Porting MX tools to antiX & creating new tools

Hi friends,

first, let me begin by saying that after 13 years of using Ubuntu, I feel like I finally found a new home. This past month I’ve been trying Debian, (X/L)/Ubuntu LTS & the short-term release, Mint, OpenSUSE, Manjaro, MX and decided to settle on antiX, which I consider the best GNU/Linux desktop distro I’ve ever used. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to everyone involved in making antiX what it is.

1) I was wondering if we can get the cronjob GUI & GRUB editor[0] ported to antiX?
[0]I was personally interested in the option to disable the grub menu. I can’t see why it couldn’t be ported.

2) I think it would be nice to create a guideline on how to contribute to creating new tools for the Control Panel. Many users might be interested in this. Maybe a new dedicated subcategory to the forum would be useful. I’ve never worked with gtkdialog (which I assume antixcc.sh uses), but I’ve made plenty of scripts with kdialog/zenity/yad. Also played a bit with Glade, but never edited the XML by hand. Perhaps others would like to join as well.

3) If you need any help with a new stylesheet for the website & forum – while of course – maintaining the good usability practices, please let me know. I would be happy to help.

I understand that people prefer GUI to editing files manually, so having access to these tools may be desirable. Fortunately, the most important mx tools that are not relevant to only MX (or xfce/kde) are (most of them) already in the antiX or its repos.

The name of the mentioned apps (not included in original’s OP):
GRUB APP: mx-boot-options
CRONJOB GUI: job-scheduler

The Good news: no need to port anything to antiX. You can add the mx repos to the apt sources (make sure that you use buster only for MX 19 or bullseye for MX 21 repos), give it lower priority and update the packagelist. Then you can install any MX package.

We contribute some tools from time to time, some make it to antiX official, some don’t. We created a gitlab group named antix-contribs. We are few, badly organized, and slow on executing things (mainly my fault for neglecting things).
If you have experience with shell scripts, I consider you would do better with dialogbox instead of other methods to create GUIs for your scripts (I am able to create moch more complex GUIs with it), though it is qt based.

Good to have another creator around.

I hope you stay with us, I would like you to know that even “We are few, badly organized, and slow on executing things” as Xecure wrote, we are trying to organize ourselves. Also be aware that your valuable programs may have translations if they are available on the Transifex website, as other translation platforms are more difficult for volunteer translators to carry out their work of communication between the programmer’s program and the end user of the different languages.

The topic antiX and antiX Application Program Translation Platforms has the translation platforms that I’ve managed to put together so far.

Please check @Robin’s code on how to prevent problems translating programs with languages ​​that are longer than 2 letters, there is not only 2 letter or 4 letter languages ​​(I didn’t even know this) which was explained in the topic Important information for script developers concerning the language identifiers.

Saiba também que os seus valiosos programas poderão contar com traduções se estiverem disponíveis no sítio Transifex, pois as outras plataformas de traduções são mais difíceis para os tradutores voluntários realizarem o seu trabalho de comunicação entre o programa do programador e o usuário final dos diferentes idiomas.

Thank you @Xecure, just what I needed! Altough I’m curious, why don’t those tools get added to the CC by default (or at least to the repos)? They are not heavy at all and adding them is quite easy.

We contribute some tools from time to time, some make it to antiX official, some don’t. We created a gitlab group named antix-contribs.

I see. I’ve never worked in an open-source project before but I’m looking forward to help. I’ve never used Gitlab before (other than to clone repos), does it also offer a platform for discussion or voting?

I can even go wrong by using the word “invite” or “invitation”, apparently it doesn’t sound good in some languages, but in my language “invite someone” or “give an invitation” is something very appreciated in my country.

Eu posso até errar por utilizar a palavra “convidar” ou “convite”, ao que parece não soa bem em alguns idiomas, mas no meu idioma “convidar alguém” ou “fazer um convite” é algo muito apreciado no meu país.
“Sinta convidado a participar da equipe de tradutores voluntários do antiX para o seu idioma”.

We are a small community with a big heart to help people.

Like Marcelocripe, I am also a translator for antiX in French.
I also know that French is the second or third language studied in Romania.

If you want to use antiX in Romanian, you can translate the files that are in English at your own convenience.

It would be nice to have an additional language to offer to the whole antiX community.

It’s not complicated because I never used Gitlab to translate the texts. I don’t have all the skills of Marcelocripe!
