I have two Dell laptops: Latitude D620 (duel core-2 GHz processor) and Latitude E6400 (duel core 2.52 GHz processor). Both have 2 GB of RAM. I will probably continue using them for the next 10-20 years with antiX. I just surf the internet with PaleMoon or Firefox and use Libre Office and a Photo Viewing program. Two GB of RAM is more that adequate running antiX now which only take 117mb of RAM.

I have a chance to buy some used RAM which would increase them to 3 or 4 GB each. I am just wondering if 2GB of RAM will be adequate for the next 10-20 years, or if it would be prudent to increase it to 3 or 4 GB.

If it is not too expensive, get the extra RAM since you lose nothing (well, some £ or $ or Euros) and gain. Every new release is getting heavier RAM-wise, so who knows hat will be considered lite-RAM in 10-20 years time, maybe 16GB will be light?

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

I can get two sticks of 2GB DDR2 6400 RAM for a total of $20 (that’s $10 for each stick). It is used RAM. Does that sound like a good deal?

It does to me, a bargain actually.
Just make sure that the sticks will work on your laptop.

You will find web browsers & other software requiring the use of more ram as they ‘feature creep’, even the Linux kernel gets bigger with each release as it incorporates software/drivers for new equipment. The more ram you can get, the longer those computers will stay useful. 🙂

Grinning at this thread as he struggles along on his IBM T23.

At least I can still get on the internet on it.

Feature regression. Xorg leaving me behind. Browser support dropped for non sse2 cpus. I gotta tell ya.
They just won’t make getting on the play ground easy for me. Ha Ha.

Funny part of all of this stuff is. Hardware is outlasting software support.
Ya gotta be geek to run this stuff.
Not being a geek myself. This makes it doubly hard.

PS. I spent more for a used lcd cable on my Panasonic CF-48 to keep it going than you have to pay for those ram sticks.
If me. I’d snatch em up.

I always advise anybody to max out the RAM to what the motherboard will take, especially if you can get it cheap.Browsers and their add-ons are notorious for grabbing RAM. You will be happier in any event.
