Someone, Please take pity on us,
This old man has still not figured out how/where to switch off the enlarging popups
of toolbar icons which came with update this morning. No warning of the change.

They, the enlarged popups are fast and like flashing giving a neurodiverse and very
      sensitive person problems.

Hi @Moddit – as you know, I use IceWM, but with my Ft10 toolbar, so I have no idea what you are talking about. Even so, I took a peek at icewm’s preferences file. Could this by the offending setting?

        # Show the huge (48x48) of the window icon for the active window
        # QuickSwitchHugeIcon=0 # 0/1

If that setting is not commented out and it’s set to 1 try setting it to 0, save the change and restart IceWM

At first glance I saw no other setting that seems to affect an icon’s size, making it “enlarge”. But then again, I just updated my system and icewm did not update. It’s package version is “3.2.2-1.0antix1 amd64”

        P.

          Hi PPC, Thanks for response,
Sorry, Should have noted sid and ICEWM version 3.2.3.1.

apt history shows main suspects are
          icewm:amd64 (3.2.2-1.0antix1, 3.2.3-1.0antix1),
          icewm-common:amd64 (3.2.2-1.0antix1, 3.2.3-1.0antix1)
but I might be missing something.

The popups show icon and name enlarged.

          QuickSwitchHugeIcon has no effect.

Normaly user settings, prefs and pref overrides or theme choice in home are not affected by updates

I suspect this might be compiled in, Hopefully the boss or BobC will know more.

I looked over at Ice site but this is very new so probably why nothing found.

Got it, the answer was in the request to Icewm devs from cheapy :-), zoom size is variable.
              https://github.com/bbidulock/icewm/issues/637
Assuming the preference will be set to 0 in newer installs, users with older installs need to
              add the preference.

              In Icewm /home/username/.icewm/preferences

              add near bottom
              ToolbarIconZoomSize=0

do icewm — restart back to peaceful interface.

Mea culpa. I always try to own up to my mistakes. On my big screen with many small icons and eyes that are slowly deteriorating, the big popup icons are beautiful, but it shows that what is a benefit to one person, could be a distraction to someone else.

I’ve asked for a preferences/prefoverride option to turn them off/on.

PS: Moddit, I had asked for the size originally, but didn’t explain the reasoning (ie 0 doesn’t pop up) well to the IceWM Dev, and looking at the code, I think that probably would have been even more difficult, but turning it off/on might be less of a problem for them. My error was to request it without asking opinions first.

                  @BobC …”I’ve asked for a preferences/prefoverride option to turn them off/on.”

Yes, will be much better (as a friendly option On or OFF)

Edit: But your idea is a nice improvement too (in some cases).

BobC, Thanks, No need to apologise, we are learning new things, experimenting and trying to improve usability.
Your help and positive input is very highly regarded here.

Nothing wrong with the option, it looks good, improves the interface of ice and for sure helpful to new users or
anyone with poorer eysight. At least until icons and position are in memory.

The option will be really useful if next version comes with more additions to toolbar, mini gui and script to change
preference to 0 if wished for, perfect.

I am guessing devs coded in source the popups size 60 but the assumption default 0 as in request was in your
                    head.

As already posted I added ToolbarIconZoomSize=0 in preferences

My local users fix will be to add the setting, Short explainer on top, job done :-).

Was going to do in shell but will not, a sneaky way to get users to see what a lot of possibilitys the config offers.

@BobC… It will be a good idea too, to ask for an option on/off to hide window title in the taskbar too.

Sadly my, I thought fix, isnt really working, will wait for reaction from ICEWM devs.

Most machines are on antiX 22 so as yet no big issue.

an option on/off to hide window title in the taskbar too.

I did a long time ago, when I was modifying one of the default Window Managers available in antiX- I think it was Icewm. I remember I did that reducing the width of the title of the windows in the taskbar, to be the same as the icon’s size. I probably used the setting recommended in that link:

                          Set “TaskbarButtonWidthDivisor=25” in ~/.icewm/preferences

But yeah, probably a GUI for that would be nice.

I wonder if it’s because of antiX that IceWM has such a rapid development cicle- for such a light WM, it’s stacking up features, after features, after features. Us antiX users aren’t missing a lot now.

IceWM with a nice theme is can be light, nice looking and full of nice features.

My suggestion? Include on the prefoverride file, add keyboard shortcuts (windows key + up/down/left/right) out of the box, for tiling windows, maybe? They seem to be the de facto standard (meaning: what Windowz users have)

                          P.

I believe they use the “Huge” icon size.

If you set it to 8 in ~/.icewm/prefoverride you may be happy again, that is until you find whatever else huge icons get used for…

                              # Dimension of the large icons
                              HugeIconSize=8 # [8-128]

Thanks for suggestion, setting huge Icons to 8 seems to make no difference.

Gimp popup is still 2 3/4 inch wide , android device USB connect 2.5 inch wide
all near 1 inch high, this is a 1920*1080 wide screen monitor the visual
effect will vary according to dot pitch of screens.

The application name display is what makes some icons popup so wide so maybe
in the end it should for example only display Gimp rather than full name.
Android connect perhaps better than Android device usb connect. or text in
                                two lines rather than one
Gnu Image Manipulation Program widest I found as yet leafpad one of narrowest.

Maybe to avoid further complication the easy option for users to turn off the effect
is best. I think those coming from windoze or apples OS will not be disturbed.

Yes, having a prefoveride with a few common options included would be very nice. With a few initial comments what the prefoverride actually does. And, I think, all the options commented out, so that they are merely there as suggestions. As it is right now, there isnt even a prefoveride file available so the user has to figure out that such a file is useful and then create it. Editing the preferences file can be a frustrating endevour as a lot of the options are overridden by the theme. So the prefoverride file really is the way to go.
