Hello, I am new to AntiX. My problem is my main computer is broken so I am trying to revive an old PC so I can order new parts to fix the broken one. This is a very slow PC (Pentium II), 300 MHz, with about 450 MB RAM. So excuse me if I have posted in the wrong place or missed some vital information as it is hard to get anything done with the slow speed.
So what I have done is to install AntiX 16 on the hard disk, which is working. I wanted to get a more up to date version working. So I have written AntiX-19 to a DVD to run from there, but can’t get the graphical interface to work. I think it is trying to use a video mode unsupported by the monitor. So I try the safe mode and that does not work either. Here is the output from the Xorg log file:

So, I would like to know if there is a way to force it to use 1024×768, and maybe I need to force it to use 16 fbbpp instead of 24? The monitor I have is 1920×1080 and that would be way too slow on a machine like this so I probably need to force it to use 1024×768 or even 800×600.

I forgot to say I have also tried AntiX 17 and that has a similar problem, so maybe there was a change somewhere between version 16 and 17 that has broken something for this particular hardware.

          Have your tried failsafe?
          failsafe
It is possible that the new Xorg versions shiped in antiX 17 (debian stretch) and 19 (debian buster) do not work with your computers card. It has happened before to other users in the forum.
Hopefully some of the experts in the forum can explain their experience.

            Try without vga=791

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

              penton39,

I am a huge fan of antiX and I use it alot on my older computers. But in this situation I would choose Puppy. Usually Tahrpup or Lucid works (version 6 or 5). You can get on the internet and then get what you need and go back to antiX. Puppy (and antiX) will work on DVD but if you can boot from USB it will be better. I use Plop to boot from USB.
