I’m taking a vacation trip to Athens in mid-March, and I’m interested in ideas on what to do and see from the wise Greek citizens and travelers on this forum.

Also I’ll be spending a few days in the Peloponnese.

I’m especially interested in seeing the places that typical tour guides aren’t telling me about.

I know I can count on you fine folks. Thanks in advance!

hey, i could suggest things to see in Athens, but that would depend on what you like to do mostly.
there are archaeological sites, museums, live music, restaurants, traffic… 🙂 everything you’d expect from a western metropolis really..
even hackerspace.gr might be of some interest(?).
you can probably also (online)search for things you’d like to do in Athens, not much is hidden from tour guides these days…
disclaimer: don’t live in Athens anymore, but was born/raised there…

peloponnese is beautiful, with lots of scenery changes while traveling around… mountains, sandy beaches, caves, rivers… might be able to suggest excursions or places to visit there as well, depending on which part of peloponnese (north/south/west/east/central) you’re visiting…

I live in Greece, but not in Athens. In fact I haven’t been to Athens for many years.
Some of the ‘typical’ tourist spots are worth visiting eg the Parthenon and Acropolis museum. Just don’t eat and drink there.
Just wandering around the centre you will see many ancient buildings such as the University, Museum as well as more recent sites of historical interest ie Polytechnic area where the uprising against the dictatorship was crushed by tanks in 1973.

If you are in South Peloponnese and you have your own transport, the Mani is worth a visit as is Monemvasia.

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

yes indeed. fine tip, common for most touristic places.

ie Polytechnic area where the uprising against the dictatorship was crushed by tanks in 1973.

nowadays there’s cops everywhere around that place (Exarheia), so it kind of resembles ’73 mood. nice walk though.. with numerous cafeterias/bars/taverns/restaurants in the area..

            i think this not-so-typical guide covers a lot for a short stay : https://wikitravel.org/en/Athens
maybe a little outdated, and would probably avoid some names in their “Eat” suggestions.

The Mani and Monemvasia look spectacular. I’ll keep checking back here for more recommendations, so feel free to keep them coming. Hopefully I’ll be able to post a few scenic pics here during the trip.
