::Sure, go ahead.
We do need to be careful not to put too much more effort into this until anticapitalista has warmed up to the idea.

::Hello dear colleagues,
I found yesterday (November 21, 2020) this important topic created by @PPC.
This important topic addresses actions that how can we make antiX Linux more didactic. Without knowing about the existence of this topic, I created another one where I proposed some “Suggestions to make antiX Linux more didactic”, link: https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/suggestions-to-make-antix-linux-more-educational/. Both topics collaborate in the same direction, which is to make antiX more didactic.
I am impressed with the attitude and proactivity of the members of this community, I summarize my reading and what I was able to observe:
@PPC presented their suggestions on June 3, 2020 at 5:47 am, then @Xecure presented other suggestions on June 4, 2020 at 2:27 am, right after @sybok and BobC presented more suggestions, respectively at 3:40 am and 8:55 am.
Still on June 4, 2020 at 9:25 am @PPC will present its suggestions in practice, at 1:04 pm @Xecure will present its suggestions in practice.
On June 28, 2020 at 2:31 pm @Xecure presents another version in practice of your suggestions.
I was able to successfully test “antiX Welcome Screen-v0” from the link https://pastebin.com/4wRZzXuv, immediately I saw that this is what I need. I know that this is what users who are new to antiX need, it will be of great use to users who are learning computing with antiX. @PPC, with all due respect to your creation, if I may, I will call it here in Brazil “Quick Help Shortcuts”. I don’t know how to make this code become a script, but I want it for myself, I’ll translate it into Brazilian Portuguese, so I can include a shortcut icon “.desktop” with the name “Quick Help Shortcuts” or “Quick Shortcuts” “to open” antiX Welcome Screen- v0.sh “, I think it would be good to include your” Recycle Bin “or” Recycle Bin “, it will look great on the Tint2 bar.
Unfortunately I was unable to test the “Welcome screen pre-Alpha” from the link: https://pastebin.com/8LZ9Lswu. But luckily I was able to test “antix-welcome-screen.zip” successfully, as the script is ready to use. @Xecure, with all due respect to your creation, if I may, I will call it here in Brazil “AntX Help”. As the script is practically ready, I will translate it into Brazilian Portuguese, so I can include a shortcut icon “.desktop” with the name “antX Help” to open “antiX Welcome Screen- v0.sh”.
The two suggestions from @PPC and @Xecure I will use for the next installations that I make of antiX, along with the Applications Menu all translated and commented on the Personal Menu.
In my opinion, antiX could and can become an operating system that is increasingly easy to understand and use by beginners in the operating system of any country and in any language. But for that it is necessary to make it more and more didactic.
I am not bilingual, but with the help of translations from online translators and with what I can understand, I strive to make each text very well explained and with detailed information.
The text I am going to write below, I know is not related to the subject of this topic, but it is inherent.
I would like you to know that Mr. Claudio, creator DuZeru Linux, through the Telegram group (DuZeru IT) and on the DuZeru website , on 10/29/2020 he made the sad announcement of the end of this Brazilian Linux distribution, due to the reasons mentioned by him in quotes:
“the project ended up failing to attract a group of developers interested in actively participating in the development.”
“In short, billing and demand has become greater than delivery capacity.”
Here, in this forum and in antiX the reality is different, people are participative and are always wanting the best for antiX. We have to encourage and support these actions. I support these actions and whenever I can, I collaborate with suggestions and, if possible, with volunteer work with translations. I don’t want antiX to have the same purpose as DuZeru Linux.

::I will probably redo the yad welcome screen entirely. I tested with skidoo’s ported version of yad and this script still uses 100 MBs of RAM.
Tabs are the biggest problem for yad scripts. Each tabs load as single separate yad process, and that leads to the accumulation of yad processes. If one of them fails or doesn’t stop when the main window is closed, it leads to a lock in yad, and many errors and glitches can happen. The only solution is to reboot.I like what you did there, BobC. Separating things in small “bites” is better than long explanations. I will check how they do it in PopOS and other distros to get some ideas, but probably a similar small bites of information (but less amount of tabs) is more desirable for new users. I would also like people to reach the Control Centre as soon as possible, as it has the solution to most of the user’s problems. Some of the problems we see on the forum, like the users that install systemd by mistake, or not getting the antiX package updates, could have been solved if they used the Repo manager easily found in the Control Centre.
PPC, I am modifying the antix-wifi-switch script so it can work “silently” (giving the –silent option), so that connman can launch without any user input (your suggested script only works if cmst is installed and nobody has tried configuring ceni, while antix-wifi-switch will work for both connman-ui and cmst). I will also aproach things in a less destructive way (instead of removing lines from /etc/network/interfaces, I will comment them out, so that they are recoverable).
If I finish in time, I will try presenting next week an alternative to gtkdialog, as gtk2 is on the path of extinction. Hopefully we could use that tool for a resource friendly redo of some antiX apps.

::I think that some form of automatic detection is best for novice support.
I like the idea of offering one or more scripted alternatives (several of them if they are not too large; they can either be stored in a forum archive, a free software repository or in our official repo.

::So…. Which path should we take? Select an option or Yes/No on each question, please? All are welcome to reply/comment…
1. Minimum screen size?
a. 640×480
b. 800×600 should be sufficient even for 10-20 years old hardwareBefore:
2. Automatic HiDPI display detection and pop up dialog box with 20 second timeout, and if no manual override, automatically change to readable settings,This sounds appealing to the novice user.
3. Automatic internet connection detection and pop up connman connection if not connected
This could work too.
4. Quick Setup:
a. PPC format – one panel, simple
A good choice for the novice user.b. Xecure format – Multitab with many hints, tips and links
c. BobC format, X – Main tab handles most common issues, Xecure detailed solutions on additional tabs
d. BobC format, P – Only Main tab
e. none of the above – provide a better answer, please
Any of the four options could be made available for alternatives, but I prefer the automatic approach for the sake of new users. If we keep the other alternatives in packages or a free download site, that would be great for flexibility and choice.PS: I still need a way to add that checkbox to avoid seeing the Quick setup screen again.

::PPC, I like the improvement to the WiFi detection script. Can we run it from ~/desktop-session/startup? That way it would run for all of the window managers.
Xecure, We should see if your screen detection script we were playing with will work from ~/desktop-session/startup, too. I’ll hook up an additional 4K screen (so, one 15 inch and one 42 inch) and see if I can get one or two lower resolution USB screens running at the same time, for a total of 4. If not, I have other options.
I will write BitJam and see if he knows a way we could save values by machine when booted live for the Don’t show me again. I don’t think trying to save the display setup is as necessary, but maybe someone that runs from flashdrive all the time without persistence with a 4K display can provide feedback.
Could each of you post a pic of what you would want it to look like? I hesitate to post pics of yours in case your ideas have changed over time.
With an increased screen size to 800×600 I can add 4 or 6 more options to mine if left tabbed. I worry about the 100 mb memory required for the tabbed setup.
My single screen option would look like the tabbed one stolen from Xecure without the other tabs, and with the Live user id’s/passwords on a 2nd heading line. Removing the tabs would make room for more options (probably too many), and I would need to put the things I was depending on his back tabs for like App-Select, FAQ, Videos, Wiki, and this Forum on the single screen. Since I’m just copying the text and icons from the menu, its easy to add buttons to mine if I knew what other programs people would need to be there. If we are going that route Xecure’s antiX setup/install tips maybe should be an option on it.
I prefer the more polished “looks” of the logo and text/icons that match the menus, myself.

::PS: I still need a way to add that checkbox to avoid seeing the Quick setup screen again.
Dave anwsered a page ago in this topic, pointing to:
~/.desktop-session/desktop-session.conf
STARTUP_DIALOG_CMD=/path/to/welcomescript
The conf file would ship with a default stating STARTUP_DIALOG=”true”
and upon capturing checkbox has been clicked, your script would
sed ‘s/STARTUP_DIALOG=”true”/STARTUP_DIALOG=”false”/g’ ~/.desktop-session/desktop-session.conf
(the ‘g’ modifier is just for good measure; only one occurrence should be present)The above does not address suppressing the dialog during non-persistent liveboot session.
I’ll wrassle that detail in a followup post.November 23, 2020 at 2:15 am #45577Member

So…. Which path should we take? Select an option or Yes/No on each question, please? All are welcome to reply/comment…Regardless of which version is approved and applied in the next antiX ISO’s, we have to think about who this welcome screen is for:
1-It is not for those who already know and master antiX.
2-It is for those who do not know and do not master antiX.
3-We have to “conquer” the newly arrived user in the first 5 minutes. Because it is in the first 5 minutes that the user’s anxiety is high. If the most important information is on this welcome screen and most questions are answered before the questions are even asked, the “5 minutes of anxiety” will be transformed into pleasure or fulfillment.
4-After the “5 minutes of anxiety”, now comes the natural curiosity, what’s more here (in antiX)?
I’m looking at the three versions right now, respectively for the most recent version of @PPC, @Xecure and @BobC:
The @PPC version included small icons, so the translated texts will certainly fit in these spaces, the version I’m viewing is in Portuguese, if the Portuguese texts fit, then certainly the texts from other languages will fit. You still have comments on each of the texts when the mouse pointer stops over the text.
The @Xecure version will be perfect for when the “5 minutes of anxiety” are over and the user wants to know more. This version can be used as Help and within this script include a link to open the Help that already exists in antiX (/usr/share/antix/FAQ/index.html). The next mission of this community will be to translate the HTML Help that is already available in antiX in English into other languages.
I make a note here, as I have not yet managed to translate the HTML Help files for antiX end users here in Brazil, I have included in the “Favorites” option of the Chromium and / or Google Chrome internet browsers the link to HTML help, if the user has access to the internet, they will be able to read with the translation offered by the internet browser. The translations are not fully understandable, but this is what I was able to do to help them have access to the content available in antiX, but which is unfortunately only available in English.
The version of @BobC, separated a little more and increased the number of menus. I just hope that the texts prepared by @Xecure have not been lost. At this moment I am unable to read the texts, as I have not yet translated them with the help of the online translator. However, I can recognize the titles and some words due to the revision / correction that I have been doing on the transifex website. My suggestions, at this moment, for this version of @BobC is that you need to decrease the size of the icons to have more space for the texts, the words in other languages, like the Portuguese language will occupy much more space. And include within this script a link to open the Help that already exists in antiX (/usr/share/antix/FAQ/index.html).
Both versions of @Xecure and @BobC need to have the Wiki Fan Page link (https://antixlinuxfan.miraheze.org/wiki/Main_Page).
The hardest work has ever been done by @PPC, @Xecure and @BobC, it is now to evaluate where to use and how to use each material.
I already know that all these scripts can and should be used, I will use them here in Brazil, after translating each sentence. There’s no way not to use it. Each of these scripts I will include in the next installations that I make of antiX, the menus for these scripts will be protected in the Personal Menu from system updates that change the menus. But I think of other users, if these scripts are not included by default in antiX, how much they will be missing out on useful information.
I am grateful for being able to collaborate with suggestions, since I cannot collaborate with the codes.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and volunteer work.
United for an ever better anitX!

So…. Which path should we take? Select an option or Yes/No on each question, please?

::marcelocripe, My intent was to help a new person that doesn’t know antiX, but probably knows some other operating system from a user perspective, and maybe has tried or knows other Linux distros. Those are the ones that get lost and frustrated trying to just get it working for them.
I tried making a single page with no tabs, combining all the items from PPC and Xecure, and my own. Yes, I added the Wiki, replacing Facebook. No offense, but that site should be used to bring people looking at antiX here, because it’s not easy to support things there, IMO. The bad news is that I ended up with 31 buttons, LOL. That would really scare a newbie. How would they have any idea which buttons to hit or not hit?

::Maybe what is needed is an initial screen with just what’s needed to get rolling, and a button at the bottom to take me to a antiX Help links page, and another to a Customizing antiX page?
