::Hellow all,
Could you help me please?
I installed Antix 21 on my Asus EEE 901 PC.
My bigger problem started with “no sound” Youtube in Chromium.I find that pipewire is better choice especially in poor hw.
It sounds great, so I tried.Concretely I tried steps 1. – 4. in first post from Xecure.
Sound is functionally, but in Chromium isn’t possible play audio/video now.
Next problem is, that volume icon disappeared. Is possible change volume in antix control centre/hardware/adjust volume sound (Alsamixer?)I tried apt update (upgrade) too, but no success.
I didn’t find pulseaudio-utils too. It is necessary with new version pipewire yet ?
Wget? From where?What else I can do?
Thanks for advice- This reply was modified 1 year, 1 month ago by 4technik. Reason: spell check english language

::pulseaudio-utils is installable on antiX21.

I dont have pipewire installed, but sound in chromium has been a already registered problem here on the forum

::Hi 4technik,
First thing is to be clear about what the problems are.
It seems from your report that:
1. Audio works with Pipewire, BUT
2. No longer possible to change volume using alsamixer or the (missing) volume-icon.
3. You don’t find pulseaudio-utils in your repositories
4. YouTube videos aren’t launching.
If I have that correct,
**a. Have you installed pavucontrol, which can be used to control the volume when using pipewire?
If pavucontrol allows you to control volume, input and outputs, then the audio issue might be fixed(!!) (If not, then it might be a problem with alsa that sound servers like Pipewire and Pulseaudio work through.)b. If the audio problem is different than I summarized above, please clarify which devices or sources are working and which aren’t.
N.B. Pipewire has improved MUCH in ease of use. I don’t know the version in antiX-21, since I am “only” running 17, 19 and Sid at this time.
c. The video NOT playing in YouTube might not be related to playing audio. In that case, I suggest you start a new post to seek help with that.
(You might test whether videos play OK in other programs to see if it is a YouTube specific problem. You can download YouTube videos with a youtube downloader app (youtube-dl is one program in the repos; there are others also) and try playing them with a program like VLC or celluloid.)Hope that is helpful.
Others may suggest things you should list from your running system using dmesg, inxi or other useful analytic tools, but I am a rather low level user and can only respond from my experience with Pipewire.
Please post a response whether you get things fixed or not.

::Hi,
thkanks you for reply!I really don’t have it in Antix. But I don’t know, if is it is necesarry.
apt-cache policy pulseaudio-utils pulseaudio-utils: Instalovaná verze: (žádná) Kandidát: 14.2-2.0nosystemd1 Tabulka verzí: 14.2-2.0nosystemd1 500 500 http://mirror.karneval.cz/pub/linux/mxlinux-packages/antix/bullseye bullseye/nosystemd i386 Packages 14.2-2 500 500 http://ftp.cz.debian.org/debian bullseye/main i386 PackagesIf pipewire will not be ready to play sound in chromium. I will have to return pulse audio and repair alsa.
Thanks for links. (The second link I tried (before reinstall AntiX last week) with partly success – more info bellow.I would like give chance for pipewire yet.
1. YES
2. I appear that is posible change sound with function keys on netbook or in alsamixer in system center
Only volume icon isn’t on bar near clocks. But it isn’t big problem for me if is it possible by fn keys.
3. OK
4. YES, but momentally i know only about chromium problems. Before I changed pulse to pipewire
videos worked, but in youtube didn’t work sound in youtube. Now if i in chromium run something web
with video and I click enable on sound icon, video hangs and don’t work too.
I like chromium, because in Seamonkey isn’t possible run youtube, there isn’t google translater, or login to other google aps too. Firefox ESR still consume very much cpu and ram.
It’s a pity , it isn’ possible use in Chromium full synchronize (i read that it google blocked before year)
and Chrome for x86 isn’t 🙁A) I am not sure, that I installed pavucontrol and “pavucontrol” command in terminal don’t exist.
B) Ok, I give chance for pipewire yet
C) Before clean install AntiX 21 I tried reinstall(last week) ALSA/Pulseaudio and video worked with audio in Chromium. But sometime Chromium with more tabs turned off often. It wasn’t stable for me. So I tried reinstall Antix.
So now I am sure, that audio and video problems are at least in audio software/drivers 🙁What do you suggest? Install Pavucontrol first? (apt install Pavucontrol?)
Thank you

::Hi 4techik,
I have very limited expertise in most areas, so I will limit my comments.
First, Make sure that you only have one sound server (Pipewire or Pulseaudio) installed at the same time. I believe they might conflict and at least confuse things.
**Second, it NOW sounds like you can play audio OK as long as it isn’t part of a YouTube video. Is that correct? Or is it that the video works on YouTube but without audio? If you can install a YouTube downloader and run the video in a program like celluloid or VLC, you can see if it is strictly a problem of running videos on YouTube in a browser.
***I hope others jump in to help you with the YouTube problem, since that is often not directly a sound problem, I believe.
*** For audio, I would definitely install pavucontrol. I use it as a gui rather than from the terminal. (Since you are using chromium, I assume you are running a graphic interface (X.org?).
As always, you are encouraged to search the forum and the alsa, and pipewire fora to find examples of similar problems – hopefully with solutions.

::Hi,
1. I have limited exercises with Linux too.
In command line(whereis, find) I don’t see pulse command. But in Audio Menu is pavucontrol aplication named
pulse audio???- etc. screenshot
How to check it for 100%?2. In Antix preinstalled youtube application it works. In Browsers(Seamonkey, Chromium) doesn’t work
any sound in video now.
Youtube.com In Chromium doesn’t play videos and after a while it appears error about sound.3. I am sure that it is SW audio problem, I wrote about my test before reinstall Antix.
4. I installed pavucontrol and I doesn’t other change after I run it from GUI in rox-ICEWM or ROXterm.
5. I find, but Antix / Nosystemd Linux is a bit speciality
Any idea?
Thank You.Attachments:

::hi 4technik,
***1. Since sound is directly dependent upon alsa and any additional server (Pulseaudio or Pipewire for example), it would be worthwhile for you to look for similar issues posted on the alsa and pipewire fora. alsa is on github and pipewire is on gitlab. I did see a complaint about sound in chromium discussed on the pipewire issues section on gitlab. (This was resolved in one case after an update to pipewire version 0.3.34 and in the other case by purging and reinstalling alsa (IIRC).
2. Pipewire is still in relatively early development and is rapidly changing, so your issue may simply require an update whenever that comes to the antiX-21 repositories (see #1).
**2a. You shouldn’t have both Pulseaudio and Pipewire installed at the same time. Do you? If you had previously installed both, Pulseaudio should be purged to eliminate residual configuration files.
2b. I noticed multiple instances of pipewire-pulse and pipewire media session running in the htop session you posted. I only have one instance of each of these, even after starting three different sound streams (two YouTube and one VLC) – with only one running at a time.
3. I am unclear if (a) you purged alsa before reinstalling it or just removed it. Purging would get rid of configuration files which might cause a problem.
4. Remember that Pipewire works thru alsa. In alsamixer, Pipewire should be selected as the server. In addition, the speaker headphones and master columns should be checked to make sure they aren’t muted (“MM” at bottom of a column).
6. I noticed your repositories are “.cz”. If you are in the Czech republic, you might wish to look at Jan Grulich’s site (https://jgrulich.cz/tag/pipewire/) and contact him about your issues. His work includes WebRTC, chromium and Pipewire.

::Hi 4 tecknik,
What about the alsamixer master, speaker and headphone columns levels (if they are visible)? Are any of them muted (“MM”)?
(On my system, Pipewire is currently installed and the card and chip in alsamixer are listed as Pipewire and the only columns are “Master” and “Capture”.)
If Pipewire is currently installed on your system, does htop still show multiple instances of pipewire-pulse as in the photo you posted before?

::Hi 4technik,
1. In my alsamixer, F3 (Playback) displays only Master; F5 displays Master and Capture. I assume if you press F5, you will get the same results and I consider that “normal” since my system is working.
2. I haven’t seen issues posted on the gitlab pipewire site about duplicate instances of pipewire or associated programs, but I don’t have any duplicates on my working Pipewire system.
3. I did note a problem with some NON antix kernels. What kernels have you tried?

::HI,
yes, if I press F5 in Alsa Mixer, I see the same.I do not tried with kernel anything.
I do not know about it.March 23, 2022 at 10:26 pm #79652Memberstevesr0
::hi 4technik,
The kernel is the core software that connects applications to hardware. The development of the linux kernel was started by Linus Torvalds when he was a graduate student. Currently, its development and maintenance involves many, many thousands of developers and Linus still leads the development process.
There are many kernels available in the repositories. Some kernels that have been customized by the antiX lead developer (anticapitalista) to work well with antiX.
I found that when I used two “regular” kernels (available from the debian repositories) that they didn’t detect my usb headset.
I think it might be an issue involving alsa components in the kernel and or the udev that the “regular” kernels use – which is different than the eudev built for antiX. It might just be a particular problem with my installation.
My “work around” is to use the antiX kernels – in the repositories they have an “antix” tag.
**IF you want to see if a different kernel makes a difference, you can install others from the repositories. I would recommedn one of the antiX custom, recommended ones.
Anticapitalista posts a list of currently recommended kernels, especially with security in mind. Some are better for older machines, others are versions of very new kernels.
His current recommendations for systems running antiX-19 or -21 or Sid are:
5.10.104 (64bit and 32 bit pae and non-pae-486)
4.19.222 (64bit and 32 bit pae and non-pae-486)
4.9.0-294 (64 bit and 32 bit pae and non-pae-486)
4.4.0-296 (64 bit and 32 bit pae and non-pae-486)There are both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.
You can check what kernel you are using from the terminal with the “uname” command. I am aware of two options “uname -r” which gives basic information and “uname -a” which gives more information.
If you install a kernel that is newer than the one that was part of the install of antiX-21, that will automatically be selected at boot. But you can boot from a different one from the grub menu by clicking on (something like) “advanced option”.
