Hello and good day. I’m a noob with this, sorry for the ignorance. I have tried to search and find proper instruction and don’t like to guess so i am going to ask. i want to create a Live USB with persistence of Antix 19. I downloaded the full iso file and am/was going to use rufus to write it to USB. Couple questions:
1)is rufus the proper tool to write Antix19? if not which is the best one?
2)on the rufus screen it asks for partition scheme….should i use GPT or MBR? the hardware i plan on running antix 19 on is not that old (lenovo T420 and HP2000)
3)when i clicked on start it brings up screen that says ISO image hybrid to you want to write ISO image mode or DD image mode? i assumed image mode and not DD but wasnt sure?

      kind regards

      Mark

For creating an antiX liveUSB under windows, the rufus tool has worked fine when I tested.
Its default settings are fine ~~ no need to change ’em (and doing so can bring an undesirable result).
Browse to select the antiX iso file, then click “Start”. That’s it.

FYI, the “persistence” mentioned in rufus is something other than antiX persistence.
Rufus homepage describes it as experimental, toward supporting deb|ubuntu use of a liveboot persist PARTITION. (In contrast, antiX persist data is stored in a squashfs file, typically {but not necessarily} residing right within the liveboot partition.) IOW, rufus cannot setup antiX persistence in advance. It just creates a fat32 bootable pendrive. During the liveboot session, you will be provided with an opportunity to setup the antiX persistence.

Although reading this linked page in advance isn’t necessary (and doing so will probably raise questions about details you don’t need to fuss over at the outset) it highlights the extra functionality / flexibility available in antiX liveboot compared to the inflexible “persistence” mechanism provided by other linux distros

“should i use GPT or MBR?”

IMO, this detail is moot, is a matter of personal preference.
Either one can equally provide a successful result.

I have a new video series on my channel youtube.com/runwiththedolphin for antiX and MX 19 that covers making a live usb from windows and runs all the way thru using a different kernel.

They are a step-by-step kind of series.

              hi carlson v,

the gpt is for computers with uefi bios and mbr is without.
It is more for hard drive installs and booting. Haven’t noticed or
had problems with rufus on usb with default setting as noted by skidoo

From my prior experience (before I discovered antiX) with Rufus:
                – Persistence was quite unreliable with Rufus method, with Linuxes other than antiX though… Persistence became corrupted often and USB Live had to be re-created. Experienced this on different sticks, so it was not a specific stick.
                – Creating Live antiX (antiX way, via Control Center or Live USB Maker) and subsequent persistence, as described by dolphin_oracle is rock solid for me on multiple sticks and works very well in my experience. These tools are far superior from both functionality and reliability perspective. E.g. process is very easy, and you can clone USB Live system after you configure with your software and settings. You can also make USB Live encrypted by just checking box on Live USB Creator gui.
You will find Live USB antiX works as well as installed thanks to compact code.
