on-antix-base/

Some packages from the list might are not needed anymore on antiX19, eg wicd
some packages you might not need.

Just found again a post from skidoo , also containing a link to a newer list on pastebin.

@PFO: I think Moddit’s comment was a follow up of my previous comment, not an answer to your question (folks “hijacked” your thread with tips on how to use low specs computers, me included…)

          B. How do I UPGRADE to FULL install of 19.20.1 OR 19.30 without burning a DVD?
          (No access to DVD burner.)
Putting all previous answers on a more consise one (divided into 2 parts):
1 -To update from antiX 19.X to 19.30 simply
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade
Please note that when you check your OS version, it will always point to the original version you started with ( 19.20.1, in your case)
2 -To update to “FULL” -like Xecure said, you have to install the components that don’t come with the “Base” version.
Check out skidoo’s posts on that.
For most common uses, you are simply missing “Synaptic” package manager, “packageinstaller” and “LibreOffice”
Like Caprea said, you can install the missing packages from the command line:
sudo apt install synaptic packageinstaller libreoffice

(If you really want to have the same libreoffice version that comes with antiX “Full”, skip the last part of the above command (“libreoffice”) and install LibreOffice lastest version from package installer > Office > Office-LibreOffice(US)Latest_full

          C. Other suggestions?
Yes, see many previous posts on this thread, including the ones talking about badwolf internet browser, if you want to use low powered devices to surf the web… Also take a look at the “tips and tricks” thread…

            Hey Dawgs,

So here I am after two weeks playing with a BASIC install of 19.20.1 and it works pretty well! Several programs – Links2, Manage Packages, Package Installer, etc. simply do not work. So, I have a few questions:

            A. What is the command that prints out the status on my laptop, to assist bug-fix & optimizing?

I’m not sure what you mean.

The inxi command shows information about the hardware and software, for example
            sudo inxi -Fxz

            B. How do I UPGRADE to FULL install of 19.20.1 OR 19.30 without burning a DVD?
            (No access to DVD burner.)

If you don’t care about the release name, simply do
            sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Then use either the package installer, synaptic or apt to install whatever other software that you want. No external media is required.

            C. Other suggestions?

If you have a few USB ports get a USB jump drive stick and use it to install software.

            Carry-on til you are carrion . . .

            PFO

              Hey DAWGS,

Here is the digital-daddy-wack readout of the 32 BIT – CD loaded 19.2.1 Basic HP celeron M Laptop. Burned a CD, because the hardware is too old to burn DVDs like most WIN XP boxes here in SE Europe – SO I have to work within the environment where I`ve landed.

Your repos seem to be good. And I can see you have been able to install softmaker’s freeoffice (or tryied to install it using the package installer or other sources).
That means internet is working for you OK, right (meaning you can connect and it works on the antiX machine, can open websites, etc.)?

                  So, when you say:

Several programs – Links2, Manage Packages, Package Installer, etc. simply do not work.

What exactly is the response of these programs?
Is it that they don’t launch? or if they open properly, they don’t do as expected? It would be good if you can explain what exactly doesn’t work (launching, moving the window, buttons dont do anything, you cannot close the window, etc.) or you give us a bit more information of your experience using them.

I initially thought it would be related to internet connection, but you didn’t mention any internet problems so I can discard the posibility.

I hope we can help you solve the problems so you can have a positive experience with antiX on your computer.

I was able to upgrade several packages today using a very similar configuration. Yesterday the la.mxrepo was behind in collecting all of the updates, perhaps it was either offline for a few hours or overloaded during the weekend. This morning it was fine and up to date. Rayloo had temporary issues with the same site and I believe that he also was able to update later, so try again and let us know if this is working for you now or not.

                      Hello Xecure,

                      Let`s answer your questions first.

LINKS2 just opens as a blank gray screen. I diownloaded an upgrade and unpacked the tar.gz file but have no idea how to proceed from there.

Tried to install Softmaker’s Freeoffice with similar result.

MANAGE PACKEAGES gives me the following error when trying to UPGRADE PACKAGES:

LINKS2 just opens as a blank gray screen.

That is how it works. The first time you launch it, it tells you what button to use to navigate.
If you press F1 it will give you a small list of hotkeys.
Pressing Escape key will display the top menu. To go to a website, use the menu (File > Go to URL) and write the url there (for example antixlinux.com). Hit Enter and it will go to the URL. Links2 is mostly driven by keyboard shortcuts.

You might want to run ‘apt –fix-broken install’ to correct these.

Before fixing the packages, I recommend you change the repo mirror.
Control centre > Maintenance > Repo Manager
In the first tab for antiX mirrors, I would select a mirror in Greece or Italy, as they are most reliable and faster for your location. Select one and click apply.
On the second tab, for Debian repos, use the button at the bottom “Select faster Debian repo for me”. Apply and close.

To fix the packages, launch a terminal from the menu and do:

                          sudo apt update
                          sudo apt -f install
                          sudo apt upgrade

The first command is to update the packagelist so we are sure all packages to be downloaded are found (and to use the mirrors selected above).
The second command is to fix any broken packages.
The third command is optional, but recommended to get recent bugfixes. It may be a bit slow for a limited bandwidth, so you can ignore it.

If you decide not to install all updates, at least install the package installer updates so you can get the most recent packages from there.
                          sudo apt install packageinstaller

From there, try again to download Free Office from the program Package Installer (white bag-like icon on the toolbar or from Control Centre > System > Package Installer), or, as you already have it active in the repo lists, use the command:
                          sudo apt install softmaker-freeoffice-2018

If the above works, let us know of any other problems and we will try to help.

If the above doesn’t work, let us know what other errors or problems you see and we will also try to help solve them.

Google Earth is not working with the current set-up.

My first suggestion is to remove it, at least temporarily.

                            sudo apt remove google-earth-pro-stable

                            Then

sudo apt update; sudo apt full-upgrade

That ought to get the existing software working. I doubt that the ‘pro’ version of Google Earth will work properly without disruption to the nosystemd infrastructure. You can experiment with that later if you wish, but it appears that is what caused at least one problem.

                              Hey Dawgs,

                              Back with an HP desktop:
                              WIN XP
                              2 Ghrz Processor
                              2 Gig RAM
                              40 Gig HD

                              I partitioned the drive to:

                              10 Gig – WIN XP
                              10 Gig – antiX 19.2.1 Base
                              1.0 Gig – Linux Swap
                              18 Gig – Unused

But, antiX doesn’t Boot and I get a GRUB not found error message.

                              Advice?

                                Boot right back to the live antiX CD/DVD or USB and do two tests;
                                1. Find the antiX installation. In the boot menu of the live CD, select “Switch to Grub Bootloader”. The bootloader will switch to a grub bootloader. Select “Boot Rescue menus”.
See if you can find your antiX installation with “Find GRUB bootloaders”. If antiX is found, try to enter it.
If you can enter into your antiX installation, then you know antiX works but the grub didn’t install properly. If you couldn’t enter antiX, there is still hope. Follow step 2 using a antiX Live session instead of the installed system.

                                2. Fixing Grub with Boot Repair. If you could boot into your installed antiX system (or if doing this from a live session), go to the Control Centre and, in the Maintenance tab, use Boot Rescue to reinstall and then fix the grub installation.
Remember to install/fix grub in MBR option.
Reinstall grub will ask which partition antiX is installed in and where you want to install GRUB (select MBR installation).
After reinstalling grub, go back and select the FIX grub option (very important you do this also). Point it to where antiX is installed, and follow the steps.

If there is any problem during the process, please try to describe in detail what you did and what went wrong.
The worst case scenario is having to install antiX again.
