      Hi, everyone,
just trying my printer to connect an HP Deskjet 460 (with USB). I installed antix-19-base- on a Thinkpad T 41 and previously installed “system-config-printer 1.5.11-4” from Synaptic. This app starts, but I cannot find my printer. Do I need any additional programs and / or drivers?
      Kind regards
      Kexs

Hi! Make sure you installed CUPS and if that does not work, try checking out this:

Hi Kexs, you will almost certainly need to install hplip and hplip-gui to get your deskjet working properly. Both available in the repo
          so just install with apt..
Ensure cups is installed and running, you can check by easily entering localhost:631 in the browser of your choice, that will take you to the
cups interface, there you can see if your printer is recognised, later print a test page and make advanced settings if wished for.

It is well worth taking a bit of time to look around cups interface, it has helped me many times with printer troubles.

I followed your instructions, first entered the test with “localhost:631” in the browser line: no result. Then cups (2.2.10-6 + deb10u) installed with Synaptic. The printer has now been recognized and the drivers have been downloaded automatically. Then the test page printed. However, since other functions do not work (level of color cartridges, calibration) I also installed “hplip” and “hplip-gui” and “hpijs-ppds” from Synaptic. Unfortunately, these other functions of the printer still do not work afterwards. Printing (the most important) works though. The additional HP drivers from Synaptic would probably not have been necessary at all. But I can also be wrong.
Thanks for the help 🙂 To look inside the CUPS site i will do.
            Greetings Kexs (Bisquit)

Hi Kexs, good to know you can now print, unfortunately most printers do not show ink levels on linux,
you can print a test page from within cups GUI, not sure on how easy it is to use advanced settings
              for your particular device.
You needed hplip” and “hplip-gui, not sure on additional PPDs, you could just purge the packet and see
if you can still print but as a small package ( less than 150 KB) I would be inclined to leave as is.

HP only directly supports Windoze or Mac OS on most of their printers but is involved with hplip project.

You may find some help or interesting info on

The page about hplip from the ubuntu-wiki applies mostly to antiX as well.
hp-toolbox or hp-setup , started from terminal as normal user perhaps shows some more possibilities
                https://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/HPLIP/

Also you can look what is not included on base

For fun try the this command in the terminal, sudo service cups restart [Enter key]
If it’s wi-fi capable the Print settings app may find it. On a usb it should work if the printer isn’t just released for sale.

Thanks caprea, the buntu link is good, especialy list of commands may also be of good use at another time
                    for forum users.

Die einzelnen Funktionen der grafischen Toolbox lassen sich auch separat aus dem Terminal aufrufen:

hp-unload Zugriff auf Speicherkarten Memory card function unload.

Hi Kexs, if you are ok now please mark thread as solved.

I tend not to recommend wifi printing, every device logged in to a router reduces available bandwidth.
If a lot of neighbours also have wifi routers cable network is way faster.

                      Thank you for your posts.
My printer is now working and with the hp driver I can now also carry out additional functions with fill level, maintenance via an hp entry in the start menu. Excellent !
The ability to request status requests via the terminal is great. I’m still trying this out.
                      The problem is solved. 🙂

@least in ICEWM it is easy to add a button in the toolbar for running the status command or others.
Probably same for other desktops but as I only use ice no experience.
