I would like to avoid reinstalling anti-X. Any ideas?

Do you possibly have a hardware muting on?

If you boot with a live distribution (or with another OS on the same machine), do you have sound working?

          Did you reboot?

What got updated? Have a look in /var/log/apt/history.log

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

Yes, I have rebooted. I also tried another kernel. Still no change. I will reboot of a live cd and see what happens.

I am unable to post the output of “cat /var/log/apt/history.log” for today. Word press is blocking it. Says it is an unsafe operation.
            I will try another approach.

In control centre, try sound card chooser

There is no hardware muting on this PC. I have tried plugging in headphones. Still no luck.

I tried sound card chooser and tested the sound card after selecting it. Says it can connect to the selected device (ie my main sound card) but still no sound.
                  Will try a liveCD now.

I tried the antiX 19 LiveCD. The sound works fine with the LiveCD.

So it looks like a config problem with my install.
If I cannot find the problem, I may need to reinstall.

Here is asound.conf if this helps. It looks the same as the LiveCD.

Is there any way to reinstall alsa in antiX?
Or will have just have to wipe my drive and reinstall antiX?

Could not see a way to reinstall alsa in antiX (unlike other OS’s which have the alsa-base package).

But I finally to my sound to work in antiX 19 after reinstalling the following:

                        sudo apt-get install --reinstall libasound2 libsamplerate0

I thought I solved the problem with the alsa sound but I did not.

After a reboot, sometimes the sound works and sometimes it does not.
If the sound does not work on a reboot, it will often work if I log out and then log back into the same account. Very strange.

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

                            Hi,

                            Four thoughts:
                            (1) Is there a function key that mutes/unmutes the speaker?
                            (2) check in alsamixer that the speaker isn’t muted (if you haven’t already done this)
                            (3) see this post, since Ubuntu and Antix are both related to Debian: https://itsfoss.com/fix-sound-ubuntu-1304-quick-tip/
                            (4) Do you have both a ucm and a (new) ucm2 directory in alsa? – that has also been associated with muted speaker (in Arch)

Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable will offer further assistance if these don’t allow you to fix things.

Thanks for the tips. Next time the sound doe snot work, I will try them.

I have been checking the mute in alsamixer. That has not been the problem.
In addition, antix has been properly detecting the sound card and driver even when the sound is not working.
I can play music in a music player and see the levels go up and down etc but hear no sound. Changing the volume levels in alsamixer makes no difference.

next time I will try — sudo alsa force-reload

Hi there, sharing my recent experience.

I did a fresh install of antiX-19.2 64-bit on a rather new HW/PC and alsa detected 2 cards:
                                – (default)
                                THE OTHER ONE

and I had to switch to default (probably a driver problem) in order to hear any sound.

                                  Hi sybok,

I wonder if that was associated with an extra ucm directory in alsa?
