The older the equipment is the more funny stuff happens. For a few of the old systems I have my suspicion is that dust and grime is affecting the electronics, especially the network and also the tendency to get warm.

In the past with desktop systems I’d take them apart and replace power supply and fan components and add or change disks and occasionally network cards.

Most laptop systems are too difficult for me with snaps, clips and tight fitting parts. I do software and I have been a systems administrator a few times in the past. Servers, at least the ones from 20-30 years ago, were really easy to work on, open up, replace or add components, etc. People who are skilled with their hands can deal with the modern snap in stuff. I replaced a HDD with a SSD several months ago in my Dell Inspiron laptop. That’s a good model and it wasn’t too bad but for a clumsy guy like me it still took at least an hour for something a good tech person could do in 5 minutes!

As far as Connman goes the one issue that sometimes surfaces is that, for reasons I don’t really know, some systems fail to properly start up the command, which is the daemon procedure for Connman and cmst.

Too bad that Xecure and skidoo are no longer available. I suspect that either of them could dig into it and figure out what is wrong, though there may be a few updates that have improved and possibly solved those matters for some types of equipment.

          Just a note,
In most places of residence or work there are multiple WLAN routers and often repeaters all on highest
available transmission power setting and interfering with each other.

Majority of issues dissapear and I can get a list of available networks when a laptop phone tablet
is taken very near to the router. Interference between networks is also an often experienced problem
when trying to get a passphrase/password accepted.

Once the initial connection is acheived WIFI will usualy then work ok.

Re. wired connection, it is way faster and more secure so I use a cable whenever possible.

Regarding UK postal strike, I think amazon has own delivery service.

I fail to understand how citizens accept moving ever further backwards towards the 4th world since thatcherites
and friends first came in to money grabbing power positions.

I left my country of birth long ago and watch events in mortified amazement.

Hi Brian, we are both ot but will answer here.

the slow wifi experience is usualy due to the 802.11b standard older wifi cards use.

Before I write a litany of gobbledygook a pretty good how and why article can be found on
            https://www.howtogeek.com/210062/how-802.11b-devices-slow-down-your-wi-fi-network-and-what-you-can-do-about-it/

you wrote: Most laptop systems are too difficult for me with snaps, clips and tight fitting parts.

I would say consumer level laptops which are designed to be quickly relegated to the dump are biggest problem.
Most pro devices are pretty easy to work on.

Agree with you on all responses.
I cannot afford the top systems so I endure with what I have and they still work well.

Lately the only systems where I ever experience issues are computers that are MORE than ten years old, have sat in a corner, probably collecting dirt and dust; they do work to some degree but they REALLY could use a good cleaning. Alas, my dexterity for getting inside the case of anything these days leaves something to be desired, so I focus mostly on my somewhat newer systems; I’ve been able to get them working by putting newer kernels and drivers on my systems, so when I use the newer systems I no longer have ANY networking issues at all.
