From my Dell D620 laptop that I’m building from AntiX-17-1_x64 Core, with Ethernet, Roaming WiFi and IceWM running, using Mrxvt-mini terminal, no conky, no background pic, no desktop icons.

I’m cheating here … It’s not Antix, it’s my very personal “myOwNix” 😉

I can’t post output of ps_mem.py since I never had it. Actually, I don’t even have the OS itself anymore but, I still have a couple of screenshots that I kept as a memory.

For fun and just to show that it doesn’t have to be herbstluftwm if you’re on low resources.

It was a full fledged “Distro” with everything one needs for everyday work and with i3, LXDE and OpenBox “out of the box”.

    Enjoy!

Also, just for fun and as a reference, Modicia OS (XFCE) and Ubuntu — both latest 2018 editions.

Same as above. Exacly same PC bur, reinstalled with 64-bit.
For those who wanna know the 32 vs 64-bit difference.
Also 32-bit base vs. 64-bit full.

Did you notice the discrepancy between RAM usage that Conky shows you and what ps_mem is showing?
So, which one to trust? antiX 17.1 i3wm (with all updates & upgrades == should be 17.2).

    ps_mem.py -s
    top
    htop
    free
    free -m
    free -h
    free -t
Yeah, confusing er counterintuitive. Each of these reports a different total and, by re-checking “free -t” several times in quick succession, can give the impression “OMG there’s a memory leeeeeak!”

In case anyone cares to track down the calculations involved in the “mem” variable exposed via the .conkyrc
    here’s a suggested starting point: https://github.com/brndnmtthws/conky/search?q=memdirty&unscoped_q=memdirty

    geany /usr/local/bin/ps_mem.py
We can notice in the header, comments describing how the calculations have been tweaked across versions.
antiX ships an older version of the script. You might download latest version, test it side-by-side. FWIW, my quick testing showed a variance of less than 1 MiB (total reported by older, vs current version)

ps_mem: A utility to accurately report the in core memory usage for a program
After launching a simple (25 lines of code) pygtk script which displays a dialogbox, I find the ps_mem output attributes 20Mb+ to it, er the commandline process responsible for launching it. After launching a second instance of that tiny progam, I find both the ps_mem and conky “used” totals are again significantly increased (but by different amounts!)…

…which seems counterintuitive, considering the tested pygtk script utilizes “shared libraries”.
Okay, there’s overhead from instantiating another python interpreter process but, c’mon… 20Mb ???
    Trust?
    Trust, but verify.
Because ps_mem harvests info directly from procfs (each /proc/*/smaps file), we should consider its “Shared” stats trustworthy.

The discrepancy between “total used” reported by ps_mem vs conky (and various other tools) probably reflects whether or not a given tool discounts memory used by or reserved for use by cache and/or buffers

Well … With 32 GB of RAM I‘m not really concerned but, discrepancy between 64 and 115 is still pretty high. 😉

Top seems to be calculating an exact number similar to what ps_mem.py ends up with, but I do like ps_mem.py’s list format in ascending sequence much better.
